Eastern Parkway Distribution Main

Louisville Water is working on a distribution main project on Eastern Parkway. A Louisville Water contractor will be installing a 12-inch distribution main between Crittenden Drive and I-65. The work will continue through the end of October. At least three lanes of traffic will remain open and the scope will be limited to normal working hours Monday through Friday.

Eastern Parkway 48-inch Transmission Main

Louisville Water’s phase 2 project to renovate the historic 48-inch transmission main in Eastern Parkway starts soon. Phase 2 runs from Eastern Parkway and Beargrass Creek (near Poplar Level) to Eastern Parkway and I-65. Crews are on sight disconnecting distribution main tie-ins and cutting trees. This will require a one-day closure of the intersection of Bradley and Eastern Parkway as well as one westbound lane of Eastern Parkway. The following week, crews will begin the construction of the pits that are used to slip line the existing main. This work will require the closure of two westbound lanes from Beargrass Creek to Poplar Level Rd.

Throughout the project, Louisville Water will update customers on the impact of the work. Communications channels include emails, Twitter, a dedicated web page at LouisvilleWater.com/EasternPkwyProject and frequent media updates.

Because of generous donors, 320 needy families received Thanksgiving dinners in 2016. This year, South East Associated Ministries (SEAM) will provide 350 dinners for neighborhood children and their families.

If you're looking for a unique idea for your group's holiday party, consider Holly and Ivy at the Louisville Nature Center. 

The center is in the city, yet on the edge of a 41-acre nature preserve and the perfect setting to create your choice of a swag, wreath or table decoration from live greenery. Nature Center instructors will be on hand to assist.

The cost of renting the space is $125 for four hours or less plus $20 per swag, wreath or table decoration. Hot coffee and cocoa will be served, and groups may bring their own food and beverages. Liquor is allowed if you use a licensed bartender and provide copies of the bartender's license prior to the event. The space comfortably holds 65 people. For more information, call 458-1328. 

The Cyril Allgeier Community Center offers youth, adult, and senior citizen programs in the Camp Taylor Neighborhood. 

Senior citizen programs include men’s 50+ basketball half court pick-up games, Pickle Ball (combines tennis, badminton, and table tennis) and walking club. 

For adults, the center offers aerobics, yoga, karate, and open gym for basketball. Youth activities include flag football and karate.

A one-stop center that connects people to the rising number of health care jobs in the Louisville area has been recognized for improving education and career opportunities in the healthcare field.

The Kentucky Health Career Center (KHCC) received the A.O. Sullivan Award for Excellence in Education at the 11th annual MediStar Awards, Tuesday evening at the Muhammad Ali Center. The annual award goes to organizations that use creative ways to enhance the level of knowledge, education and career opportunity in health care.

The KHCC, located at 746 S. Fifth Street, offers workshops, career assessments, career counseling, access to training, and job placement into the health care sector.

Created by KentuckianaWorks and funded primarily by federal Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act dollars, the center has placed more than 355 individuals into health care positions at an average wage of $17.45 since January 2016.

The center works closely with employers in the Health Careers Collaborative of Greater Louisville to tailor programs and provide weekly “Employer Spotlights,” where job seekers can interview directly for positions and learn more about the industry.

Staff provide individuals with career assessments that help identify the best jobs for them. Career counseling helps job seekers and current employees learn how to better position themselves for career success through additional training or by refining their resumes and sharpening interviewing skills.

The KHCC responds to specific needs in the health care workforce and partners with employers and community organizations on programs such as an Acute Care Nurse Aide training program, a Hispanic Job Fair for immigrants and refugees, free NCLEX workshops, a new EMT training and career fairs for graduates of the JCPS health career magnet programs.

Louisville Metro Develop Louisville’s Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD) is the recipient of a $2.9 million grant, through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), for reducing lead based paint hazards in homes in our community. This grant provides assistance to qualified homeowners identifying lead hazards within their property and the financial assistance to alleviate those hazards. This ensures all homes are lead-safe for all occupants.

Lead is a major health problem in areas with a high concentration of homes built before 1978 and has been found in homes in almost all areas of Metro Louisville. Even exposure to low levels of lead can permanently affect children. Lead poisoning can cause nervous system and kidney damage, learning disabilities, speech problems, behavioral problems, hearing damage, decreased muscle and bone growth, seizures and even death (with extended exposure to lead and  high  blood  lead levels). Lead also affects the health of adults. High lead levels in adults can cause high blood pressure, digestive problems, nerve disorders, muscle and joint pain, memory and concentration problems, fertility problems and harm to a fetus.

Lead enters the body through the mouth or nose; it is not absorbed through the skin. Lead poisoning is not easy to detect; the only way to know if you have lead poisoning is to get a blood test from your doctor. Many people mistake the symptoms of lead poisoning for other common illnesses, such as a cold or the flu, and sometimes no symptoms occur. Some of the early signs and symptoms of lead poisoning in children can be:

•  Persistent tiredness or hyperactivity
• Irritability
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss
• Reduced attention span
• Difficulty sleeping
• Constipation

Lead dust, which is invisible to the eye, can be found in window troughs and sills, on baseboards, doors and door jambs, floors, and bare spots in the yard. Today, the city’s Drive Clean Louisville Team is using the 2017 Sustainability Summit to launch an online survey of electric vehicle ownership and/or use in metropolitan Louisville. Drive Clean Louisville – a collaboration of the Mayor’s Office, the Metro Office of Sustainability, the Air Pollution Control District, and the Metro Office of Performance Improvement & Innovation — will use the data to help make Louisville an easier place to own and use an electric vehicle (EV) as the technology becomes more and more widespread. 

As part of the survey, respondents will be asked to suggest spots where they’d like to see more electric-vehicle charging stations placed in the community.

Louisville Metro residents not mulching autumn leaves into their lawns or putting them out in reusable or compostable containers for curbside collection will have the option to dispose of them at one of three drop-off sites beginning November 7.
Metro Public Works is offering a free leaf drop-off service through December 2, with the exception of November 23 and 24 Thanksgiving holiday. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.

The collected paint is reblended for sale in Habitat ReStore locations in Louisville, and money raised is reinvested in our community to create affordable home ownership opportunities.
