Welcome: It’s a New World

Welcome to The New Edition of District 8 eNews.  I use music and pop culture references to make my point a lot of times but this is a decidedly Candy Girl-free zone, so sorry to disappoint anyone.  With the budget continuing to dominate discussions in City Hall, District 8 streets projects stuck in purgatory and my strategic plan shtick a bit old hat by now, I thought I’d just give you some good, old-fashioned “here’s the latest” to get things started.

Slowly but surely District 8 grassroots democracy is rounding into form.  Next Monday, June 12, we meet to formally organize the new Bowman Neighborhood Association.  (See the District 8 Events Calendar for more information).  Bowman will be the penultimate D-8 neighborhood to get organized.  Then, last but not least, we’ll begin work in the Hawthorne area.  Once the Hawthorne Neighborhood Association is up and running, 100% of District 8 residents will have a neighborhood association or home rule city council and mayor available to provide them another, hyperlocal level of representation vis-à-vis my office and the rest of Metro Government.  This effort will culminate in the first meeting of the District 8 Advisory Board, July 27.  You’ll hear more about this neighborhood leadership network and forum, including its purpose and powers, in the weeks to come.

It is my distinct pleasure to introduce the newest member of the District 8 Office to you.  I am elated to welcome Aaron Vance to be my intern for the summer.  Aaron is the current Student Body President at the University of Louisville, a McConnell Scholar, Class of 2017 and a rising 1L at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law.  Aaron is a fine young man, and we’re incredibly lucky to have him for the next two months.  For his first project, Aaron is taking the lead on the Bardstown Road peak period parking problem we previously discussed; and if that goes well, we’re going to put him in charge of Canada, Mexico, China and peace in the Middle East.

The new Eight More Miles: District 8 Podcast is out, featuring District 8 resident – and Director of Public Works – Vanessa Burns.  You should listen to it the next time you’re trying to kill forty-three minutes and twenty-four seconds (43:24)!  The pod is part of my effort to build interest in civic engagement and make city business more accessible and interesting, and it is one of my favorite parts of the job.

There is more to reveal below, including new sidewalk repair figures, new development philosophies and new public safety measures.  It’s a new world.
