Flood recovery, disposing of debris

The cleanup is still underway three days after Tuesday's record breaking rainfall and the debris is starting to pile up. Now, the Metro has three sites where flood victims can get rid of their debris.

The free drop off sites opened at Noon Friday, one of them is located at the Old Philip Morris plant at 18th and Broadway, not far from some of the hardest hit areas.

If you are planning to take flood debris to one of the drop off sites, there are a few things you need to know. The sites are open daily from Noon to 8 p.m. through Sunday, August 16.

Here is a list of things you can drop off:

  • Furniture
  • Carpeting
  • Clothing
  • Appliances (there will be a special dumpster for appliances with Freon, such as refrigerators and air conditioning units)

You cannot dispose of yard waste and tree limbs, construction materials, tires and raw garbage.

In addition to the 18th and Broadway site, other flood debris drop off locations are at Morris-Forman Treatment Plant, 4522 Algonquin Parkway and Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, Green Parking Lot, Floyd Street just south of Central Ave.Jefferson County residents may drop-off residential flood debris at any of seven sites Thursday March 1 through Saturday March 24.  Six of the drop-off locations will be open Thursday through Saturday, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Waste Reduction Center will be open for debris drop-off Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The free service is available for residents of Jefferson County only and it does not include commercial haulers. No yard waste or construction debris other than flood-damaged drywall and insulation will be accepted. Electronics must be separated from other items. To qualify for the free drop-off residents must present the attendant with two forms of identification verifying Louisville residency.

If a citizen hires an individual or business to remove debris, the citizen must accompany the hauler to the drop-off center or provide the hauler with the same two forms of identification to present at the facility.

Tips to Stay Safe with Floodwater

1936 flood

MSD advises residents whose homes or businesses were flooded to follow these guidelines.

Take photographs of the damage before cleanup. Residents are encouraged to begin cleanup as soon as possible; floodplain permits are not required before cleanup begins.

Flood cleanup safety tips:

• Before entering your home, check for damaged power lines, gas lines, foundation cracks and other exterior damage. It may be too dangerous to enter the home

• If you smell natural gas or propane, or hear a hissing noise, leave immediately and contact the fire department

• Do not walk into a flooded basement because of the risk of electrocution. Turn off gas, water and electricity — if you can without wading into water.

• Check news outlets for safety of the local water supply.

• Discard any food, medicine or cosmetics that may have come into contact with floodwaters.

• Floodwaters can carry chemicals and germs that could be harmful to your health. Protect yourself during cleanup by wearing boots, gloves and masks. Clean and disinfect everything that may have come in contact with floodwater.

• Open all doors and windows to circulate air and dry out your home. Dehumidify as soon as possible.

“Give A Day” Week of Service, April 14-22"

volunteer

This year’s Give A Day week is set for April 14-22, although the Mayor noted that many projects will be under way earlier, to avoid conflicts with Thunder over Louisville at the end of the week.

Give A Day is an official Kentucky Derby Festival event, and kicks off the festival season. This year’s Give A Day week also leads into the 2018 Festival of Faiths, another volunteer-driven event. “The people of Louisville give of their time, talent and treasure every single day, which is how we’ve earned recognition as an International Model City of Compassion year after year,” the Mayor said. “The Give A Day week of service is our way to showcase and celebrate all those great efforts in one week. I am so grateful for all those who help make this annual event bigger every year.”Individuals or groups wanting to find a project for Give A Day week are encouraged to visit http://www.mygiveaday.com, where projects and needs submitted by local non-profit agencies and other groups are listed. There you can also record your acts of compassion.

The Mayor urged individuals and companies to use the website to report their own community service. “If your church or civic group is doing a project that week, let us know about it so it can count toward our new world record,” he said.

The Brightside and Passport Health Plan Community-Wide Cleanup on April 14 is one of the most popular ways to participate in Give A Day. Every year, thousands help clean up neighborhoods, schools and parks. To learn more:https://louisvilleky.gov/government/brightside/brightside-passport-healt...

Companies and organizations of all sizes also will have employee teams in action, including GE, Computershare, UPS and Ford. Mayor Fischer said having Give A Day week as the lead-up to the Kentucky Derby Festival helps put Louisville’s caring deeds in the world spotlight. And Festival president and CEO Mike Berry said the timing is perfect. “With more than 70 events to produce each year, we couldn’t do it without our large network of volunteers,” Berry said.
