Last Thursday, the Metro Council held a special meeting to honor outstanding residents
and volunteers as part of its 16th Annual Black History Month Program. “Reaffirming Our Diverse Culture” is the continuing theme of the
program, which concludes the month long celebration of Black History
Month in Louisville Metro.
“For 16 years now, the Metro Council has believed it is important to
thank the many unsung heroes who give their time and talent to their
communities and neighborhoods,” says Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin (D-2)
who chairs the Committee. “Through their example, not only are those
in need helped but they inspire others to get involved in public
service. This is one way of thanking them for all they do.”
At District 6, we honoured the Rev. H. Wayne Colbert, pastor of Kingdom Land Baptist Church for over 25 years. Under his pastorate, Kingdom Land has
served the community through a variety of ministries. They include
feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and helping
the poor in the community, helping families with back to school efforts
by providing backpacks filled with school supplies, coats, hats,
gloves, and earmuffs. Under Rev. Colbert’s leadership, Kingdom Land opened The Women of
Worth (W.O.W.) House, Inc. The W.O.W. House ministers to homeless women
in the community and women on parole, providing them with housing to
allow them time to build a better life. We're grateful for all that Rev. Colbert and Kingdom Land have done to build this community, and we're proud to honour them this year.
This Saturday, the West Louisville Chess Club will be heading to the Queen City Classic. This is THE mid-West regional tournament. Over
500 players are expected (last year over 575 competed!).
At
this tournament, the West Louisville Chess Club is Louisville's largest team; they take students who truly represent Louisville's
ethnic and racial diversity. They are male and female, black and white,
Christian and Muslim...they need your support and your encouragement.
President James was honoured to speak at the Chess Club pep rally last Saturday, cheering our athletes on for the Queen City Classic. At the Metro Council and across Louisville as a whole, we're proud of our chess athletes, and wish them every success at Saturday's tournament. Break a leg! |
