Welcome: New Year’s Eve

The 2017-2018 budget season is upon us, and it is like Christmas in July for government watchdogs and policy wonks across the city (of which I consider myself to be a proud member of both).  Ho!  Ho!  Ho! Happy New Fiscal Year!

In all seriousness, this is a special time we set aside to reflect on priorities set and spending decisions past, to measure the results of our actions, to learn from our mistakes and to resolve to change those things that aren’t working to improve our community.

It is a time to ask hard questions, yes.  More importantly, it is a time to listen carefully to tough answers because the way we think things ought to be and the way they really are sometimes are further apart than we realize, and it is critical to understand that.

Perhaps the sentiment I’m trying to express here is best illustrated by this unforgettable exchange involving Lt. Daniel Kaffee and Colonel Nathan R. Jessup:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FnO3igOkOk

Budget season is an exercise in both justice and truth.  It is the democratic, American way – and I invite you to be a part of it.  Today marked the beginning of more than six weeks of Metro Council Budget Committee hearings, which you are welcome to attend at City Hall or watch live on MetroTV from the comfort of your own home.  We have posted the full schedule online (in red) and I am eager to consider any questions you might have for the heads of our city departments or related agencies.  Please email them to me at: brandon.coan@louisvilleky.gov and copy jasmine.masterson@louisvilleky.gov or call: (502) 574-1108.

Finally, please note two public hearings on the schedule – Wednesday, May 10 at 6:30pm and Tuesday, May 16 at 6:00pm, both in Council Chambers at 601 West Jefferson Street, 3rd Floor.  Signups for those wishing to speak begin one hour prior to the start of the hearings, and speakers will have up to three minutes to make comments.

You can speak with Jasmine and me for as long as our schedules allow.

Best Regards,
