Metro Louisville will host a second public meeting regarding Lexington Road at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 18 at the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, 2115 Lexington Road.

The Lexington Road project is to improve safety along the corridor while maintaining functionality. It is an implementation of the Lexington Road Corridor Transportation Plan which involved community engagement and was completed in 2015
- The scope of the project is Lexington Rd through the intersections of Payne St and Grinstead Dr
- It is in coordination with a repaving of the roadway slated for later this year
- Travel lanes will be reduced from 4 to 2 in order to calm traffic (speed reductions, lane changing, passing, etc.)
- Left turn bay on eastbound Lexington Rd to northbound Grinstead Dr (to I-64) will be extended to accommodate rush hour congestion
- Dedicated left turn lanes will be introduced at Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana and The Woods at Lexington Road
- New dedicated left turn lanes from Lexington Rd to Payne St
- Remaining right of way will be dedicated to painted medians and bike facilities
- Creates a safer environment for all users
- Average daily traffic (ADT) count is 10,800 but appears to be trending downwards due to Ohio River Bridges Project completion
- Typical 4 to 2 roadway reconfigurations can accommodate up to 15,000 (ADT)
- Improvements in safety and functionality are projected at the intersections of Payne of Grinstead
- Lexington Rd is very similar in design to Grinstead Dr which underwent a similar treatment (2012) and has shown a 67% reduction in collisions
- The May 18 meeting is an opportunity to see and discuss the design
- Metro has funding to study Lexington Rd from Payne St to Baxter Ave for additional improvements in the future

The Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA) will host the 9th Annual Buy Local Fair on Sunday, May 21st from 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Louisville Water Tower Park, 3005 River Road. Presented by Louisville Water Company, admission to the Buy Local Fair is free and parking is $5 per vehicle, or free for bicycle parking.
The fair will include more than 200 booths from a variety of local businesses, artists and craftspeople, community organizations, and farmers, as well as live music, The Trend Appliances cooking competition, food and drink vendors, ValuMarket craft beer tent, Cox's Back Porch area for the grownups and a children's area as well.
For the first time, the fair will also feature a "Drink Local Craft Cocktail Competition," where local mixologists will create unique cocktails, and attendees will be able to vote for their favorite. The winning mixologist and brand will receive a one year's membership to LIBA.
The mission of the Buy Local Fair is to provide a venue that fosters cooperation, cross-pollination and strength in numbers for locally-owned, independent entities. By bringing together customers of various businesses, farms, craftspeople and bands unique to the Louisville-area, we expose a variety of endeavors to new audiences and increase business for all.

The Division of Community Forestry has teamed up with the non-profit organization Trees Louisville to offer Jefferson County residents up to 40% off the cost of a shade tree.
Eligibility requirement are as follows:
- Tree must be considered a shade tree and selected from Division’s Master Tree List
- Program open to Jefferson County, KY residents only
- Max 3 submissions per household
- Tree must measure at least 1inch in diameter at a point 6 inches above soil line
- Tree must be purchased and planted between October 2016 – May 31, 2017
- Rebates are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis while funds are available
- Rebate is only eligible for purchase price of tree (i.e. excludes tax, planting or delivery fees, etc.).

There will be a public meeting to present neighbors with a Conditional Use Permit request to allow off-street parking to be located in the R-5 zoning district for Willis-Klein Showrooms located at 284, 284 R and 286 Ridgeway Avenue and 4041 Westport Road in St. Matthews.
A plan for pre-application review has been filed with the Division of Planning and Design Services (DPDS) that is assigned case number 17CUP1032 and case manager Jon Crumbie (jon.crumbie@louisvilleky.gov). The applicant would like to show and explain this plan to neighbors to obtain thoughts, issues and perhaps even concerns you may have.
In that regard, a meeting will be held on Monday, May 22nd at 7:00 p.m. at the Beargrass Christian Church located at 4100 Shelbyville Road in the Fellowship Hall.

