Enjoy communing with your fellow Sierrans at our annual potluck picnic.  Greater Louisville Sierra Club will provide the meat from Momma's Mustard Pickles & BBQ.  We ask you to bring some food of your choosing to share. As an after-dinner treat, Shannon Connelly and Bree Pearsall will discuss the state of local food systems in Kentucky.  Shannon works for Metro Louisville’s Farm-to-Table initiative.  She will talk about her day-to-day work including recent wins, barriers to local food marketing and distribution, and working with farmers to find innovative ways to attract new consumers.  Bree will talk about the life of an organic farmer and how she and her husband were able to turn their aspirations into a vibrant family business.  Both speakers will address how community partners have helped build a food system that is strong and growing.  Learn about the challenges and opportunities for family farms in Kentucky and about ways to support them.

Shannon Connelly has worked for ten years in local food facilitation and healthy food access.  With professional roots in St. Louis and San Francisco, she joined Louisville Farm to Table late last year.  She works to increase the capacity of the local food system by serving as a matchmaker between local family farmers and food buyers and by problem-solving to make “buying local” the easy choice.

Bree Pearsall and her husband have been first-generation organic farmers for fourteen years.  Their Rootbound Farm is situated on 150 acres in Oldham County where they have eighteen acres in vegetable production and 100 acres dedicated to Katahdin sheep.  They grow fifty different kinds of vegetables and feed 500 families per week through their community-supported agriculture (CSA) sales and pop-up market Fresh Stops.

Comment on LG&E/KU Smart Meter Case

The Public Service Commission has agreed to take public comments on the LG&E/KU request to deploy an advanced metering system, case number 2018-00005.  Local fair housing and social justice advocates are concerned that the costs passed along to rate-payers over the life of this program will be more than the savings claimed by the company.  Cost estimates range from $350 million to $712 million. Meet-and-greet with samples from several beer cheese recipes and refreshments starts at 4:30 and talk begins at 5:00pm.

Once on This Island

The Youth Repertory Theater Troupe of Louisville are taking you to the islands in their upcoming production of "Once on this Island." Fine Arts Director, Erica Bledsaw says that another musical was considered before this one: "We were unable to go with our plans to produce Memphis the musical because we did not get the diversity required to make it happen, however the show Once on this Island is what we're going with this year and it is going to be so much better than Memphis!" Bledsaw adds that one rising star to watch and making her debut in this year's show is, Ammarriah Russell who will play the role of Timoune. Russell is a trained opera singer. 2018 NITEFLIX, a free outdoor movie series, is coming to the Edison Center parking lot this summer.  The center is at 701 W. Ormsby next to North Lime Coffee & Donuts at Seventh and Ormsby. On Saturday, July 21 showcases Aliens.  Doors open at 7:30. President David James announces the first Art in City Hall Exhibition for Historic City Hall on Jefferson Street

The search is on for local artists

Louisville – Completed in 1873, historic City Hall is currently home to the 26 members of the Louisville Metro Council. Very soon, it will showcase the works of local artists as President David James (D-6) announces the first Art in City Hall exhibition slated for this summer.

          “Over the years, we have come to appreciate the beauty of City Hall architecturally as we have restored its natural look and design as to preserve its history,” says James. “Now, I want to invite local artists to share their works in the public areas of this fine building to enhance the creative spirit and talent that we have in this city.”

          Art in City Hall is a joint effort between the Metro Council and Metro Government. The artworks selected will be exhibited in the entrance lobby, hallways and public spaces within City Hall.  Primary audiences will include the Metro Council representatives, staff, visiting constituents, and members of the public attending Metro Council and committee meetings.

          “City Hall is where our community gathers to advocate, debate, and make change. We are excited to work with President James and Metro Council to bring artists, and their contributions to our community dialogue, to this important public space,” said Metro Public Art Administrator Sarah Lindgren.

