|
An historical marker dedication honoring Saddler Sergeant Otto Voit will be Tuesday, August 7 at 10:30 a.m. at 1808 S. Preston Street. Officially known as Kentucky Historical Highway Marker #2554, the marker commemorates Voit's bravery: HEROISM AT LITTLE BIG HORN Co. H, Seventh U.S. Cavalry, was taking heavy losses at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Intense fire from nearly all sides led to more wounded and a critical need for water. Otto Voit and three other soldiers stood exposed on a hilltop for 20 minutes, taking fire and covering for others who crossed open ground for water. Military Order of the Purple Heart, Dept. of Kentucky SADDLER SERGEANT OTTO VOIT Saddler Voit received the Medal of Honor Oct. 5, 1878 for valor at Little Big Horn. He served for another two decades and rose to the rank of Saddler Sergeant. After his discharge, Voit settled in Louisville. A German immigrant, Voit became a U.S. citizen in 1902. He died in 1906 and rests in St. Stephen’s Cemetery. Chapter 146, Military Order of the Purple Heart |

Louisville Metro news
MSD closes portion of East Liberty Street and Baxter Avenue due to cave-in
Thursday, a hole opened up in the pavement along East Liberty at Baxter Avenue. The five by eight-foot hole revealed a 15 by 30-foot wide, 10 to 12-foot deep void under the pavement.
MSD crews have reduced East Liberty Street to one lane, and the intersection with Baxter Avenue is partially closed.
The hole is near a cave-in site from June that was the result of a break in a 30-inch, 1871-era brick sewer line. There is no estimate on the repair timeline, and no interruption to sewer service in the area.
Louisville Metro Government launches new web tool to explore Opportunity Zones
In April 2018, the U.S. Department of the Treasury certified 144 Opportunity Zones in 84 Kentucky counties as recommended by Governor Matt Bevin under a new community development program, the Investing in Opportunity Act, part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. In Louisville, 19 census tracts are designated as Opportunity Zones.
The Opportunity Zones program is designed to spur economic development and create jobs by encouraging long-term investment in economically-distressed urban and rural areas. The program provides a tax incentive for investors to re-invest their unrealized capital gains into Opportunity Funds that are dedicated to investing in Opportunity Zones.
“The Opportunity Zones program establishes the framework for investors to inject investment into projects in our city that will have a significant social impact. Projects like the redevelopment of the Louisville Gardens, the Track on Ali at Heritage West, and projects from Butchertown to downtown to west Louisville are great examples of developments that could benefit from this program,” said Mayor Greg Fischer. “We look forward to continuing our work with our partners at the state and with local investors to strategically grow our city.”
To assist business owners and investors with identifying Opportunity Zones, the city created an interactive map to show exact addresses and boundaries of Louisville’s designated Opportunity Zones.

Intersection of Baxter and Lexington to be closed through August for MSD work
MSD sewer line work has closed the intersection of Lexington Road and Baxter Avenue. It will reopen no later than August 7. While MSD is working in the area, all area businesses are open with access to parking. Local detours are marked. Commuter traffic, between the Highlands and downtown, will detour to Broadway and East Chestnut Street. The construction is to install a new sanitary sewer line that will connect to the Waterway Protection Tunnel. The new line will capture nine sewer overflow points that currently discharge to Beargrass Creek. The Waterway Protection Tunnel will prevent millions of gallons of sewage from entering Beargrass Creek and the Ohio River. During excessive rainfall, the tunnel will store sewage and storm water for treatment until system capacity is available.

August 6 - Next free summer movie at the Iroquois Amphitheater
The next free summer movie at Iroquois Amphitheater is Freedom Writers on August 6. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the movie begins at 8:30 p.m.
August 13 - LMPD impound lot community meeting
The next community
meeting to discuss the LMPD impound lot will be held on August 13 from 6 to 7 p.m.
at the California Community Center at 1600 St. Catherine Street.
What is the current status of the impound lot relocation? Earlier this year, Louisville Metro Government (LMG) announced plans to seek a new location for the Impound Lot, citing space issues, and the impound lot’s negative impact on nearby Beargrass Creek and the Beargrass Creek Greenway Trail. The site, a former landfill, is also located in a floodplain and is partially impacted by a high-tension power line. At that time, the city issued a public Request for Information (RFI), seeking properties that fit the city’s search criteria for size, location, and other physical and operational requirements. The city received seven responses to that RFI but none met the search criteria.
What will be discussed at this meeting? LMG received a suggestion to relocate vehicles held at the impound lot as evidence in a criminal or civil lawsuit or investigation to a separate, secured location. This would decrease the number of vehicles at the impound lot by approximately 350, allowing towing operations to resume as space was made available through vehicle relocation. A warehouse located on 9th Street has been identified as a proposed alternative storage location for impounded vehicles being held as evidence. The warehouse will provide an indoor, secure location for these vehicles, and is located in an industrial area of the California neighborhood. Impacts to the neighborhood are expected to be minimal because access to the warehouse will not be through a residential area, the warehouse is surrounded by commercial and industrial uses, the vehicles will be secured indoors and the relatively small number of trips associated with adding or removing vehicles from the space will not significantly affect traffic on 9th Street.
Questions? Please contact Allison Smith at allison.smith@louisvilleky.gov or 574-1569.

Discounted Recycle Carts still available for $28 for District 10 residents - in 95-gallon or 64 gallon size
Kentucky's Republican-dominated legislature voted to impose sales taxes on services on April 2. Now, services such as landscaping, janitorial services, grooming for small pets, fitness centers, car repair and items sold by governments are subject to a six percent tax.
This affects our discounted recycle cart program. The normal purchase price for the carts is $50, plus six percent sales tax, for a total cost of $53.
Metro Council District 10 will continue to provide $25 towards the purchase of this cart. Constituents will be asked to pay the difference of $28 going forward.
The discounted recycle cart program has been re-instituted by Councilman Mulvihill and now offers two sizes: the 95-gallon carts and smaller 64 gallon carts.
The photos at left show the sizes (64 gallon on the left). |
The carts normally cost $50, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $28. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form.
The reduced cost recycle
carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are
depleted. This offer is available to urban service district residents. |