Plan to attend the third and final public meeting focusing on the Ohio River Valley Northeast Segment of the Louisville Loop, connecting the city of Prospect and the Big Four Bridge. D9 Resident Martha Elson recently retired from a long career at the Courier-Journal, where she specialized in preservation and history feature articles.
To celebrate her dedicated efforts on behalf of the preservation and historical communities, the Louisville Historical League is hosting a reception in her honor. The tribute is Saturday, May 20, at 11 am at the Peterson Dumesnil House, 301 S. Peterson.
The League invites all of Martha’s many friends to attend!

Councilman Brandon Coan, Councilwoman Barbara Sexton Smith and I are sponsoring a Neighborhood Watch Workshop and Drug Toss on Wednesday, May 24th at 6:00pm at the Douglas Community Center Gym, located at 2305 Douglas Blvd in District 8.
This workshop is a focused effort to increase the number of Neighborhood Watch Programs in both districts. The event will teach individuals how to organize effective block watches and mobilize neighborhoods to work with police to keep everyone safe. Residents and business owners will get a chance to meet some of the officers who patrol their area while they train on how to form a good neighborhood watch program.
The workshop will also provide an opportunity for citizens to drop off old and unneeded prescription drugs to LMPD for safe disposal.

Develop Louisville staff has been engaging with the public on an update to the Comprehensive Plan. Some methods of engagement have included work groups, an Advisory Committee, outreach to local municipalities with zoning authority and appearing before various bodies and organizations, including Metro Council’s Committee of the Whole.
In the coming weeks, Develop Louisville will be holding seven open house forums to provide the public will an opportunity to view and to comment on the work done so far.

The forums will allow for additional input on the work completed to date (draft goals and objectives) and will help Develop Louisville develop policies. These meetings will be open house style with a short introductory presentation. At these forums, the planners are especially interested in engaging with citizens who have not yet participated in the Comprehensive Plan update process. Attend one of the meetings and participate in planning Louisville’s future!

A few weeks ago Metro Parks planted 25 new trees in Champions Park. All the trees were planted around the parking lot and along the fence of the dog park. Several tree species were planted, including nine Dawn Redwoods, four American Hornbeams, three Eastern Hophornbeams and nine Pecan trees. Thank you Metro Parks!

Saturday, May 20: Clifton Walking Tour from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Join the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) for a walking tour of the Clifton neighborhood, starting at the historic 1883 building on the grounds of the American Printing House for the Blind. On the two-hour walking tour, you'll find evidence of the evolution of the area from a sparsely populated rural community in 1830 to a densely settled urban Louisville neighborhood. Saturday, May 20: 10th Anniversary of the Mighty Kindness Hoot from Noon - 7:00 p.m. at Waterfront Park's Brown Forman Amphitheater. The purpose is to strentghen those who are promoting healing, community service, peace and social justice, local farms and markets. You can feel good and do good at the Massage-a-thon helping St.Joseph's Children Home and experience various forms of alternative healing. A wide diversity of local artisans who are crafting from recycled and earth-friendly materials will be selling their wares. A Free School with 2 tents of Workshops will be open to the public to engage and learn about topics like "Reverse an Opiate Overdose with Naloxone/Narcan Training," "Grassroots Political Activism," "Bystander Training for Racial Justice," "Looking Beyond Borders" refugee experience and more all free to the public. There will also be a "Feed & Need" drive for the Homeless Community & a huge trailer that works as a shower & laundry facility in an entire area dedicated to support and education about our neighbors living without a home.
Sunday, May 21: 9th Annual Buy Local First Fair at Louisville Water Tower Park, 3005 River Road, from Noon - 6:00 p.m. The fair will host a variety of local businesses, musicians, artists and craftspeople, chefs, community organizers and farmers. All locally-owned independent businesses and individuals are encouraged to participate as vendors. Admission is free, $5 per car to park. Bicycles are free to park. Sorry, pets are not allowed on the Louisville Water Tower Park property.
