"Taste of South Louisville" A Big Success

This annual event for South Louisville Community Ministries, hosted by Churchill Downs, raised over $50,000 and drew over 800 people.

Monday September 4th Labor Day Holiday

Metro Services Closed

The District 21 Council Office will be Closed in observance of the Labor Day Holiday Monday September 4.

There will be no residential garbage, junk, recycling or yard waste collection within the Louisville Metro Urban Services District on Monday September 4.  Collection throughout the remaining week will be delayed by one day because of the holiday.

Residents who rely on private haulers for garbage, recycling and yard waste collection should consult those haulers about holiday collection schedules.

Also, Jefferson County staffed recycling, hazardous waste and waste reduction facilities will be closed on Saturday September 2 in recognition of the holiday and closed on Monday as usual.


15th Annual WorldFest Labor Day Weekend Sept. 1 - 4

WorldFest, one of the region’s largest international festivals, will take place Labor Day weekend for its 15th year, with four days of international food, music, dance and culture starting September 1 at the downtown Belvedere.

Cultures ranging from African drumming to reggae to Indian, Celtic, Arabic, Latin, Caribbean music and more  than 100 vendors  with 30-plus food vendors serving a global sampling of cuisine and culture.


  • The Global Village – A kaleidoscope of Louisville’s culture, where you can interact with representatives of more than 20 nations. All nine of Louisville’s Sister Cities will be represented again this year.
  • The WorldFest Children’s Area – Will feature activities from WKU’s Confucius Institute, as well as Home Depot.
  • Parade of Cultures – Will showcase the multicultural diversity of our unique city.
  • Chinese Cultural Experience – Mobile Unit in front of The Kentucky Center.


The festival includes a naturalization ceremony at 1 p.m. Friday, where more than 300 immigrants will become full U.S. citizens and a colorful Parade of Cultures at noon on Saturday.

Monday Labor Day Sept. 4 Hike, Bike & Paddle

The Subway Fresh Fit Hike Bike & Paddle is a twice annual event held every Memorial & Labor Day.  Thousands of participants flock to Waterfront Park to enjoy a morning full of fun. Bring the entire family for this free, healthy hometown event. Various fitness demonstrations start the day including yoga, tai chi and zumba. There are numerous vendor booths available for information and giveaways.  After all of that, take your pick from a 5k hike, 9.5-mile bike ride or a paddle on the Ohio River. This event is not a race. It is open to participants of all levels and we encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the festivities!  

Paddlers 

will launch their canoes or kayaks at the ramp located at the Harbor Lawn of Waterfront Park to begin their adventurous five-mile course at 10 a.m., taking their canoes and kayaks through the McAlpine Locks and Dam to the Jaycees Boat Ramp in New Albany. Participants .  Paddle participants must wear a life jacket and carry a noise making device. After the event, TARC will offer a shuttle service for paddlers to retrieve their vehicles at the launch site.

Cyclists

a 9.5-mile route from Waterfront Park and west through the Portland Stroll District and  back to Waterfront Park. Turnoffs will provide cycling routes as short as two miles.

Hiking 

Wheelchair-accessible, as walkers go west along the waterfront, portions of the Riverwalk and wharf to 10th Street and back. Walkers can bring their dogs on the hike, but must keep them on a leash and pick up waste, as required by law.

  • More than 50 vendors and information booths will open at 8:30 a.m. at Waterfront Park.  
  • Again, patrons will have the opportunity to try their hand at stand-up paddle boarding until 1 p.m.
  • Yoga, Tai Chi and Zumba demonstrations will be offered, along with group participation. 
  • Beginning at 8:30 a.m. there will be 3,000 free T-shirts for those who arrive early and complete a brief survey. 
  • The Brain Injury Association will distribute 500 helmets to riders who don’t have one. 
  • Neil Huffman Subaru will be giving away a free bicycle and kayak at the event.  Various water stations along the routes, as part of Louisville Water’s Pure Tap To Go.

          IMAGINE Greater Louisville 2020 is providing a competitive call for proposal process, made possible by Metro Louisville and the Louisville Metro Council, to implement the vision and priorities laid out in the Imagine 2020 plan. 

          This process will distribute $250,000 in grants with a portion of these dollars allocated to fund small grants (less than $5,000) and the remaining funds supporting larger projects.

              This month our Youth Chat series with LMPD will take place at the Beechmont Community Center on Thursday September 21, 2017 to engage our young people in public discussion. Youth 25 & under can chat with local law enforcement officials from the 4th Division CSU unit to establish better relationships and a mutual understanding on issues and topics within the community. Learn more about what our officers do and ask them a variety of questions about their job duties as a Louisville Metro Police Officer. Meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

                The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) provides income eligible seniors with $28 in checks per season to purchase fresh, unprocessed, locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs at nine area approved farmers markets.                 Louisville has a new Farmers Market Association (LFMA).  The purpose of the new association is to support farmers markets, farmers and local food producers to promote access to a healthy and sustainable food system. LFMA does this by providing assistance such as marketing, financial advice, vendor and volunteer recruitment to increase the capacity of farmers markets.  It also helps to facilitate better access to healthy fruits and vegetables for everyone by helping the markets support SNAP (food stamps) participants through the Double Dollars Program and Free EBT Equipment and seniors through the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program

                Cat Caretakers living in the following Jefferson County zip codes 40208, 40209, 40213, 40214, 40215, 40216, 40217, 40219, 40258 and 40272 are eligible  for spay/neuter services for unowned community cats,  They will be vaccinated, spayed/neutered, treated for flea and ear-mite medicine, given a great vet visit, ear-tipped (the universal symbol of a neutered cat) and returned.