          Art in City Hall is an opportunity open to all artists of any race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality or disability working in Louisville/Jefferson County.

Artists should submit original, two-dimensional artwork meeting the specifications outlined below. There is no entry fee. Each artist selected to exhibit their work will receive a $500 honorarium. The Art in City Hall exhibition will take place over August 2018 through August 2019.

SPECIFICATIONS

·        All artwork must be original and two-dimensional.

·        Outside dimensions of work (including frame) must not be smaller than 16 x 16 in. and must not exceed 60 x 60 in.

·        All artwork must be framed, stretched or mounted to durable material, and ready for hanging with D-ring hangers, wire, or equivalent.

·        Artists are responsible for transportation and delivery of selected artworks to City Hall by designated date and for pick up by a designated date at the conclusion of the exhibition.

Artwork will be selected by a committee consisting of Commission on Public Art, Metro Council, and Metro staff members. Up to five artists will be selected for the exhibition. Each artist will be asked to exhibit 1–5 artworks.

Beshear Issues Alert for Military Consumer Month

Veterans, military families be wary of top three veteran-specific scams FRANKFORT, Ky. (July 6, 2018) – July is Military Consumer Month, and Attorney General Andy Beshear is warning veterans and military families to be on the lookout for the most common veteran-specific scams. Beshear said the alert is part of his office’s “Mission Veterans Protected” (MVP) program aimed at helping Kentucky’s veteran community combat the findings in an AARP study where veterans are twice as likely to fall victim to fraud when compared to nonveterans. “My office is currently working to help two widows of veterans who lost more than $43,000 to scammers pretending to be active duty soldiers,” Beshear said. “It is a disgrace that con artists target military families, and we are working to prevent these crimes by making sure Kentucky veterans, active duty service members, reservists and their families can identify the most common veteran-specific scams.” Beshear said three of the top veteran-specific scams identified in the AARP study are:   1.      Charitable Donations Scams – When con artists lie and claim to be a veteran or service member who is collecting charitable donations to support other veterans and veteran causes. Tip: Verify all charities before making a donation and never send cash, wire money, pay in gift cards or use other untraceable methods of payment. Donors who are not familiar with a charitable organization can verify official organizations on org. Visit the Attorney General’s website to find additional charity research tools. 2.      Military Discounts and Free Programs Scams – Scammers target veterans by claiming to offer military discounts or access to free goods and services through special government programs. Tip: If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Many legitimate organizations do offer genuine discounts for veterans, but first research offers online and with the Better Business Bureau. Never provide sensitive personal or financial information in exchange for a “discount.” 3.      U.S. Soldier Impersonation Scams – A variety of veteran scams appear as someone who pretends to be a U.S. soldier and claims he or she needs a friend, financial help or to sell goods and services for a cheap price. The scammers go as far as opening up fake social media accounts and use real names and photos of U.S. soldiers that they have stolen from real U.S. soldiers. Tip: If anyone you do not know contacts you and quickly asks for money it is most likely a scam. The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command recommends soldiers and their families actively search social media sites to see if a scammer is using their name and information. Soldiers may conduct a Google image search of their social media profile pictures. If a soldier or a family member is being impersonated the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command offers a flyer that provides resources to help you report and stop fake profiles. Beshear said for additional information and a complete list of the top 10 veteran-specific scams visit the MVP website, which also provides a list of upcoming community events and a printable awareness poster. The MVP program has more than 30 community partners, including AARP Kentucky, who work to serve the nearly 300,000 veterans who call Kentucky home. “Mission Veterans Protected” is the latest step Beshear has taken to both stop con artists and help protect veterans. Most recently, Beshear announced his office assisted in shuttering the doors of a charity, VietNow National Headquarters Inc., that misled thousands of donors by claiming contributions supported local veterans. Beshear recommends all Kentuckians stay ahead of scammers by signing up for his office’s Scam Alerts. Cultural Pass for Area Students

