Give a Day a great success -
The Nightingale Apartment Community was just one of many acts of compassion - some 1,200 volunteers cleaned up alleys and roadways in Shelby Park, Smoketown, Shawnee and California. Hundreds gathered at Meyzeek Middle School to build beds for JCPS school children who didn’t have one. More than 3,000 students walked for compassion through downtown Louisville as part of the international WE Day. And still others repaired bikes for refugees or landscaped area nonprofits.
Those and many other projects and deeds amounted to more than 180,000 volunteers and acts of compassion during Louisville’s sixth annual Give A Day week of service, which ended April 23.
Audubon Park Festival of the Dogwood Celebration Concert at Audubon Baptist Church
Thanks to Jane Jonczy, president of the Audubon Park Garden Club, and Diane Osborne for arranging a wonderful Audubon Park Festival of the Dogwood Celebration Concert. Thanks to Louis and Carol Korb, who sponsored the concert.
During World War II, residents began to plant dogwood trees to honor relatives serving in the armed forces. Planting dogwood trees became a tradition, and the festival got its start in 1971.

Camp Taylor
area/Poplar Level and Trevilian Way MSD sanitary sewer replacement project
updates
MSD posts weekly street closure maps at the following link:
http://louisvillemsd.org/camp-taylor-sewer-replacement-project

Eastern Parkway water
main replacement
Phase one of Louisville Water’s historic water main improvement project is nearing the end. The 48-inch main has been restored from Eastern Parkway and Beargrass Creek to Cherokee Parkway and Grinstead Drive. All roads are open. The final step of this phase is restoration, which includes sidewalk and curb repair, grading and seeding of yards, and paving and is expected to be complete by June.
For more information on the project, go to http://louisvillewater.com/project-highlights/eastern-pkwy-project
Louisville Water wants your feedback on their communication efforts throughout the project. Since they will have two more phases to complete over the next two years, your input is greatly appreciated: Click here to fill out a short survey.
Bridge replacement underway on Eastern Parkway
Eastern Parkway has been reduced to one lane in each direction
between Poplar Level Road and Royal Avenue (mile markers 5.5 to 5.9). Traffic will be shifted to the westbound lanes so crews
can begin demolition of the old bridge on the existing eastbound lanes of
Eastern Parkway.
One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction
utilizing the existing westbound lanes. Short intermittent closures may occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement
weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Visit goky.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and
travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. You can also get
traffic information for the District 5 counties at facebook.com/KYTCDistrict5 and twitter.com/KYTCDistrict5 .
Residents - please
provide input to the MSD Critical Repair and Reinvestment Plan
 From MSD:
Flooded roadways, destroyed homes and raw sewage overflows are
reminders that our city’s ability to thrive depends on the most basic public
health and safety protection systems – wastewater, stormwater and flood
protection. MSD has completed an extensive analysis of these systems, and input
is needed from the community to determine how soon the critical
projects should be completed.
While Louisville can no longer avoid renewing and restoring its
vital systems, the difficult truth is the solutions come with a price tag of
$4.3 billion over the next 20 years. This includes almost $500 million to
finish the remaining Consent Decree projects to meet the federal order to
reduce sewer overflows. Recognizing the magnitude of the impact on
ratepayers and the community, MSD is embarking on a wide-reaching community
conversation.
Dialogue is underway through presentations with community
groups, business leaders, neighborhood associations, and faith-based
organizations - including the District 10 Advisory Board.
A dedicated website can be found at http://www.louisvillemsd.org/CriticalRepairPlan that
includes:
- A video message offering an
overview of the challenge and the opportunity to engage
- Brief summaries of the six
categories of risk to public health and safety including local pictures of
real consequences
- Links to the full Critical
Repair & Reinvestment Plan for review (hard copies of Volume 1 have
also been distributed to every public library in the county through March
1)
- A comment form to provide
direct input on the Plan (http://louisvillemsd.org/community-input-form)

Bicycle parking to be available at Wayside Park for Derby Week
Approximately 100 bicycle parking spaces will be
available during Derby Week at Wayside
Park near Churchill Downs, thanks to a partnership between Bicycling

Bike parking will be free of charge at the park, which is
located in the 3100 block of S. Third Street, on Thursday (Thurby),
Friday (Oaks Day) and Saturday (Derby Day).

