District 10's own Ryan Burch is heading to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, has gofundme fundraiser for living expenses

"I'm going to London! I'm ecstatic!" That's the latest from District 10 resident and actor Ryan Burch. After raising money through gofundme, Burch is now finalizing arrangements for a London apartment and preparing for classes at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.  Of the more than 5,000 people who auditioned from around the world this past year,  the St. X alumnus was one of two Americans in a class of 27 who were accepted into the two-year, year-round program. "She supports me with her whole heart and encourages me every day to do the impossible." September 16 - Birdwalk at the Louisville Nature Center

Join birder Rod Botkins for an informative bird walk at the LNC and the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve. The walk is free, but donations are always appreciated.  No signs ups are necessary for this family-friendly walk, but those 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Meet in the LNC lobby around 9:50. The Birdwalk starts at 10 and runs about an hour. Have fun, make friends, learn about birds and get some exercise.

The Jim King MUSCL Senior Wellness Center at Schnitzelburg is in St. Elizabeth Catholic Church at 1016 East Burnett Avenue.

Regular activities include aerobics, directed exercise, chair volleyball, Pinochle, bingo, crochet, and watercolor painting. The Center has gym equipment, a sewing room, and library, and they are still seeking the donation of a commercial grade treadmill. Save the date: 

September 23 for the annual Fall Yard Sale! The sale will take place in the St. Elizabeth parking lot from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include a bake sale in the cafeteria. Those wanting to rent a booth can call 634-3221. Honor Flight Bluegrass is an Honor Flight Network Chapter based in Louisville, and is recognized as a 501(C)(3), all-volunteer, non-profit organization created to honor America’s WWII, Korean, and Vietnam veterans for all their sacrifices.

We fly our heroes to Washington, DC and provide them with a first class, VIP, Police escorted tour to each of their respective memorials to honor their service, sacrifices and create the greatest memory of a lifetime.

The Kentucky Small Business Tax Credit – A reward for your success

Kentucky’s Cabinet for Economic Development offers a program that rewards growing small businesses. The eligibility guidelines for the income tax incentive are straightforward.

• For for-profit businesses of 50 or fewer full-time employees, including companies in the construction, manufacturing, retail, service and wholesale industries.
• Business must create at least one full-time position (average of 35 hours weekly) for 12 consecutive months with an average wage of $10.88 or more per hour.
• Business must invest a minimum of $5,000 in qualifying business equipment and/or technology.

Scam Alert: Equifax Data Breach

Equifax, one of the nation's three major credit-reporting agencies, recently announced a major data breach that could affect about 143 million American customers. 

Equifax has indicated that from mid-May through July of this year hackers gained access to customers' names, Social Security numbers, birthdates, addresses and some driver's license numbers. Credit card numbers of about 209,000 consumers, and personal information in credit file dispute documents for about 182,000 consumers were also accessed.

The Office of the Attorney General is asking Kentuckians who might be impacted by the breach to follow these steps to help protect against identity theft:

1. Check to see if your information was compromised. Verify if your personal information was impacted by visiting the Equifax website, equifaxsecurity2017.com. 
2. Sign up for the free credit monitoring service. Equifax is offering a free year of TrustedID Premier credit file monitoring and ID theft protection for all U.S. consumers, whether or not their information was impacted. To sign up for the protection service, visit equifaxsecurity2017.com, or call 866-447-7559, which is open every day, including weekends, from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Eastern time.
    
3. Follow the Identity Theft Toolkit. The Office of the Attorney General's online Identity Theft Toolkit provides systematic instructions on how to respond to possible identity theft. The toolkit includes information on how to place a credit report fraud alert, order credit reports and other helpful resources and contact information.
    
4. Report suspicious activity. Contact the Attorney General's data breach hotline, toll free at 855-813-6508 if you are a victim of a data breach or identity theft. 

City's HUD Entitlement Funds Applications Being Accepted

Louisville Metro Government Office of Resilience and Community Services (RCS) is now accepting applications from local non-profits for programs or activities funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for FY18 (June 1, 2017 - June 30, 2018). HUD-funded grants include the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA). These grants are administered locally by RCS and guided by a five-year strategic Consolidated Plan as well as the annual Action Plan. These additional funds are as a result of a reallocation of obligated funds and supplemental support from HUD. These funds are to be considered one-time, non-recurring grants for use during FY18. Resilience and Community Services’ FY18 – FY20 Goals are:

• Preventing homelessness for families and youth;
• End homelessness for families and youth;
• Serve homeless and low-income persons with HIV/AIDS

CDBG Public Service

CDBG Public Service grants will run from no later than Jan. 1, 2018 – June 30, 2018.  All funds must be expended by June 30, 2018.  For CDBG Public Service funds, RCS will give preference to applications that will provide legal assistance to resolve warrants for minor criminal charges pending against formerly homeless clients that are in case management. RCS intends to award one (1) grant of $14,190.  Funds may be used for activities which include, but are not limited to:

• Employment services (e.g. job training)
• Child care
• Health services
• Substance abuse services (e.g. counseling and treatment)
• Fair housing counseling
• Education programs
• Services for homeless persons

ESG

ESG grants require a 100% match to awarded funds. ESG grants will run from no later than Jan. 1, 2018 – June 30, 2018.  ESG supplemental grants may be used until June 30, 2019. RCS intends to award five (5) grants of $59,000 each. The number and amount of awards are subject to change if needed. For ESG funds, RCS will only consider applications for programs related to:

• Rapidly re-house homeless families and youth; and/or
• Preventing families and youth from becoming homeless.

