Fairdale Mural Project Completed As Birthday Gift To Mayor Fischer

The Fairdale High School and Fairdale Community School students were presented Proclamations by Councilwoman Vicki Welch in honor of their work in designing and painting the mural on the poolhouse at 
Nelson Hornbeck Park for the Mayor's Birthday.

As part of Mayor Greg Fischer’s Give-A-Day week of volunteer service across the city of Louisville, the mayor himself was honored Monday with the unveiling of a mural at Nelson Hornbeck Park in Fairdale. The mural is a birthday present from his sister Lynn, who provided the materials for the project through a gift to the Louisville Parks Foundation. Art students from Fairdale High School and Fairdale Community School designed and painted the mural. 

“This is a fabulous partnership between the Louisville Parks Foundation, Fairdale High School art department, Fairdale Community School, and Council District 13,” said Vicki Welch, who represents the Fairdale area for the Louisville Metro Council.   “I truly appreciate Lucretia Moore, District 13 resident and Ramsey Middle School art teacher, who has stepped up to lead this project. Also, Mr. Gibbs Rounsavall, art teacher, and Kathy Blevins, Director of Fairdale Community School, were instrumental in getting this project coordinated. As a birthday gift to Mayor Fischer, his sister Lynn Fischer is also a valuable partner. A huge appreciation to all!”

“I was in search of something special for Greg’s big birthday in January,” Lynn Fischer said. “I then learned the Fairdale High School art class was working on a mural for the Nelson Hornbeck pool house, and the Louisville Parks Foundation needed the paint to bring their design to life. It seemed a perfect gift to acknowledge Greg’s love for Louisville and commitment to our City values of health and life-long learning for all of our citizens. The ability to have the students and teachers paint the mural during Give A Day week was, no pun intended, icing on the cake!”

Colonial Gardens Project Breaks Ground and Demolition Begins

Mayor Greg Fischer and Southend Council members, joined developers Jeff and Todd Underhill Friday April 13 as demolition of the $5,000,000 project begins.  Jeff Underhill says it's a big undertaking for his team as they plan to build two new buildings on the property, remodel the existing Colonial Gardens building and build a beer garden in the center.

Four restaurants will occupy the property to serve the local residents and the thousands of visitors who attend events and concerts at the Iroquois Amphitheater and Iroquois Park each year.  As neighbors watched, many remember the storied history of the famous Louisville Landmark and all agree that the project is a welcomed and potential focal point for future development in the area.

Vince Jarboe, President of the Southwest Dream Team “sees great potential for this new development to be home to successful new businesses and also to help attract new visitors, both local and foreign, to this rapidly growing area of Louisville.” 

The Southwest Dream Team looks forward to witnessing the growth of Colonial Gardens, and recognizes them as a key player in the future of the South Points Scenic Area.

Ride TARC to Thunder Over Louisville

TARC is increasing service into downtown Louisville and designating six post-event boarding areas for Thunder Over Louisville on Saturday, Apr.  21. The service plan mirrors TARC service for Thunder in recent years with the exception of an added boarding location on Broadway at 11th.

• Beginning at 3:30 p.m., on the day of the fireworks, more buses will be added on routes serving downtown, improving the frequency of bus arrival times at stops and adding capacity. 
• Regular TARC fares will apply.  A one-way fare is $1.75 or 80 cents for passengers over the age of 65, riders with disabilities and ages 6-17. TARC ID is required for reduced fare. Children under the age of 5 ride free.
• Post-event boarding in downtown Louisville will be restricted to six locations, most within blocks of the waterfront. Eastbound 15, 19 and 31 buses serving District 9 will board on Market near Floyd. Buses will operate until 11 p.m. at those locations. 

Register to Vote by April 23

The deadline for registering to vote in Kentucky before the May Primary Election is rapidly approaching and it’s easier than ever to do so. Monday, April 23, is the last day to register to vote in the May 22 election. Kentuckians can now register to vote, and check and update their registrations online, at this website.   Voters who will be outside Jefferson County on Election Day are among those who can vote absentee.  More information about voting absentee, both by mail and in-house, is here. If you qualify to vote by absentee ballot, you can do that now at the Jefferson County Clerk’s Election Center, which has moved to 701 West Ormsby Avenue, Suite 301. In-house absentee voting is available for qualified individuals on Monday through Friday from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, and on Saturday, May 12 and Saturday, May 19 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.  Exercise your right to register and vote in 2018!

"Kingdom Zipline" at Jefferson Memorial Forest Opens June 1

Zipline Kingdom is set to open to the public on June 1, 2018.    Tentative operating hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through mid-August.  The price for the three-hour adventure is $70, but the first visit is free for Kentucky Kingdom season pass holders.  Online reservations for the attraction can be made starting May 15, at ziplinekingdom.com.

Public Works 2018 Tentative Mowing Schedule

Public Works develops a tentative mowing schedule before each mowing season annually. This schedule is utilized as a template for when to begin each cycle and assist with budget preparation for the upcoming season. This schedule is flexible and may be altered based on the varying weather conditions and climate changes that occur. For example if spring and early summer rains are above normal then the second cycle may need to be moved up due to faster growing vegetation. By the same token if drought conditions present themselves then mowing schedule may need to be moved back or even eliminated if grass goes dormant and is not growing. These decisions are made using a delicate balancing between Mother Nature and budget constraints. (See the tentative mowing schedule below)

Brightside Premium Compost Sale & Coupon - April 20-21

Get ready for spring with Brightside and Waste Management of Kentucky’s Premium Compost Sale on Friday, April 20 & Saturday, April 21 and Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28 from 9:00 a.m. – Noon at Joe Creason Park, 1297 Trevilian Way. Cost is $2.50 per bag or $40 per cubic meter scoop.

Compost helps in a variety of ways by keeping weeds down, keeping the soil cool, helping winter root development, top dressing for fertilizing lawns, providing an aesthetically pleasing landscape and improving soil texture and pH. 

Municipal compost is a mixture of leaves, chipped tree limbs and yard waste composted into an earthy, well mixed organic soil amendment.
