The St. Matthews Library will be CLOSED beginning August 26 and stay closed for the remainder of its renovation. For the convenience of Library patrons, starting August 26 the Middletown Library will begin offering Sunday hours (1-5 p.m.) until St. Matthews reopens in spring 2019.

Weekly St. Matthews storytimes will continue to be held at the St. Matthews Community Center (310 Ten Pin Lane) throughout the closure. Please check the online calendar for the current schedule.

And patrons are encouraged to visit the Crescent Hill, Westport, or Middletown branches—or any of the Library's area locations—during construction.

Follow the eNews for more information as the work continues and we prepare for a grand reopening of the St. Matthews Library in the spring.

Women’s Equality Day – August 25

LWV

The League of Women Voters of Louisville, along with their sponsoring partners, the Frazier History Museum and the Louisville Metro Office for Women, is sponsoring a celebration of Women’s Equality Day by presenting a program entitled Speaking Out. Educating Women. This event will honor the struggle and accomplishments of women educators in our community. Invited to participate are three women university presidents: Dr. Tori Murden-McClure of Spalding University, Dr Susan Donovan of Bellarmine University, and the new President of the University of Louisville, Dr. Neeli Bendapudi.

The event will also honor the six Louisville Metro Councilwomen who will be leaving the Council this year.

This gathering will be held at the Frazier History Museum on Saturday morning, August 25, from 10:30 to 12:30, and is free and open to the public. Women’s Equality Day is designed to educate about the history of women winning the right to vote, to understand the current status of voting rights and to develop a plan to expand voting rights.

MSD Tunnel Expansion Meeting

MSD 1

MSD will hold an informational meeting for stakeholders in the area of I-64 and Grinstead Drive/Lexington Road to review the change from a basin to a tunnel for that site. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 28, 6:30 PM, at Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana Building, 2115 Lexington Road.

MSD decided last month to expand the project to build a massive tunnel 18 stories underground to help keep millions of gallons of sewage out of the Ohio River and Beargrass Creek to capture even more wastewater and stormwater overflow – and eliminate the need for the planned storage basin project.

MSD2

The Waterway Protection Tunnel was initially planned to be 2.5 miles long, beginning at 12th and Rowan streets just west of downtown, and stretching east to East Main Street near the Home of the Innocents. On July 23, the MSD Board of Directors approved a change order to the project, which will extend the tunnel to about four miles total, continuing the route southeast to near Lexington Road and Grinstead Drive. The total storage capacity of the underground tunnel will increase from 37 million gallons to 55 million gallons.

The extension of the tunnel will replace the planned storage basin project at the site of the former Jim Porter’s Goodtime Emporium near Lexington and Grinstead. Additionally, when the underground tunnel project is complete, the above-ground site at that location will gain a new public green space to serve as a trailhead for the Beargrass Creek Trail, complete with parking, paths, trails, a rain garden and a wetland preservation area. We are working to have the Greenway reopened as soon as the construction schedule allows.

“Extending the tunnel creates the opportunity to meet our goal of safer, cleaner waterways and environment for our community with less above-ground construction impacts,” said MSD Executive Director Tony Parrott.

Sustainability Story: Waterfront Botanical Gardens

Waterfront Botanical

Things are moving along at the Waterfront Botanical Gardens at the corner of Frankfort Avenue and River Road. Construction on the site has been underway since November of 2017. Building construction for the Graeser Family Education Center has just begun, with a scheduled opening in Fall 2019. The entire 23-acre project is estimated at $60 Million.

Botanica, Inc. has recently announced a new major contribution and a way for you to have new contributions to the project matched. The $500,000 match grant from George Duthie is in memory of his late wife, Mary Lee Duthie. The match grant is open for the remainder of 2018, and will close on Dec. 31. The 1:1 match includes new donations and (signed) pledges to the non-profit organization. The Duthie family stated that their hope is that their father’s commitment will incentivize new donors to get “off the fence” and step up to support the project. This grant and the matching funding will help efforts to raise the additional $7 Million needed to complete the entirety of Phase 1, which includes the Graeser Family Education Center, the Mary Lee Duthie Gardens (pollinator, Kentucky native, edible and display gardens), the Beargrass Creek Overlook, Tree Allée, greenhouse, workshop, and classroom.

Clearing the Air – ACPD Workshop Series

Clearing the Air

You can learn more about Louisville’s air pollution issues, and the community’s response to them at "Clearing The Air," a workshop series hosted by the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District.

The goal of "Clearing The Air" is to give citizens an inside look at the APCD, everything from the science of air pollution to the laws and regulations that protect our health from harmful air.

Although the smoggy, polluted skies of the 1970s are a distant memory, Louisville still must work to meet federal air quality standards. As a major industrial and logistics hub located in a heavily populated river valley, Louisville is challenged to control air pollution while maintaining a robust local economy.

"Clearing The Air" began in July. There are four free workshops remaining in the series, which is held at the Louisville Free Public Library, 301 York St.

  • Aug. 27: The APCD Regulatory Process
  • Sept. 10: How We Monitor Air Quality
  • Sept. 22: Technical Workshop *
  • Sept. 24: The STAR Program/Environmental Justice

The workshops will be 5:30-7 p.m., and they are free and open to the public.

(*Exception: The Technical Workshop will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m.)