HOPWA

HOPWA grants will run from no later than Jan. 1, 2018 – June 30, 2018.  All funds must be expended by June 30, 2018.  RCS intends to award two (2) grants of $55,000 each.  The number and amount of awards are subject to change if needed.  HOPWA funds per the annual Action Plan may be used for activities for individuals with HIV/AIDS which include, but are not limited to: 

• Supportive services;
• Rental assistance; and/or
• Short-term payments to prevent homelessness.

CDBG, ESG, and HOPWA sub-recipients will go through competitive funding processes. Any groups representing persons of low and moderate incomes may request technical assistance from Louisville Metro to help in their preparation of an application for funding. The method with which to request technical assistance shall be included as part of the request for funding applications. The funding decision-making process will also be outlined in the request for funding applications. Once sub-recipients and projects have been approved, Louisville Metro Government will review the list to determine if a technical correction of the information is needed or a substantial amendment is required.

A public meeting for questions will be held at 701 W. Ormsby Ave, 1st floor conference room (Edison Room) on Sept. 20 from 2 to 3 p.m. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, Sept. 29 by 5 p.m.  To gain access to the application, visit https://louisvilleky.wufoo.com/forms/fy-2018-additional-hud-funding/.

Call for proposals for Imagine Greater Louisville 2020 plan

Metro Louisville, the Louisville Metro Council and the Fund for the Arts announce a call for proposals to activate strategies and actions identified within the Imagine Greater Louisville 2020 plan.  Individuals, groups, organizations, and partnerships are encouraged to submit creative proposals addressing how arts and culture can help the region grow, compete, thrive, and solve community problems.  Proposals of all sizes from all areas of the Metro representing the rich diversity of the community are encouraged.  Imagine Greater Louisville 2020 was introduced in early 2017 as the arts and cultural plan for the region. Arts and culture have the power to transform, to help advance a more competitive, economically stronger, more educated, creative, and compassionate Greater Louisville. This plan provides a shared vision for the role arts, culture and creativity can play in this stronger future. It's not a secret - Homeowner Repair Program here to help eligible homeowners

Develop Louisville - Office of Housing and Community Development's Homeowner Repair Program may not be well known, but it's here to help. 

While some programs are available only to homeowners in the Russell, Shawnee or Portland neighborhoods. several are are accessible to eligible homeowners throughout Louisville Metro, including the Emergency Repair Program. Household must be at or below 80 percent AMI (Area Median Income) to be eligible to receive up to $5,000 toward emergency repair costs. Eligible costs include replacement or repair of major interior mechanical systems such as furnaces and water heaters and exterior health and safety issues such as gas and water line leaks and electrical wiring. Homeowners must continue to reside in the home as the owner occupant for a minimum of one year after work has been completed.

September 15 - Smoketown Getdown for Democracy

September 16 - Family Kite Festival at Riverside - The Farnsley-Moreman Landing

The sight of colorful kites flying through the air will punctuate a wonderful family event hosted at Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 16.

The first-ever “Family Kite Festival” will take place on the grounds of the historic home and farm, located in southwest Louisville at 7410 Moorman Road. Admission to the Kite Festival is free, although concessions will be offered for sale.

Activities include performances from the Chicago Kite Team and Aloft Stationary Kites; stilt walkers; bubble making, kite making and balsa wood airplane making stations; and games and complimentary tours (donations accepted) of the Farnsley-Moremen House. In addition, the LMPD display helicopter will also be at the festival for kids to enjoy. 

September 16 - Tails on Trails

Join us for the "Tails on Trails" Adopt-a-Dog hike series as we aim to help adoptable dogs find a forever home. Each hike will be lead by our experienced volunteers along with Louisville Metro Animal Services staff and some adoptable dogs, and include an introduction to the Jefferson Memorial Forest and Metro Parks Natural Areas, then Louisville Metro Animal Services Staff.  The hike will be at Jefferson Memorial Forest's Paul Yost Recreation Area September 16 starting at 6 p.m.

Saturday, September 16: Women Veterans Open House from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Robley Rex Veterans Medical Center, 800 Zorn Avenue, west entrance. This event is free and no registration is required. Event will have VA and community resources, women’s health speakers, relaxation services, music, food and door prizes.

