Old Louisville Fugitive Slaves' Tale Subject of Award-Winning Poet

Poet, scholar and activist, Dr. Estella Conwill Majozo (University of Louisville; Hunter College; Kentucky State University and Simmons College of Kentucky) will premiere The Freedom Clothes Project July 1 & July 2 at the Clifton Center, 2117 Payne Street in Louisville, KY.  Events begin at 6:00 p.m. both days with an inaugural VIP Exclusive Reception and Artifacts Exhibition, $60; $20; $15; $10.  Special rates and group discounts available.  The artifacts exhibit will be open to the public July 5-August 5, $5.00; $3.00. 

This two-day public arts event is a culmination from 10+ years of scholarship and artistic acumen.  As an inaugural premiere, The Freedom Clothes Project introduces Majozo's new historical novel of fiction--Freedom Clothes:  The Amazing Tale of Thornton and Lucie Blackburn (Africa Tree Press, Clifton, N.J.).

Louisville one of five communities to Take on Youth Homelessness

Louisville, KY (May 30, 2017) - Building on the success of three cities that made remarkable progress last Fall, The Coalition for the Homeless is proud to announce that Louisville, Kentucky was selected by Rapid Results Institute (RRI), A Way Home America, and HomeBase as one of five cities to launch a 100-Day Challenge to accelerate efforts to end youth homelessness. The other cities selected were Baltimore (MD), Columbus (OH), Hennepin County (MN), and Palm Beach County (FL). This work is made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and private philanthropic partners. Rapid Results Institute (RRI) and HomeBase will offer technical support to each a community as they strive to meet their goals. 

A 100-Day Challenge is a project where a community decides together on an incredibly ambitious goal: to end experiences of homelessness for a large number of young people in their community. With just 100 days to meet their goal, everyone from community leaders down to front-line workers are invited to do their work differently, change systems and innovate. In order to make great strides, communities must take on great challenges. The limited timeframe, the high-profile effort, and the intensive support from RRI results in communities progressing on three major tasks: problem solving, innovation, and partnership-building. 

The Coalition for the Homeless in Louisville began working to understand youth homelessness in 2013, including two studies on the needs of youth and the creation of a committee called the Coalition Supporting Young Adults (CSYA), now a separate partner organization. The CSYA undertook community mapping to understand existing resources, including youth shelter; drop in centers; and education, employment and housing opportunities available for homeless youth. This mapping process enabled CSYA and the community to identify gaps and potential opportunities to re-allocate existing resources. The collaborative work of CSYA has already supported the development of new resources including two new drop-in centers, a community-wide plan to reengage out of school youth and a professional development program to train a cohort of "connectors" who can quickly link homeless and disconnected youth. In addition to CSYA, a Youth Advisory Board, an Education/Employment Collaborative, and a Homeless Youth Committee consisting of 41 community leaders have also all been formed. These entities will be crucial as Louisville continues to address youth homelessness during the 100-Day Challenge.

"Our plan and implementation must not only address the housing needs of approximately 868 youth, but also create preventive solutions to keep the large number of precariously housed youth counted by JCPS not only out of the shelters, but in a safe setting that allows them to thrive," says Natalie Harris, Executive Director of the Coalition for the Homeless in Louisville. "One of our main focuses will be in creating transitional and rapid rehousing programs integrated with education and employment."

By meeting and then exceeding their goals, Austin, Cleveland, and Los Angeles set the bar Fall 2016: together, they housed nearly 450 young people in just 100 days. These three communities were the first round of 100-Day Challenges on youth homelessness.

Burglaries:

• 732 Zane – vacant and being renovated, a door and a window were damaged
• 327 W Oak (Oak Food Mart) – a window was broken, but the security bars prevented anything from being taken

Auto Thefts:

• 1361 S Floyd – two mopeds were taken by unknown means
• S 4th & W St Catherine – key left with the vehicle
• S 2nd & W Magnolia – stolen by unknown means

Robberies:

• Pindell & Texas – robbed victim of property: (1) WM, 5’8”, dark hair, beard, med build; (2) WM, 5’10”, dirty blond hair
• E Oak & S Preston (Omar’s) – the victim was assaulted ,and money and a cell phone were taken, BM, brown shirt, blue jeans, white hat, 5’8”, 210lbs

• 8 Eutropia Ct – a moped was taken by unknown means
• 1830 S 3rd – the car has an malfunctioning ignition, and it can be started without a key

• 700 Central (CHD, Gate 17) – the victim was robbed at gunpoint, BM, “thick” build, 5’3”-5’7”, gray hoodie, baggy jeans, short hair, armed with a chrome handgun

Burglaries:

• 918 Longfield – a shed door was pried open, and two lawn mowers were taken
• 2836 Taylor – a vacant home, the suspect is a relative of the victim
• 613 M St – the landlord is the suspect

Auto Thefts:

• 3181 S 2nd (Planet Fitness) – the vehicle’s key was left in an unlocked gym locker, possible suspect: WM, 6’0”, 260 lbs, neck tattoo
• 513 M St – a relative obtained the vehicle’s key and stole the car

Aggravated Assaults:

·         We have had 5 Aggravated Assaults in the division so far this week. These assaults occurred near the following locations:

• 100 block of S 37th St
• Unknown suspect(s) fired multiple shots into the victims residence.
• 300 block of N 43RD ST
• Unknown suspect(s) fired multiple shots into the victim’s vehicle which was occupied 3 times.
• 2700 block of Isaac Place
• The victim was shot at this location and transported to University Hospital where he later succumbed to his wounds (The Homicide Unit is investigating).
• 1800 block of BURWELL AVE
• An arrest was made in this domestic related incident which involved a known suspect pointing a handgun at this victim.
• 1200 block of BRASHEAR DR
• The victim was shot in the abdomen and transported to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries (The Homicide Unit is investigating).

Burglaries:

·         We have had 10 Burglaries in the division so far this week. These burglaries occurred near the following locations:

• 4400 block of ELLIOTT AVE
• The suspects are known in this incident
• 100 block of BOSTON CT
• 3800 block of GARLAND AVE

• 2 individuals were arrested in this incident

Motor Vehicle Theft:

·         We have had 3 stolen autos in the division this week. The keys to the cars were taken by known suspects in 2/3 incidents and the car was left running and unattended in the third. These motor vehicle thefts occurred near the following locations:

• S 13TH ST / W OAK ST
• 1500 block of S 12TH ST
• 1500 block of DIXIE HWY

Theft from Autos:

·         There have been 3 theft from autos this week in the division. There were no signs of forced entry in 2 of the thefts and 1 of the vehicles was left unlocked. The thefts occurred near the following locations:

• 1300 block of S 28TH ST
• 1700 block of CYPRESS ST
• 4300 block of MAE AVE

Robberies:

·         There have been 2 street robberies in the division this week which have occurred near the following locations:

• 1700 block of GARLAND AVE
• In this robbery the victim was attempting to trade his gaming system for another gaming system with a person he communicated with online. When he arrived at the location he was met by 3 subjects one of which was armed with a handgun. These subjects then stole his property. Please advise your constituents to use caution when making these kinds of trades or transactions with people they do not know. To make these kinds of transactions safer, encourage them to meet in a public place with lots of people and or surveillance. I am also open to having people meet in the 2nd Division parking lot to increase their personal safety and to discourage anyone who would commit such a crime.

• The victim was robbed by 2 suspects that displayed a handgun and demanded his money.
