Update from Louisville Water on Eastern Parkway work

From Louisville Water:  Louisville Water’s work on Eastern Parkway between Beargrass Creek and I -65 is nearing its completion.  The slip lining is complete but we still need to complete the connection between the newly renovated main and a new section of main being installed in conjunction with the State’s bridge work at Eastern Parkway and Beargrass Creek.  We expect the main work associated with this project to be finalized by the end of May. We are currently working on yard, pavement and sidewalk restoration and hope to have this work complete by the end of May.

Keep reporting those potholes - don't assume someone else has done it

May 12 - Throo the Zoo 25th anniversary of the wildest 5K in town

Registration is now open for the 25th anniversary of the wildest 5K in town, Throo the Zoo, which will take runners around the Louisville Zoo on May 12. Race proceeds benefit the Louisville Zoo, which is dedicated to its mission of bettering the bond between people and our planet.

One of Louisville’s most distinctive road events, the course takes participants “throo” the Zoo — past some of their favorite animals and exhibits. The start and finish lines are just outside the Zoo gate, but along the way, participants will be able to see bears, lions and giraffes. The chip-timed course is open to runners and walkers at all fitness levels, including guests with strollers.

Through July - The Evolution of Camp Zachary Taylor exhibit at The Filson Historical Society

The Evolution of Camp Zachary Taylor exhibit is now open at The Filson Historical Society, 1310 S. 3rd Street.  In 1917, nearly three thousand acres of farmland and open fields were transformed into an active military camp with around two thousand buildings; four short years later the land, buildings, and equipment were auctioned off, and the Camp Taylor neighborhood was born. In this exhibit, images and documents from the Filson's collection illustrate the history of Camp Zachary Taylor, Louisville's World War I cantonment. TARC Shuttle Service to Churchill Downs 

Free shuttle service provided for Opening Day, Thurby, Oaks and Derby
The Transit Authority of River City (TARC) will provide free shuttle service to Churchill Downs from Papa John’s Stadium on April 28 and the Kentucky Exposition Center (KEC) May 3 - 5. 

Opening Day Shuttle Service, Saturday, April 28
Parking at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium will be free with complimentary shuttle service to Churchill Downs Transport Plaza. Parking, pick-up and drop-off will be located in Green Lot A. TARC will be proving this service from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Thurby, Oaks and Derby Shuttle Service, May 3 – 5
On Thurby (May 3), guests can park for free at the KEC WITHOUT a parking pass. The KEC parking lots will open at 10 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. Guests should enter the KEC via gates 1, 2, 4 or 6. Shuttles will be running from the Kentucky Exposition Center to Churchill Downs and back on a continuous loop between 10 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Thurby.

On Oaks (May 4) and Derby (May 5), only attendees WITH reserved parking can park at the Kentucky Exposition Center. The KEC parking lot will open at 7 a.m. Guests should enter the KEC via gates 1, 2, 4 or 6. On Oaks, shuttles will be running from the Kentucky Exposition Center to Churchill Downs and back on a continuous loop between 7 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. On Derby, shuttles will be running between 7 a.m. and 11:30 p.m.

On Derby and Oaks days, TARC service will also be available at the regularly scheduled times on all routes that are not on detour for the races. Regular fares will apply. One-way adult cash fare is $1.75. Routes providing the closest access to Churchill Downs are:   #4 – Fourth Street; #6 – Sixth Street; and #29 – Eastern Parkway. 

Passengers are encouraged to plan their trips ahead by checking Oaks and Derby routes and schedules on TARC’s website. Route #4 covers parts of downtown, the University of Louisville, Old Louisville, and neighborhoods near Iroquois Park. Route #6 provides service in downtown, Iroquois Park neighborhoods and the area near Auburndale.  Route #29 connects Shively, U of L, the Highlands and St. Matthews.

TARC to replace older buses

The Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Buses and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program announced that the Transit Authority of River City (TARC) will be awarded $3.6M to purchase new buses to replace its oldest and highest mileage buses in its fleet. Executive Director J. Barry Barker states that “these funds will allow us to replace the remainder of the 1999 model year buses and a few of the 2000 model year buses.” With a total fleet of 225 buses including 33 hybrid-electric, 15 all-electric with an additional 102 paratransit vehicles, this award will go towards replacing some of the more than 60 buses that have traveled over 500,000 miles – 23 with 700,000 plus miles. Kentucky is one of 52 states and territories being awarded approximately $264 million to fund a total of 139 projects, according to the program. As the largest public transit agency in Kentucky, TARC provides service to Greater Louisville and Southern Indiana, carrying nearly 12 million passengers a year, with almost 60 percent of its 50,000 daily trips moving tax payers to work and another 20 percent to school. “Thank you to our entire Congressional Delegation who were very instrumental in assisting us in make these funds available through their legislative efforts and the team at FTA who worked diligently in administering the Bus and Bus Facilities Program,” said Barker. Below-cost hepatitis A immunizations offered to Louisville restaurants for their workers 

As we approach Derby, the Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness and the University of Louisville Global Health Center are teaming up to offer Louisville restaurants below-cost hepatitis A immunizations for their workers.  Shots have been discounted from $65 each to $25 each while supply lasts.

Any restaurants and other hospitality businesses may take advantage of this offer. Contact Dr. Ruth Carrico, UofL Global Health Center at 852-1324.

If a restaurant has 20 or more employees, nurses can come to their site to give shots.  Restaurants with fewer than 20 employees may designate vaccine for their employees at U of L’s walk-in clinic at 501 E. Broadway.

Getting vaccinated and good hand washing are the best ways to curb the spread of hepatitis A. The current outbreak stands at more than 200 cases. By getting their employees vaccinated, restaurants will be protecting their employees and their customers from this disease.

June 16 - Ohio River Sweep

Louisville MSD sponsors Ohio River Sweep with the Ohio River Valley Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO), LG&E and Louisville Water. It is one of the largest annual environmental cleanups in the United States. On June 16, thousands of volunteers will remove tons of trash and debris, from the Ohio River's origin in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to its end in Cairo, Illinios, including nearly 3,000 miles of shoreline and many tributaries. Camp Taylor area MSD sanitary sewer replacement project updates 

How to file a damage claim with MSD

From MSD: Property Owners may file damage claims by calling MSD Customer Relations at 587-0603. They will need to reference the Camp Taylor Sewer Project, provide their name, address, phone number, and a brief description of their damage claim.  MSD will then forward the information to our contractor for them to investigate and render a decision on the claim in writing to the property owner. Additional information may be required such as receipts or photos as applicable. If the contractor denies responsibility for the claim, the property owner may appeal the decision by contacting MSD Customer Relations again and request that the claim be evaluated by MSD.  New LouieConnect site connects people to help

Louisville non-profits have launched a new website to help connect people in need of food, shelter and more. Metro United Way and the Family Scholar House partnered to create LouieConnect, modeling it on a similar site created in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When someone uses LouieConnect, the web-based app asks for basic information and then lists applicable resources nearby — from food pantries to shelters to career centers to financial literacy programs.

Discounted Recycle Carts still available for $25 for District 10 residents - in 95-gallon or 64 gallon size

The discounted recycle cart program has been re-instituted by Councilman Mulvihill and now offers two sizes: the 95-gallon carts and smaller 64 gallon carts.  The photos at left show the sizes (64 gallon on the left).

The carts normally cost $50, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $25. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form. The reduced cost recycle carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are depleted. This offer is available to urban service district residents.

Sign up for LENSAlert (Smart911) 

Click here to sign up for the LENSAlert (Louisville Emergency Notification System).  In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right responders to the right location with the right information. Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.
