City outlines plan to distribute $100,000 in flood assistance donated by Petrino family
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 9, 2018) –Mayor Greg Fischer joined with U of L Football Coach Bobby Petrino today to announce plans for a special flood relief fund to help aid families who have been hit hard by the flooding. The fund was created with a $100,000 donation from Bobby and Becky Petrino and the Petrino Family Foundation, as part of its #LoveLouisville campaign, and will go to families displaced by the flood, as well as to help people cover some of their clean-up and recovery costs. Households that meet income eligibility requirements and other criteria can get up to $1000 to cover emergency expenses caused by the flooding.
In order to qualify, applicants must be Jefferson residents with a household income at or below 80 percent of Area Media Income (AMI) and must have been living in their home as a primary residence at the time of the flood. The funds can be used to cover the first month’s rent and deposits up to $1,000 for displaced families who are in need of a new or temporary residence. Funds may also be used to purchase cleaning, household or other emergency supplies.
Residents who want to apply can contact MetroCall 311 by simply dialing 311 or 574-5000, email metro.call@louisvilleky.gov, visit the website’s On Line Customer Service or Live Chat at www.louisvilleky.gov/metrocall, tweet @LouMetro311, or download the free Mobile 311 app from the website. Con artists demand
immediate payment, threaten Kentuckians with jail time
FRANKFORT, Ky. (March 2, 2018) – In a new scam alert issued by Attorney General Andy
Beshear, Kentuckians are being warned of scammers posing as law enforcement
officials demanding payment and threatening arrest via text messages.
Kentuckians in Greenup, Jefferson and Montgomery counties have recently
reported losing more than $110,000 after they thought they were sending payment
to an official law enforcement agency. Beshear said Kentuckians are now reporting a
number of text messages from con artists identifying themselves as prosecutors
or police officers who claim a lawsuit and arrest warrant have been issued and
unless Kentuckians call within 30 minutes to make a payment, they will go to
jail for six months. Beshear said the best way to avoid the scam is to
know that no law enforcement office would ever send a text message to demand
payment or threaten arrest. “We are constantly working with our many partners
to track down and hold accountable anyone who wrongly uses the name of a law
enforcement agency to threaten or hurt Kentucky families,” Beshear
said. To sign up to receive Scam Alerts, text the words KYOAG Scam
to GOV311 (468311), or enroll online at ag.ky.gov/scams.
To report a scam to the Office of the Attorney General, dial 888-432-9257 or
file a consumer complaint online.

This
year’s Give A Day week is set for April 14-22, and is an official Kentucky Derby
Festival event that kicks off the festival season. Give A Day week also leads into the 2018 Festival of Faiths, another
volunteer-driven event. “The people of Louisville give of their time, talent and treasure every
single day, which is how we’ve earned recognition as an International Model
City of Compassion year after year,” the Mayor said. “The Give A Day week of
service is our way to showcase and celebrate all those great efforts in one
week. I am so grateful for all those who help make this annual event bigger
every year.” The ultimate goal, he said, is to see compassion
spread. This
year, all 130,000+ K-12 students enrolled in JCPS, Archdiocese of Louisville
and independent and private schools will be invited to participate in this
project, which encourages students and educators to create and sustain a
culture of kindness, recognition and gratitude.
Other
projects this year include: ·
The annual Walk of Compassion, a short, student-led walk through
downtown on April 17 to celebrate our young people in grades 3-12 who have committed themselves to community service. Downtown workers
and others are invited to join more than 4,000 students participating in the
lunch-time walk, which is sponsored by WLKY. They are already collecting hygiene products to be shared with JCPS’ resource
centers and the community. Highland Cleaners has agreed to serve as the
drop-off center for citizens wanting to contribute.
·
The Build A Bed project, which is a JCPS-AmeriCorps-sponsored
effort to build beds for children who otherwise don’t have one. New this year,
volunteers will be building about a half dozen bunk beds. With the support of
nearly a dozen local companies, including K&I Lumber, this project provides
a bed, bedding, books and stuffed animals – some of the basics of a good
night’s sleep.
Individuals
or groups wanting to find a project for Give A Day week are encouraged to visit
www.mygiveaday.com, where projects and needs submitted by
local non-profit agencies and other groups are listed. There you can also
record your acts of compassion. The
Mayor urged individuals and companies to use the website to report their own
community service. “If your church or civic group is doing a project that week,
let us know about it so it can count toward our new world record,” he said. The
Brightside and Passport Health Plan Community-Wide Cleanup on April 14 is one
of the most popular ways to participate in Give A Day. Every year, thousands
help clean up neighborhoods, schools and parks. To learn more: https://louisvilleky.gov/government/brightside/brightside-passport-health-plan-community-wide-cleanup

Jefferson County put almost 879,000 tons of solid waste
into landfills in the year 2015 according to a solid waste study released in
January. The study also found that 67 percent of that material could be
diverted away from landfills through recycling or reuse.
One of the biggest problems, as seen in the above pie
chart, is that only 18 percent of waste generated in Louisville/Jefferson
County residences is being recycled or otherwise diverted from
landfills. That percentage would increase if more residents participated
in available recycling programs. See the feature below for how to begin
recycling.
The study is a comprehensive look at all sources of solid
waste in the community and recommends ways to keep more of each category out of
landfills. The recommendations will be studied by Public Works, Metro
Council and the Louisville/Jefferson County Solid Waste District, with
additional public input, before any potential changes are made. Read the full report.
Reporting potholes is easier than ever! Keeping our roads and community pristine is an important issue for everyone in the area. Follow any of the three simple methods listed below when you see a pothole and Public Works will respond as soon as they can in order to fill them.
· Click here to use our easy online form.
· Use Twitter by including the hashtag #502pothole and the location of the hole in any tweet.
· Call MetroCall 311 or 574-5000 to report potholes or any other issues. You may also email them at metro.call@louisvilleky.gov

US 31W (Dixie Highway): Lane closures and delays
possible between Greenwood Road and Heaton Road (mile markers 11.7 to 14.5) due
to median removal, roadway re-striping and traffic shifts for future
construction. Crews will be working on the northbound lanes of Dixie Highway
between Greenwood Road and Blanton Lane and on the southbound lanes between
Heaton Road and Upper Hunters Trace. Lane closures are possible on weekdays 9
a.m. – 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. and on weekends from 7 p.m. on Friday
until 5 a.m. on Monday.
Log on to goky.ky.gov for the latest in statewide
traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
|
|
While temperatures are still conducive for applying roadway paint,
workers will also re-stripe these sections of Dixie Highway to prepare for new
traffic patterns. Permanent lane closures will not begin until after the first
of the year when traffic will be shifted and the roadway reduced to two lanes
in each direction through the work zone.
Some TARC bus stops will be impacted during this work. Riders
should visit ridetarc.org for more information or
contact TARC’s customer service line at 502-585-1234.
The date and duration of
this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. The New Dixie Highway Project is designed to improve safety and traffic efficiency along one of the city’s busiest corridors, and will include new fiber-linked traffic signals, new concrete and landscaped medians, and a bus rapid transit line from TARC.