Saturday, September 16: First Annual Homebrew Fair from noon to 3 p.m. at Waterfront Botanical Gardens Site, 1410 Frankfort Avenue. Saturday, September 16: The National Jug Band Jubilee from noon to 11 p.m. at the Brown-Forman Amphitheater on River Road in Waterfront Park. The National Jug Band Jubilee is a free, family friendly festival that celebrates the history of jug band music in Louisville. Created in 2014, the Brightside Bash is a fun twist on a traditional gala fundraiser. The Bash features local bands, a silent auction, raffles, food, and fun! Brightside Bash 2017 will be held on Thursday, September 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Copper & Kings Distillery  at 1121 E. September 21 - LMPD Youth Chat

Youth Chat with LMPD is a series of public open-dialogue discussions that allow youth 25 and under to hear from - and talk with - local law enforcement officials to establish better relationships and mutual understanding. Learn about the variety of things that Louisville Metro police officers do. Each session will be co-moderated by local youth.

Everyone is invited to come out to be a part of this unique opportunity, and bring their friends. 

The September Youth Chat will be September 21 at the Beechmont Community Center at 205 West Wellington Avenue with the Fourth Division Crime Scene Unit. 

September 23 - The Big C Forum on Cancer Prevention and Care

The Big C: Care, Cancer, Community, Cure forum on Cancer Prevention and Care will be September 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. at St. Stephen Church Family Life Center at 1508 W. Kentucky Street. 

Free services include blood pressure readings, kidney screenings, vision screenings, diabetes screenings, and flu shots (w/insurance card). Learn about endometrial cancer, the importance of having a relationship with your doctor, information on smoking and more. 

September 24 - Locust Grove Antiques Market

The Locust Grove Antiques Market, in its 38th year, will be at the historic home on Blankenbaker Lane Sunday, September 24 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $8.

September 26 and October 24 - Heroin Hurts classes

Two more Heroin Hurts classes have been announced: 

• September 26, 7 p.m., at the South Central Regional Library, 964-3515
• October 24, 6 p.m., at the St. Matthews Library, 574-1771

Classes are taught by a certified drug and alcohol abuse counselor from the Office of Addiction Services. The classes are free and open to the public but registration is required. Please call the library branches to reserve a spot.

October 12 - Catch the world's leading expert in outsmarting con artists

AARP Kentucky will be hosting An Evening with Mr. Frank Abagnale on October 12, as part of our fraud awareness and prevention activities. If you are unfamiliar with Mr. Abagnale, the movie Catch Me If You Can was based on his life. He is an American security consultant known for his history as a former conman who specialized in impersonation and forgery when he was between the ages of 15 and 21. The event will be at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts Bomhard Theater at 501 W. How to file a damage claim with MSD

From MSD: Property Owners may file damage claims by calling MSD Customer Relations at 587-0603. They will need to reference the Camp Taylor Sewer Project, provide their name, address, phone number, and a brief description of their damage claim. 

MSD will then forward the information to our contractor for them to investigate and render a decision on the claim in writing to the property owner. Additional information may be required such as receipts or photos as applicable. If the contractor denies responsibility for the claim, the property owner may appeal the decision by contacting MSD Customer Relations again and request that the claim be evaluated by MSD.

MSD and our field representatives will monitor and track the claim progression to make sure the contractor is responsive.

West Nile-infected mosquitos in Louisville Metro - take precautions

The Department of Public Health and Wellness has found West Nile-infected mosquitoes in surveillance traps in six Louisville ZIP Code areas: 40204, 40205, 40206, 40208, 40212 and 40214.  Wear insect repellant if you're going outside at dusk and at dawn, and remove all standing water around the home.

Discounted Recycle Carts still available for $25 for District 10 residents - now in two sizes

The discounted recycle cart program has been re-instituted by Councilman Mulvihill and now offers two sizes: the 95-gallon carts and smaller 64 gallon carts.  The photos at left show the sizes (64 gallon on the left).

The carts normally cost $50, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $25. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form. The reduced cost recycle carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are depleted. This offer is available to urban service district residents.

Use the latex paint recycling program

Louisville Metro Solid Waste and Habitat for Humanity's ReStore accept partial cans of residential latex paint for recycling. The collected paint is reblended for sale in Habitat ReStore locations in Louisville.  The money raised from the sale of recycled latex paint is reinvested in our community to create affordable home ownership opportunities.  Note: paint must be latex only, and in usable condition. If the paint can is rusted shut, or if it doesn’t have a label, it will be declined. Drop off latex paint during business hours at the following locations:  Louisville Metro Staffed Recycling Centers, open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at: 595 Hubbards Lane, 7219 Dixie Highway and 7201 Outer Loop.  Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations at 2777 S. Floyd Street, 4044 Taylorsville Road, and 1631 Rowan Street.
