D9 Community Conversation Tuesday Focuses on Trees

D9 Community Conversation

Courier-Journal photograph by Maggie Huber

The first D9 Community Conversation of 2017 focuses on trees and, specifically, the Public Tree Ordinance which I have co-sponsored and which will soon be considered by Metro Council. Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton is the other co-sponsor.  The full ordinance is here. Two Courier-Journal articles about the proposed ordinance are here and here. If you cannot attend the Community Conversation next week,  let us know what you think at Bill Hollander.

Louisville Metro Urban Forester, Erin Thompson, will be present at Tuesday’s D9 meeting, along with Cindi Sullivan of TreesLouisville and Jessica Pendergrass of Louisville Grows. Sullivan and Pendergrass will be discussing the significant tree-planting efforts of the non-profit organizations they lead.

As with all D9 Community Conversations, discussion of any other subjects is welcome and I will be available to talk with constituents about any questions, comments or concerns.  Mark your calendar - and bring along a friend or neighbor. The D9 Community Conversation will begin at 6:30 p.m. United Crescent Hill Ministries is located at 150 S. State Street in Clifton.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Schedule Changes

Metro Logo

Some solid waste collection services will be altered because of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday:

There will be no residential garbage, yard waste or recycling collection on Monday, January 16 in the Urban Services District (former Louisville city limits). Residents who normally have garbage/yard waste/recycling collection on Monday will have service instead on Tuesday, January 17, and collections for the rest of the week will be delayed one day.

Collections in St. Matthews will follow the regular schedule, with no delays.  Residents in other areas normally serviced by private waste haulers should check with those companies for holiday collection schedules.

Louisville Metro offices, including the D9 office, will be closed on Monday, January 16.

The following facilities will also be closed Saturday, January 14:

  • All staffed recycling centers
  • Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue
  •     EXCEPT that Electronics Drop-off Service is available       8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • HAZ BIN, the hazardous waste drop-off facility, 7501 Grade Lane

For more information visit http://louisvilleky.gov/government/public-works/trash-recycling or dial MetroCall at 311 or 574-5000.

Tax Preparation Appointments Available

Tax Preparation

My office is partnering with the Louisville Asset Building Coalition (LABC) to provide FREE tax preparation services again in 2017. The service is FREE if you earned $55,000 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) or less in 2016 or if you qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Call the office today to see if you qualify and make your appointment! Appointments are available on Fridays (February 3, 17, March 10, 24, and April 7) between 9:15 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Please call the office at 574-3908 to make an appointment.

Do you instead file your own taxes? Through the LABC website there are two options to self-file online. The “Turbo Tax Freedom Edition” is available if you have $31,000 or less in income. The software has a well-designed interview process that guides you through the process of making decisions about your filing status, inputting your income and making decisions about deductions and tax credits for which you may qualify. The other option is “My Free Taxes”, which is available if you make $62,000 or less. This program is developed by H&R Block and uses an interview process. Please visit, http://labcservices.org/index.php/free-tax-filing-at-labc-services, for more information.

Sustainability Story: Electronics Recycling Continues

Electronics

Last week’s electronics recycling event was a big success, as shown here, and there are two more weeks to participate.

Free post-holiday electronics drop-off service is available at the Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue. Drop-off will be available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the next two Saturdays: January 14 and January 21.

The special holiday promotion is in addition to Louisville Metro’s regular year round electronics recycling program. Details on the regular program are available on our website at https://louisvilleky.gov/government/public-works/electronics-recycling.

We’d like to feature your sustainability story - a resident or business doing good things for the environment.  Riding the bus, bicycling, walking, gardening and more - our eNews will feature practices which can benefit all of us.  Send your story to Bill Hollander or Kyle Ethridge

Slow Down in Mockingbird Valley (and Everywhere Else)

Road Safety

The Mayor of the City of Mockingbird Valley recently contacted my office regarding traffic calming measures on Mockingbird Valley when the road reopens next week.  Letters were mailed to all residents of the City of Mockingbird Valley last week with the following information:

Road Safety.  The culvert and bridge work on Mockingbird Valley Road is nearing completion, estimated January 16th.  As the road reopens, please help us set a tone and example of traffic calming not only on Mockingbird Valley Road, but also on our half dozen tributary streets, by driving at full attention, at or below speed limits. Posted limits of 25 and 35mph may seem slow to your engine capabilities and busy schedule, but are fast to pedestrians, children and animals. At your request, Homeland Patrol has been stopping cars for warnings and citations, plus once our main artery road is reopened, will briefly position a speed-monitoring trailer in the Mayfair and Lightfoot Rd areas of significant cut through.

I couldn’t have said it better myself – posted speed limits everywhere are plenty fast for pedestrians, children and animals! We should all slow down on all D9 streets.
