A big crowd attended groundbreaking for the makeover planned to straighten out 18th Street as it crosses West Broadway to Dixie Highway.
The Russell and California Neighborhoods
have worked a long time with community leaders, Developers and advocates to
make this long-overdue project a reality. Thank you! The “Barbara” hard
hat showed up at another groundbreaking in Metro District 4 at corner of 18th
Street and West Broadway.

Robert Hayden, owner of 18th Street Deli
& Grocery on West Broadway at 18th Street. We must support our
local businesses so they can support the community and create wealth for their
families in West Louisville. The crowd lined up
to get some of the best deli sandwiches and BBQ in the region at the new 18th
Street Deli & Grocery. Yes - GROCERY. Stop by and meet Robert Hayden the
owner. Make sure to get lunch and some groceries.

College Street
between Brook and 1st Streets is looking much better these days. The homeless
folks are working hard to keep it clean and they are taking pride in their
City. Looks like a “clean
sweep” on College Street thanks to a few donated brooms, hard working
homeless folks, and a few helpers from Metro Corrections. Solid Waste
Management helps by emptying the trash cans. Now it’s our turn
to do our part. Please think twice before you drop off things you think
homeless folks need or want. Many times it just ends up on the ground or in the
trash because of the containers you bring it in. Let’s all work together to
keep our City clean.

 Celebrating the groundbreaking for
Col. Charles Young
Memorial located at corner of 18th Street and Muhammad Ali Blvd. at the Kentucky
Center for African American Heritage. Thank you Shedrick Jones for your many
years of service remembering our veterans. Col. Charles Young was the third African- American graduate of the United States Military Academy, the first black US National Park superintendent, first black military attache and the first black man to achieve the rank of colonel in the United States Army, and highest-ranking black officer in the regular army until his death in 1922.
The Charles Young Veterans Memorial is the first project of the Freedom Flag Initiative. This initiative will work through Public-Private Partnerships to install American Flags throughout communities and states across the nation, and build memorials to honor our nation’s veterans.
This initiative was created by the Region VI Commanders of the National Association for Black Veterans as an opportunity to unify people and communities by providing beautiful spaces to reflect on a symbol that can unify us all - Old Glory.

Lots of fun at Waterfront Park!
Take a spin on the new Scream Machine!
|

This community sent a very strong message to Family Dollar Stores, we
already have more than enough places to sell alcohol in Metro Louisville! Thank you to all who came out and showed support!
|
We had an absolute blast at the Western Library Block Party! There was live music from Myron Hestor and the Louisville Connection, a Bubble Car, bouncy house, and loads of Summer Reading games for the kids, including a hula hoop contest! There were also free health screenings such as: blood pressure checks, cancer and stroke prevention programs, mammogram checks, and smoking cessation programs. Save the date for next year, you'll be glad you did!

The Shelby Park neighborhood’s fifth historical
marker was dedicated to celebrate the National Historic Registered Place,
the St. Vincent de Paul campus and the Louisville architect, D. X. Murphy.
Through the gracious and loving support of our
neighbors, Sojourn Community Church and Studio Kremer Architects, their ongoing
efforts to recognize the Shelby Park neighborhood’s importance to Louisville
continues.
How is D.X. Murphy connected to Luckett and Farley? Luckett & Farley was founded in 1853 and is one of the oldest continuing architectural firms in the country. The firm was founded in Louisville, Kentucky under the names Isaiah Rogers and Henry Whitestone. Whitestone’s practice was succeeded by D. X. Murphy in 1880 and D. X. Murphy & Brother in 1890. Whitestone and the Murphy firm were responsible for some of Louisville’s historic landmarks. Included were the Louisville City Hall Clock Tower, Churchill Downs, the original Jefferson County Jail and the L & N Railroad Office Building.

Earlier this year, Louisville Metro
Government (LMG) announced plans to seek a new location for the Impound Lot,
citing space issues, and the impound lot’s negative impact on nearby
Beargrass Creek and the Beargrass Creek Greenway Trail. The site, a former
landfill, is also located in a floodplain and is partially impacted by a
high-tension power line. At that time, the city issued a public Request for
Information (RFI), seeking properties that fit the city’s search criteria for
size, location and other physical and operational requirements. The city
received seven responses to that RFI but none met the search criteria.
LMG is hosting another meeting on Monday, August 13 from 6:00 –
7:00 p.m. at the California Community Center, 1600 St. Catherine Street.
What will be discussed at this meeting? LMG received a
suggestion to relocate vehicles held at the impound lot as evidence in a
criminal or civil lawsuit or investigation to a separate, secured location.
This would decrease the number of vehicles at the impound lot by
approximately 350, allowing towing operations to resume as space was made
available through vehicle relocation. A warehouse located on 9th Street has
been identified as a proposed alternative storage location for impounded
vehicles being held as evidence. The warehouse will provide an indoor, secure
location for these vehicles, and is located in an industrial area of the
California neighborhood. Impacts to the neighborhood are expected to be
minimal because access to the warehouse will not be through a residential
area, the warehouse is surrounded by commercial and industrial uses, the
vehicles will be secured indoors and the relatively small number of trips
associated with adding or removing vehicles from the space will not
significantly affect traffic on 9th Street.

 Get damaged garbage carts replaced.
It's free once a year if damage is shown.
A damaged garbage or recycling cart is bad for multiple
reasons. The damaged cart won't hold the garbage or recycling as well as it
should which can lead to litter and attract animals. Broken handles or wheels
also make it difficult and potentially dangerous for our Solid Waste Tippers to
lift and empty carts.
So let us know
if you have a damaged cart. Call MetroCall at 311 or 574-5000. Provide them with
your name, address and daytime phone number along with the serial number from
the cart and a description of the damage. Or complete this online form.

This week
Metro Public Works is highlighting sections of the Louisville Metro Code of
Ordinances that often come as a surprise to residents. They basically require
property owners and residents to keep the area around homes clean and free of
obstructions, from the center line of the street to the center line of any
adjacent alley.
§ 156.051 RESPONSIBILITY OF PERSONS.
(B) Sanitary condition.
(1)
Cleanliness. Every occupant of a structure or part thereof shall keep
that part of the structure or premises which that occupant occupies,
controls, or uses in a clean, safe and sanitary condition, and in the case of
a single-family structure, the owner shall keep the premises free of all
weeds...to the center line of such street, easement or alley as are
adjacent to or abut the premises.
That includes that patch of grass between the sidewalk and the
curb known as a verge.
What is a Right-of-Way Obstruction?
Any structure that may prevent or impede the full and free use
by the public of the entire sidewalk, street, alley, or public way (right of
way). Some examples of right-of-way obstructions: basketball
goals left on the curb line, concrete pyramids, piles of brush, items being
sold, political/advertising signs, trees, shrubs, retaining walls, cars
parked in the right of way, and any obstructions to cross visibility.
