Kentucky Shakespeare is proud to announce the fourth annual Shakespeare in the Parks tour. Their 6-actor, 85-minute production of Julius Caesar will be in District 9 on Saturday, May 13 at 6:00 p.m. at Story Avenue Park, 1519 Story Avenue. The rain space will be Crescent Hill Methodist Church.

Congratulations to D9 resident Adam Ruschival, recipient of the 2017 Paul J. Langan Distinguished Service Award from the Kentucky School for the Blind. Adam is a 1965 graduate of KSB and KSB Alumni Association President. He is also an active volunteer whose numerous activities relating to improving services and provisions for individuals who are blind or visually impaired extend far beyond the boundaries of the school. He has been especially active in the Clifton neighborhood where he has been a strong voice in issues relating to safe pedestrian travel and access to services and information.
Adam’s father, Adam Ruschival, Sr., received the same award in 1996 and his wife Carla was bestowed the honor in 2014.
The Langan award was a highlight of an inspiring 175th Anniversary Celebration at the Kentucky School for the Blind on May 9. More information about KSB’s rich history is in this Courier-Journal article.

Every week we look at crime trends in D9, especially burglaries, thefts from autos and auto thefts. The best advice, every week, is to always lock your doors, never leave your vehicle running while unattended and never leave valuable items visible in your vehicle, even if it is locked.
Last week there was an uptick in the number of thefts from vehicles, which led LMPD’s Fifth Division to put out this special notice about purses:
“We would like to point out as usual the most common item taken from most of these vehicles were purses. It appears all these purses were left in the passenger compartment of the vehicle. We would recommend not leaving purses in vehicles when going out at night. If you do need to secure your purse in a vehicle the trunk is the best place to put it. Make sure you put it in the trunk before your arrive at your destination. That way if a suspect is casing the lot he will not see you place it in the trunk. Most theft from vehicles with purses are a quick smash of the window and a grab of the purse that was left in plain sight. “

Metro Public Works shares a few reminders about your trash in the Urban Services District.Following a few simple rules will help keep Louisville clean.
- Garbage must be set at the curb or the alley no later than 6 AM on collection day, but no earlier than 4 PM the day before collection day.
- Carts must be placed at the edge of the curb or alley at least three feet from other carts, buildings or objects.
- All garbage carts must be removed from the street or alley no later than 4 PM the day after collection.
- Maximum cart weight load is 200 pounds.
- Lid of cart must be kept closed.

Metro Louisville will host a second public meeting regarding Lexington Road at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 18 at the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, 2115 Lexington Road.

The Lexington Road project is to improve safety along the corridor while maintaining functionality. It is an implementation of the Lexington Road Corridor Transportation Plan which involved community engagement and was completed in 2015
- The scope of the project is Lexington Rd through the intersections of Payne St and Grinstead Dr
- It is in coordination with a repaving of the roadway slated for later this year
- Travel lanes will be reduced from 4 to 2 in order to calm traffic (speed reductions, lane changing, passing, etc.)
- Left turn bay on eastbound Lexington Rd to northbound Grinstead Dr (to I-64) will be extended to accommodate rush hour congestion
- Dedicated left turn lanes will be introduced at Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana and The Woods at Lexington Road
- New dedicated left turn lanes from Lexington Rd to Payne St
- Remaining right of way will be dedicated to painted medians and bike facilities
- Creates a safer environment for all users
- Average daily traffic (ADT) count is 10,800 but appears to be trending downwards due to Ohio River Bridges Project completion
- Typical 4 to 2 roadway reconfigurations can accommodate up to 15,000 (ADT)
- Improvements in safety and functionality are projected at the intersections of Payne of Grinstead
- Lexington Rd is very similar in design to Grinstead Dr which underwent a similar treatment (2012) and has shown a 67% reduction in collisions
- The May 18 meeting is an opportunity to see and discuss the design
- Metro has funding to study Lexington Rd from Payne St to Baxter Ave for additional improvements in the future

The Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA) will host the 9th Annual Buy Local Fair on Sunday, May 21st from 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Louisville Water Tower Park, 3005 River Road. Presented by Louisville Water Company, admission to the Buy Local Fair is free and parking is $5 per vehicle, or free for bicycle parking.
The fair will include more than 200 booths from a variety of local businesses, artists and craftspeople, community organizations, and farmers, as well as live music, The Trend Appliances cooking competition, food and drink vendors, ValuMarket craft beer tent, Cox's Back Porch area for the grownups and a children's area as well.
For the first time, the fair will also feature a "Drink Local Craft Cocktail Competition," where local mixologists will create unique cocktails, and attendees will be able to vote for their favorite. The winning mixologist and brand will receive a one year's membership to LIBA.
The mission of the Buy Local Fair is to provide a venue that fosters cooperation, cross-pollination and strength in numbers for locally-owned, independent entities. By bringing together customers of various businesses, farms, craftspeople and bands unique to the Louisville-area, we expose a variety of endeavors to new audiences and increase business for all.
