Free tax preparation for residents filing past due returns

LOUISVILLE, KY (June 5, 2018) – Although the 2017 tax filing season has ended, there is still free help available in preparing past due and amended tax returns.  Now through October, the Louisville Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, or VITA, will provide federal and state income tax assistance to income eligible residents who need help filing prior returns. It is also still possible to receive a refund for returns from the years 2015 to 2017 for those who qualify. Taxpayers earning $64,000 can make an appointment with a VITA team member by calling (502) 574-5687.

Summer/early fall VITA tax preparation sites are located at the following:

• The Edison Center, 701 W Ormsby, Suite 201, 40203 -  Tuesdays, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
• Louisville Urban League 1535 W Broadway, 40203 - Wednesday, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. 

The IRS lists the following reasons for filing past due returns:

• Avoid interest and penalties
  File your past due return and pay now to limit interest charges and late payment penalties. 

• Claim a Refund
  You risk losing your refund if you do not file your return. If you are due a refund for withholding or estimated taxes, you must file your return to claim it within three years of the return due date. The same rule applies to a right to claim tax credits such as the Earned Income Credit.

• Protect Social Security Benefits
  If you are self-employed and do not file your federal income tax return, any self-employment income you earned will not be reported to the Social Security Administration and you will not receive credits toward Social Security retirement or disability benefits. 

• Avoid Issues Obtaining Loans
  Loan approvals may be delayed if you do not file your return. Copies of filed tax returns must be submitted to financial institutions, mortgage lenders/brokers, etc., whenever you want to buy or refinance a home, get a loan for a business, or apply for federal aid for higher education.
• If You Owe More Than You Can Pay 
  If you cannot pay what you owe, you can request an additional 60-120 days to pay your account in full through the Online Payment Agreement Application or by calling 800-829-1040; no user fee will be charged. If you need more time to pay, you can request an installment agreement or you may qualify for an offer in compromise.

Amended tax returns may be necessary if you excluded a source of income when filing your original return, and are required by the IRS to add the additional document. Also taxpayers are often not aware of the credits that they are eligible when they file their original return and in these cases the VITA team can assist them in filing for these credits.  For example, many taxpayers are not aware that educational expenses can be used as a credit in many cases.

Please be sure to bring the following items to your appointment with a VITA representative:

• Social security card for everyone on tax return
• Picture ID for taxpayer and spouse
• W-2 and 1099 from employer
• List of other income/expenses
• 1098 for education credit
• 1095-A for certain healthcare credits
• Blank check or account info for direct deposit
• Savings account and routing numbers if you would like to save a portion of your refund
• Schedule C’s also prepared for self-employment
• For amended returns, a copy of the original tax return. 

“We encourage residents who missed the date to file their tax returns or who have returns that need to be amended to file so that they can claim the refunds and credits for which they are eligible,” said Brittany Sims, Program Director for the Louisville Asset Building Coalition (LABC) which administers the local VITA program.  “We also encourage taxpayers who believe that they will owe money to file as soon as possible, and we can assist them with setting up a payment plan.”

During the 2017 tax filing season, LABC prepared almost 8,400 returns that provided an average refund of $1,695 at twelve sites in Louisville.

The work of the Louisville Asset Building Coalition (LABC) is funded locally by Louisville Metro Government, Metro United Way and several other partners.  Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services also provides administrative, marketing and technical support, as well as a shared mission to build the financial stability of the residents in our community.

Light The Night 5k

You are invited to participate in the Light The Night 5K & Family Fun Run. This fun energetic night run event will raise money to provide support for the Elizabethtown Police Foundation & Supporting Heroes Fund. Participants will enjoy a unique race featuring glow lights, neon paint stations, lighted police cruisers and a laser light dance party for the whole family. The event will be held Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Freeman Lake Park in Elizabethtown. The pre-race party will start at 7:00 pm, followed by the 5k at 8pm. Awards & post race dance party will start at 8:45 pm. Each finisher will receive a custom 5k medal and a FREE donut as they cross the finish line. New Toll Rates Effective July 1st

Toll rates are updated every year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 5, 2018) –  New toll rates for the three tolled bridges connecting Louisville and Southern Indiana begin July 1, 2018. The 2.5 percent increase is the first rate increase for RiverLink, the tolling system for the Ohio River Bridges Project.

Tolling, a bi-state effort between Indiana and Kentucky, started Dec. 30, 2016. Toll rates increase annually by 2.5 percent, unless the rate of inflation (as measured by the Consumer Price Index) is higher. Tolls increase every July 1, beginning in 2018. There was not an increase in 2017 because tolling had been in place for less than a year.

The new toll rate for a passenger vehicle with a prepaid account and transponder is $2.05 per crossing. The current toll rate is $2 per crossing.

Drivers with prepaid accounts and transponders pay the lowest toll rates. With the new rates, the savings will be more than $2 per crossing. Account holders must maintain a positive account balance to pay the lowest rates and avoid invoices.  The easiest way to always have an account in good standing is by choosing auto-replenishment and linking the account to a valid payment method.

RiverLink is all-electronic tolling, with no stopping, no slowing, no lines and no coin machines. New toll rates range from $2.05-$12.30, depending on the size of the vehicle. Tolling is in place on the I-65 Abraham Lincoln Bridge, I-65 Kennedy Bridge and SR 265/KY 841 Lewis and Clark Bridge connecting Prospect, Ky. and Utica, Ind.

Crime Mapping

First Division

Major Eric Johnson Johnson began his career in 1999 with the Louisville Division of Police (LPD). Prior to merger, he served as a patrol officer and a flex detective in the former Third and Fifth Districts. After merger, Johnson served in the Fourth Division and Metro Narcotics. In August 2005, Johnson was promoted to Sergeant and served in the First Division as a patrol and Division Detective supervisor.  In April 2013, Johnson was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Second Division.  In October 2013, Johnson became the Strategic Planning Lieutenant, where he oversaw the department's strategic plan, the Mayor’s LouieStat program, the department’s response to the President's Report on 21st Century Policing and a series of performance improvement initiatives.   After being promoted to the rank of major, Johnson commanded the Administrative Services Division. Major Johnson is a graduate of Southern High School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville (U of L). He has received certifications in LEAN and Six Sigma. He also earned certification as a Balanced Scorecard Professional in advanced strategic planning.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Joshua Judah Major Judah has been a police officer for 16 years, joining the former Louisville Division of Police in 2001. He served as a patrol officer all across Louisville, in neighborhoods ranging from Crescent Hill, Clifton, The Highlands, Downtown, Phoenix Hill, Old Louisville, Russell, Shawnee and Portland. He served as a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit for three years, investigating physical, sexual, and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro. He was promoted to sergeant in 2009, where he served in the 3rd Division in southwest Louisville. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2011 and served in the Chief’s Office and the 4th Division. Major Judah was most recently the commander of LMPD’s Technical Services Unit, which encompasses all of LMPD’s technical projects. Examples of these projects include body cameras, in-car cameras, investigative software applications, in-car computers, and gunshot detection systems. Major Judah was also responsible for the Real Time Crime Center, which monitors LMPD’s nearly 200 surveillance cameras, as well as the Crime Information Center, which analyzes crime trends and provides strategic intelligence for the LMPD and its law-enforcement partners in the region. Major Judah holds a BA in History from Centre College and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. He was the recipient of LMPD’s Commanding Officer of the Year award in 2015. He is a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision class 39 at Eastern Kentucky University, the 127th Session of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville, and the 263rd Session of the FBI National Academy. Major Judah lives in Louisville with his wife Katie and their daughters, Miriam and Leah.
