 Last year, more than 160 companies and organizations hired SummerWorks youth. And already, momentum is building for this summer, with many employers hiring youth through the program for the first time, including Hilliard Lyons, Kelley Construction, Kentuckiana Comfort Center, iQor, Louisville Bats and Spectrum. Other companies, including Kentucky Kingdom and Thorntons, are increasing the number of young people they hire.
Other businesses that have committed to hiring SummerWorks youth this year include 4th Street Live, Dare to Care, GlowTouch Technologies, Interapt, Kindred Healthcare, Kroger, Louisville Zoo, Oxmoor Auto Group, Speedway and YMCA of Greater Louisville.

Residents who are currently in need of utility assistance are encouraged to
call their local Community Ministry or Neighborhood Place. Call Metro
United Way’s 2-1-1 help referral service or MetroCall 311 to locate the nearest
site.
Residents who are currently disconnected from services with their utility
provider can walk into any of the six LIHEAP locations now through March 16,
Monday through Thursday, 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. and from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. and will
be seen upon availability. No LIHEAP funding will be allocated for these
disconnected households, but staff will contact LG&E to see if clients are
eligible for payment arrangements.
Starting March 19 through March 30, those individuals who have been
disconnected can walk into one of these three LIHEAP locations: Newburg
Community Center, South Central Neighborhood Place and Ujima Neighborhood Place.
The same hours and criteria listed above apply including no LIHEAP funding will
be allocated at this time.

This
year’s Give A Day week is set for April 14-22, although the Mayor noted that
many projects will be under way earlier, to avoid conflicts with Thunder over
Louisville at the end of the week.
Give A Day is an official Kentucky Derby
Festival event, and kicks off the festival season. This
year’s Give A Day week also leads into the 2018 Festival of Faiths, another
volunteer-driven event. “The
people of Louisville give of their time, talent and treasure every single day,
which is how we’ve earned recognition as an International Model City of
Compassion year after year,” the Mayor said. “The Give A Day week of service is
our way to showcase and celebrate all those great efforts in one week. I am so
grateful for all those who help make this annual event bigger every year.”Individuals or groups wanting to find a project for Give A Day week are encouraged to visit http://www.mygiveaday.com, where projects and needs submitted by local non-profit agencies and other groups are listed. There you can also record your acts of compassion.
The Mayor urged individuals and companies to use the website to report their own community service. “If your church or civic group is doing a project that week, let us know about it so it can count toward our new world record,” he said.

Companies and organizations of all sizes also will have employee teams in action, including GE, Computershare, UPS and Ford. Mayor Fischer said having Give A Day week as the lead-up to the Kentucky Derby Festival helps put Louisville’s caring deeds in the world spotlight. And Festival president and CEO Mike Berry said the timing is perfect. “With more than 70 events to produce each year, we couldn’t do it without our large network of volunteers,” Berry said.
 After a successful inaugural event last year that saw more than 1,000 children attend, Louisville Parks and Recreation is hosting an Easter Egg Hunt at Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing on Saturday, March 24.
The event will begin at 10 a.m., and five age groups will participate in this year’s hunt:
Ages 10-12: 10:30 – 11 a.m.
Ages 8-10: 11-11:30 a.m.
Ages 7-9: 11:30 a.m. – noon
Ages 4-6: Noon-12:30 p.m.
Ages 1-3: 1:30 – 2 p.m.
The cost to participate in the event is $2 per child. Music, crafts and food trucks will all be on site at Riverside on March 24 for additional entertainment options.

Pothole Blitz 2018 is officially
underway. Public Works crews are moving across the city in a grid
pattern in the annual concentrated to patch potholes created by the repeated
freeze-thaw cycles of winter. The end of winter blitz is in addition to
year round patching of potholes reported by citizens.
Citizens can help in the blitz by reporting potholes to
MetroCall in one of three easy ways. Those using the social network Twitter
can use the hashtag 502pothole. Include the hashtag along with the address or
nearest intersection of the pothole location in any tweet and MetroCall will
get the message.
There’s also a pothole reporting form at the top of the
city website, Louisvilleky.gov.
Click on the “Report a pothole” link, put in the location information and
press send. Of course, citizens may also call MetroCall at 311 or 574-5000.
The 502pothole hashtag and the online form offer the advantage of avoiding
the potential for having to wait on hold on the telephone.

Choir Concert

Break Camp
The Catholic Enrichment Center of the Archdiocese

Explosion Camp again this year. The theme is “Art” focusing on visual arts,

enrolled in grades 1-8. The camp will take place Monday, April 2 through

will offer a Thea Bowman Certificate Class on Saturday, April 14, 2018, 9:00

40203. The course topic is “From Mass to Mission”, presented by Dr. Kathleen
Dorsey Bellow. Dr. Bellow served as principal of
Sacred Heart/Saint Katharine Drexel Catholic School in Lake Charles,
Louisiana. Her professional experience represents commitments to various
disciplines, including small business management, pastoral ministry and
community development. Dr. Bellow is a faculty member of Xavier University
of Louisiana’s Institute for Black Catholic Studies. Currently, she is the
Convener of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium. The cost of the
session is $25.00 per person which includes materials and a working lunch. The
registration fee will be $30.00 cash only on the day of the course. The Thea
Bowman Program offers a certificate in African American Ministry Studies. It
forms students who are laity, religious and clergy in meaningful and effective
ministry within the Black community and fosters new leadership among Black
