Metro Offices will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th for Independence Day and will reopen on Thursday, July 5th.
There is an Air Quality Alert for Friday (6/29) in Louisville and Southern Indiana. Ozone is forecast to be Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (seniors, children, people with breathing ailments like asthma and COPD). The general public is not likely to be affected.
There will be no residential garbage, recycling or yard waste
collection within the Louisville Metro Urban Services District (former
Louisville city limits) on Independence Day, Wednesday July 4. The usual
Wednesday collections will be made on Thursday, and the regular Friday
collections will happen on Saturday.
The Waste Reduction Center, at 600 Meriwether Avenue, all
staffed recycling centers and the Haz Bin hazardous materials facility at 7501
Grade Lane will also be closed on July 4. They will resume normal operations on
Thursday, July 5.
Residents who rely on private haulers for garbage, recycling
and yard waste collection should consult those haulers about holiday collection
schedules.
The Metro Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether
Avenue, will accept drop-off of residential storm debris from Thursday, June 28
through Saturday, July 7. Eligible debris includes tree limbs and other
compostable materials. No construction or demolition materials, shingles,
municipal garbage or manmade materials will be accepted.
The free service is available to
Jefferson County residents only. Contractors or persons for hire must pay
according to the posted fee schedule. They are not included in the free
service.
To qualify for the free drop-off
residents must present the attendant government issued identification verifying
Jefferson County residency. Storm debris will be accepted at the Waste
Reduction Center Tuesday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.,
and Saturday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In addition to our 30 spraygrounds and spraypads, Louisville Parks & Recreation offers four outdoor pools to help keep you cool in the summer. Admission is $2 for children 13 and under, and $3 for adults 14 and over. Photo identification is required for anyone age 9 or older; children 8 and under must be accompanied by a guardian 12 or older with photo identification. Louisville Parks can make identification cards for children who need them for $4 per card; call (502) 897-9949 for details. You can also click here to see a list of Metro Louisville pools and spraygrounds.
- Yard waste (leaves, grass, trimmings) is recycled and kept out of landfills.
- Yard waste may not be mixed with garbage. Do not set out yard waste with your garbage. It is unlawful for waste haulers to collect yard waste and garbage together.
- Residents in the Urban Services District may set out yard waste in reusable containers, paper bags, or bundles. Yard waste is collected on the same day as recycling.
- Residents outside the Urban Services District may have to request yard waste service. Contact your waste hauler.

Plan ahead for disposal
Renovating or remodeling? Don't start the demolition process until you make a plan for disposing of the resulting debris. Construction and demolition debris is prohibited by ordinance in Louisville garbage and junk pickup collection. Our collection crews have recently been reminded to enforce the ordinance consistently. That means crews are not picking up normally permissible collection material that has construction or demo materials mixed in. They are instead marking the material and leaving a notice at the subject residence.
So what can you do with C&D debris?
- One option for disposing of construction and demolition debris is to haul it to our Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue. Fees are variable depending on volume. More information and a fee schedule are available here.
- A second option for large volumes of debris is to hire a hauling company. Often, a single pickup truck can get the job done in a single trip. For even larger volumes, some hauling companies will drop off a large dumpster at your home and then retrieve it after you're done filling it.
