Happy New Year

Christmas Tree Recycling

Bowman Aviation Festival Flyer

Metro Public Works will provide curbside pickup of Christmas Trees within the Urban Services District (the old City of Louisville boundaries) after the holiday. Beginning Tuesday, December 26, residents with City curbside yard waste pickup may set their Christmas trees and greenery out on their regular collection day. Trees must not be in plastic bags, and all decorations must be removed.

Drop-off sites will also be available for all Louisville/Jefferson County residents at three locations. Two of the three drop-off sites will also instantly recycle trees in to mulch that will be offered back to citizens for home use. Those wishing to receive mulch must bring an appropriate container in which to carry it. Trees picked up from curbside will also be recycled but not offered as mulch.

Christmas tree vendors may recycle their unsold trees on Tuesday, December 26 only, and only at the Hubbard’s Lane site.

DROP OFF LOCATIONS: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

East District Recycling Center, 595 N. Hubbards Lane (Bring containers to take home fresh mulch.)

December 26 – 29, January 2

Southwest Government Center, 7219 Dixie Highway (Bring containers to take home fresh mulch.)

December 26 – 29, January 2

Waste Reduction Center - 636 Meriwether Avenue (Tree drop-off only. Mulch is not available at this location.)

December 26 -- January 31

Residents normally serviced by private waste haulers should check with those companies to see whether and when tree pickup is available.

Electronic Recycling

TV

Don’t throw away that old television, computers or other electronic device that’s you just replaced. Let Metro Public Works recycle those newly obsolete devices instead.

Free post-holiday electronics drop-off service is available at our Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue. Drop-off will be available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on these three Saturdays: January 6, January 13 and January 20.

The special holiday promotion is in addition to our regular year round electronics recycling program. Details on the regular program are available on our website at https://louisvilleky.gov/recycling.

The Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue is CLOSED TEMPORARILY

The Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue is closed temporarily for repair. The Waste Reduction Center is a place where Louisville/Jefferson County residents can dispose of tires and household bulk waste such as appliances, electronics, tree limbs, construction debris, and furniture. More information on the center can be found here.

Dixie Highway Lane Closures

KY transportation

Below is a list of projects overseen by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet happening in Southwest Louisville.

US 31W (Dixie Highway): Lane closures and delays possible between Greenwood Road and Heaton Road (mile markers 11.7 to 14.5) due to median removal, roadway re-striping and traffic shifts for future construction. Crews will be working on the northbound lanes of Dixie Highway between Greenwood Road and Blanton Lane and on the southbound lanes between Heaton Road and Upper Hunters Trace. Lane closures are possible on weekdays 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. and on weekends from 7 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday.

Log on to goky.ky.gov for the latest in statewide traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

No lane closures will occur December 25, 2017 – January 1, 2018.

While temperatures are still conducive for applying roadway paint, workers will also re-stripe these sections of Dixie Highway to prepare for new traffic patterns. Permanent lane closures will not begin until after the first of the year when traffic will be shifted and the roadway reduced to two lanes in each direction through the work zone.

Some TARC bus stops will be impacted during this work. Riders should visit ridetarc.org for more information or contact TARC’s customer service line at 502-585-1234.

The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. The New Dixie Highway Project is designed to improve safety and traffic efficiency along one of the city’s busiest corridors, and will include new fiber-linked traffic signals, new concrete and landscaped medians, and a bus rapid transit line from TARC.

Dixie Do-Over FAQs

Road Work sign

1. Why was the traffic shifted when little to no work has been completed this year?

  • This year, most of the work was being completed at night. Prior to beginning work, the contractor and LG&E asked impacted businesses when it’s appropriate to cut gas service. The decision was made that the contractor would excavate around the lines and prep the trench during the night. Then when they were ready to lay pipe, LG&E would come in before sunrise and cut the line. The contractor would lay the line and LG&E would then reattach the line. This kept services going during important times for the business owners/residents.
  • As discussed above, the contractor is honoring other commitments made during last year. Traffic was shifted to accommodate gas service to the school. There is a 4” service line that runs to the school. During the school year it would have required coordination with the school and should any delay occur school would have been impacted. Thus work began on the pipeline once school was out to ensure minimal impact to the school as possible. Until the line was laid past the school, Hall returned to honoring other commitments with the intention that as soon as a crew was available they would return. The current expected date of beginning work is Monday, July 24.

2. What is the current schedule and completion dates?

The project is divided into four sections of work:

Section 1 - Stonegate Manor Drive to Bethany Lane (mile points 6.6 to 7.7)

Section 2 - Bethany Lane to Stonestreet Road (mile points 7.7 to 9.7)

Section 3 - Stonestreet Road to West Pages Lane (mile points 9.7 to 10.5)

Section 4 - West Pages Lane to Greenwood Road (mile points 10.5 to 11.7)

  • Because of the delays caused by the unknown utilities, KYTC has agreed that a time extension would be needed. The new completion date for the project is May 15, 2018.
  • Section 2 and 3 will both be finished by December 15, 2017 (weather permitting). However, should section 3 not be completed by that time, traffic will return to its normal pattern by December 15, 2017 and work will resume in Spring 2018 (Section 4 and any remaining section 3).
  • The completion date for the entire project would not change however from May 15, 2018.

3. Will the contractor be penalized for not finishing each section timely?

  • There is no language within the contract putting stipulations on each section’s progress, however, there are damages assessed if the project continues beyond the May 15, 2018 deadline.
  • Those damages will be assessed at $25,000 per day.

4. Will someone fix all the potholes that are currently on the road?

  • Yes, since this is actually a Louisville Metro maintained roadway, we have asked them to pothole patch as needed. They began this work on Thursday, July 13 and are continuing today. So far, they have filled 150 potholes.

5. Who can we contact if we have concerns?

Drive Clean Louisville Electric Vehicle Survey

E- car

The city’s Drive Clean Louisville Team is using the 2017 Sustainability Summit to launch an online survey of electric vehicle ownership and/or use in metropolitan Louisville. Drive Clean Louisville – a collaboration of the Mayor’s Office, the Metro Office of Sustainability, the Air Pollution Control District, and the Metro Office of Performance Improvement & Innovation — will use the data to help make Louisville an easier place to own and use an electric vehicle (EV) as the technology becomes more and more widespread. As part of the survey, respondents will also be asked to suggest spots where they’d like to see more electric-vehicle charging stations placed in the community

As use of electric vehicles continues to grow, Louisville needs to be ready for them, added APCD Environmental Coordinator Torend Collins, who helped develop the survey.

You can take the survey at the APCD’s website – https://louisvilleky.gov/government/air-pollution-control-district/drive-clean-louisville-electric-vehicle-survey