For Louisville residents who are attending the Congress, the city offers an unprecedented cultural opportunity for kids. Each summer, forty-three arts and cultural institutions team up to provide free admission to area students—from first graders to university students and their parents—through Louisville’s Cultural Pass program. There are a variety of experiences available—from the big venues, such as the Speed Art Museum, Muhammad Ali Center, Kentucky Derby Museum, Frazier History Museum, Kentucky Science Center, Falls of the Ohio State Park and Louisville Zoo, to more intimate learning experiences at, say, the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum and the Museum of the American Printing House for the Blind. Community invited to learn about air pollution at "Clearing The Air" workshop series

Louisville's ongoing effort to reduce air pollution is the focus of a new workshop series hosted by the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District. The goal of "Clearing The Air" is to give the public an inside look at the APCD, everything from the science of air pollution to the laws and regulations that protect our health from harmful air. "We're excited to share the District’s work in a setting that will encourage dialogue and learning," said Michelle King, APCD Director of Program Planning. "We can learn more about our community's questions and concerns, while providing an opportunity for person-to-person conversations with individuals who want to know more about Louisville’s air quality." Although the smoggy, polluted skies of the 1970s are a distant memory, Louisville still must work to meet federal air quality standards. As a major industrial and logistics hub located in a heavily populated river valley, Louisville is challenged to control air pollution while maintaining a robust local economy. "Air quality is a very important topic in Louisville that affects every community," said APCD Environmental Coordinator Torend Collins, who is overseeing the workshop series. "These workshops are a great way to learn more about APCD and how we, as members of the community, can continue to improve Louisville's air." The APCD is delegated by the federal Clean Air Act to issue and enforce industrial and commercial air pollution permits in Louisville. First Division

Major Eric Johnson Johnson began his career in 1999 with the Louisville Division of Police (LPD). Prior to merger, he served as a patrol officer and a flex detective in the former Third and Fifth Districts. After merger, Johnson served in the Fourth Division and Metro Narcotics. In August 2005, Johnson was promoted to Sergeant and served in the First Division as a patrol and Division Detective supervisor.  In April 2013, Johnson was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Second Division.  In October 2013, Johnson became the Strategic Planning Lieutenant, where he oversaw the department's strategic plan, the Mayor’s LouieStat program, the department’s response to the President's Report on 21st Century Policing and a series of performance improvement initiatives.   After being promoted to the rank of major, Johnson commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major Johnson is a graduate of Southern High School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville (U of L). He has received certifications in LEAN and Six Sigma. He also earned certification as a Balanced Scorecard Professional in advanced strategic planning.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Joshua Judah Major Judah has been a police officer for 16 years, joining the former Louisville Division of Police in 2001. He served as a patrol officer all across Louisville, in neighborhoods ranging from Crescent Hill, Clifton, The Highlands, Downtown, Phoenix Hill, Old Louisville, Russell, Shawnee and Portland. He served as a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit for three years, investigating physical, sexual, and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro. He was promoted to sergeant in 2009, where he served in the 3rd Division in southwest Louisville. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2011 and served in the Chief’s Office and the 4th Division. Major Judah was most recently the commander of LMPD’s Technical Services Unit, which encompasses all of LMPD’s technical projects. Examples of these projects include body cameras, in-car cameras, investigative software applications, in-car computers, and gunshot detection systems. Major Judah was also responsible for the Real Time Crime Center, which monitors LMPD’s nearly 200 surveillance cameras, as well as the Crime Information Center, which analyzes crime trends and provides strategic intelligence for the LMPD and its law-enforcement partners in the region. Major Judah holds a BA in History from Centre College and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. He was the recipient of LMPD’s Commanding Officer of the Year award in 2015. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision class 39 at Eastern Kentucky University, the 127th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville, and the 263rd Session of the FBI National Academy. Major Judah lives in Louisville with his wife Katie and their daughters, Miriam and Leah.
