Next week and November 4-5 - Derby City Cup to impact traffic near Joe Creason Park

derby city cup logo

Due to the Derby City Cup international cyclocross race November 4 and 5, traffic and parking in and around Joe Creason Park is compromised.

The Derby City Cup will be held next Saturday and Sunday, but preparations for the event – which will see 900 athletes from across the world compete at the highest level of the sport – are already underway.

Residents and users of the park and its surroundings should be aware of the following:

  • The speed humps on Sheridan Avenue inside Joe Creason Park have been temporarily moved.
  • A new, one-way traffic pattern with some minor road shutdowns will be taking place while a flyover is being built for the race near the main entrance to Joe Creason Park. While construction is taking place and through the race days, traffic will be one-way only into the park off Trevilian Way and those coming into the park will only be able to exit from Sheridan Avenue onto Illinois Avenue. No one will be allowed to access the park off Illinois Avenue once construction begins on the fly over. These changes are temporary and traffic will revert back to normal after the race is over.
  • On race days, the upper walking path in Joe Creason Park by the Louisville Tennis Center, the Metro Parks and Recreation Administration Building, and down to Beargrass Creek will be closed to pedestrian traffic for safety reasons. The walking path along Newburg Road will be open.

The Derby City Cup is a test event for professional and amateur riders in advance of next year’s USA Cycling National Championships in December. Also, as part of this year’s event, the race is hosting the Pan American Games cycling portion along with a “B4 Festival” – featuring bands, beer, bikes and barbecue.

Admission is free for the general public.
