Contractor crews have
begun installing a micro-trench in the pavement north of I-264 (Watterson
Expressway) as part of The New Dixie Highway Project.
This 1.5 inch wide trench will hold conduit for fiber optic cables that will
allow the new TARC bus rapid transit buses to communicate with traffic signals,
helping move buses through busy intersections more efficiently. (The
Rapid will be the first bus rapid transit line in the Louisville Metro area.)
This micro-trench will be installed along a four-mile section of Dixie Highway
between Nobel Place and West Broadway. Crews will saw cut the pavement, install
the conduit and then seal the roadway surface.
Work started this week at Nobel Place, with crews gradually working north to
West Broadway. As the work zone moves north, a section of the right lane of
northbound Dixie Highway in the area where work is being done will be closed
daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. This process will take several weeks to
complete.
The new fiber-linked traffic signals, and their connectivity to TARC buses,
will improve the efficiency of one of Louisville’s most traveled roadways.
The New Dixie Highway Project is designed to improve safety and traffic
efficiency along one of the city’s busiest corridors, and will include new
fiber-linked traffic signals, new concrete and landscaped medians, and TARC’s
first bus rapid transit line.