LMAS Pets of the Week - Louise and Spoon
Four-year-old Louise is likely the most gentle cat you’ll meet.
Despite how scared she is in the shelter and unsure of what was happening to
her as she received her vaccinations, she didn’t give so much as hiss at the
doctor administering her shots.
Louise is a sensitive soul. She is gentle and
timid. Much of her shyness is a result of her fear in the shelter. When being
held by staff members at Louisville Metro Animal Services, Louise tends to bury
her head under their arms. She looks to people for security. She is a big baby
who needs to be loved and cuddled. Will you provide Louise with a safe and
comfortable forever home?
Louise’s owner surrendered her and her sister, Kiki,
because they no longer had time for them. Now, they are confused and unsure of
what their futures hold. Both are FREE to an approved adopter. Stop by the LMAS
Animal House Adoption Center (3516 Newburg Road) today to adopt! Be a hero. Save
a shelter pet.
|
Four-year-old Spoon is very sad and confused. She doesn't understand why she spent the first four years of her life in a home... and now she is in this scary and unfamiliar place people call an animal shelter.
Spoon's owner recently handed her over to Louisville Metro Animal Services at no fault of her own. Her owner had no time to care for her. Spoon doesn't understand what she did wrong to be abandoned by her family. Will you please adopt her and give her the love and attention she so deserves?
Spoon is FREE to an approved adopter. You can't put a price on the love she will give you. She has a true sense of companionship and forms bonds quickly... especially if hot dog treats are involved!
Spoon has been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Stop by the LMAS Animal House Adoption Center (3516 Newburg Road) today and leave with a companion that will fill your heart with joy every day.

Help Alley Cat Advocates
help unowned community cats while reducing taxpayer costs, euthanasia
Alley Cat Advocates (ACA) has received a grant of $58,900 from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). This generous grant will help ACA to expand outreach to provide spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and veterinary care to more community cats this year.
In 2012, the ASPCA selected Louisville to participate in their Community Partner program. Through this program, the ASPCA has worked with ACA, Louisville Metro Animal Services and the Kentucky Humane Society. The ASPCA has provided support and tools to help partner agencies achieve their shared goals of reducing the intake of animals into shelters and increasing live outcomes.

In the coming weeks, Develop Louisville will be holding six open house
forums to provide the public will an opportunity to view and to comment on the

engaging with citizens who have not yet participated in the Comprehensive Plan
update process. These forums will look similar to the Vision Louisville
forums that occurred a few years ago.

Metro Parks and Recreation announces creation of Junior Golf Tour beginning
this summer
Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation will be offering local youths the
opportunity to take part in a local golf tour that begins with a kickoff event
at Seneca Golf Course on May 28.
The “Louisville Junior Golf Tour” is designed for all children who play golf or
are interested in learning the sport. Metro Parks and Recreation golf pros have
come up with a series of one-day events with highlights that include easier,
more relaxed rules than traditional golf, short-yardage courses, stroke limits
with each hole, and affordable pricing with professional experience and
guidance from the pros themselves.
“We want to bridge the gap between kids who are introduced to the game casually
and the kids who compete in high-level golf tournaments,” said Tommy Betz, the
PGA Professional at Bobby Nichols Golf Course and Director of the Junior Golf
Tour. “This is the perfect way to start competing and more importantly begin by
learning to enjoy the game first.”
The tour starts with a “Kickoff Event” on Sunday, May 28th at
Seneca Golf Course for a cost of only $9.50 - the other tour events will
be $25 per player. To register and enter junior golfers, check out the
schedule and other pertinent information at LouisvilleJrTour.com.
Through May
19 - Art of Color at the Portland Museum highlights Irish/Kentucky
cultural exchange

In
1997, Susan Gorsen established the “GreenGrass/Bluegrass/NewGrass Project,” a
cultural exchange for visual artists. From these exchanges, the four artists represented
in this show bonded in friendships that cross boundaries, oceans, and
artistic mediums. We invite you to enjoy the work of Nicola Lynch Morrin, of County Kildare,
Republic of Ireland, Jane Lloyd, of Ballymena, Northern Ireland,
Susan Gorsen and Denise Mucci Furnish, of Louisville,
Kentucky, artists who use strong vibrant color as the primary language of
their artistry.
