Metro Council Passes FY 18-19 Budgets

ml

Metro Council this week approved operating and capital budgets for Fiscal Year 18-19, which begins on July 1.

The approved budget continues to heavily fund public safety and infrastructure, including paving and sidewalks. It increases funding for the Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods, which is helping to reduce crime in Louisville, in ways proven to work around the country.  It maintains historically high funding for affordable housing, over $40 Million for affordable housing, including $10 Million to the Louisville Affordable Housing Trust Fund in each of the last two years.

The Council also increased appropriations to the Library, funding new positions to open the Northeast Regional Library without cutting staff at the Main Library. Funding for the Living Room project, which diverts people from the jail and emergency rooms to a place where they can receive needed services was increased, Dare to Care and New Roots funding was doubled, appropriating a total of $270,000 to address Louisville’s food insecurity issues.

The budget also funds personnel and equipment to double the City’s graffiti abatement program and increases funding for Waterfront Park, to address an operating deficit caused by the elimination of state funding. There is also a $1,000,000 appropriation to address issues at the Impound Lot, and to better handle the abandoned vehicles on our streets.

Both the operating and capital budgets were passed by broad margins (21-3 and 20-4), with support from most members of both parties.
