The New Dixie Highway: Smarter Traffic Signals Will Improve Traffic Flow

When buses move efficiently through the corridor it is a benefit to bus riders and drivers alike. As part of the New Dixie Highway project, new, more advanced traffic signals will be installed and these will work closely with the state-of-the art rapid transit buses coming to Dixie Highway.

These new buses will be able to communicate with the new traffic signals, so that the light pattern can be held long enough to get the bus through the intersection.  It’s called “signal priority.” The signals will also move emergency response vehicles through intersections more quickly, as long as those vehicles are equipped with the corresponding communications devices.

These signal upgrades will be installed at 34 intersections. It will include every signalized intersection from Bethany Lane through to Garland Ave, except for the flashing lights at Bernheim Lane.

Left Turns and Safety

Limiting left turns raises convenience concerns for businesses and owners a like. But the safety benefits are tremendous. (And remember, safe driving not only means fewer injuries and deaths, but also fewer crash scenes and towing operations to tie up traffic and block business entrances.)

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has cited Louisville’s Hurstbourne Lane as an example of what medians can do. In the six months after a two-way left turn lane was replaced by a concrete median, the crash rate dropped from 7.6 crashes per month, to 4.4. Safer driving is better for everyone!
