The New Dixie Highway project team is beginning work on final designs for this transformative project that will improve the safety and efficiency of the corridor.
The designs will be put together with input gathered from Dixie-area businesses and residents over the past several months. More than 300 people attended open house information sessions, and the project’s Advisory Team provided continued guidance on preliminary designs.
The New Dixie Highway will be a safer, more efficient Dixie Highway, with modern safety designs, signal improvements, and better sidewalks and crosswalks, particularly in the Crums Lane to Greenwood Road segment of the highway. A federal grant is paying for the region’s first Bus Rapid Transit system for TARC riders along this popular corridor.
“The recommendations from the advisory team of local business leaders and residents, as well as comments on social media and from the people attending our open house meetings will inform all the decisions we make as finalize the designs,” said John Callihan, Director of Transportation for Louisville Metro. “From the exact placement of left turn options, to the style of medians being planned, to the look of the Bus Rapid Transit stops, we are committed to making the New Dixie Highway a safer, more attractive and efficient corridor.”
The project officially launched at a news conference in August with Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer at the new Kroger Marketplace – the first of the superstore-style Kroger locations in the metro area and a symbol of the type of economic development that can be supported by improved roadway infrastructure
Drop off devices that have been gifted into
obsolescence
When new electronics such as
televisions and computers arrive in homes across the city this holiday season,
Louisville citizens shouldn’t relegate the old devices to the garage or
basement never to be used again. Let Metro Public Works recycle those newly
obsolete electronics instead.
Free post-holiday electronics
drop-off service is available at our Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether
Avenue. Drop-off will be available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on these three
Saturdays: January 7, January 14 and January 21.
The special holiday promotion is
in addition to our regular year round electronics recycling program. Details on
the regular program are available on our website at https://louisvilleky.gov/government/public-works/electronics-recycling.
Drop-off sites will recycle trees into mulch that
citizens can take home
Metro Public Works will provide
curbside pickup of Christmas Trees within the Urban Services District (the old
City of Louisville boundaries) after the holiday. Beginning Tuesday, December
27, residents with City curbside yard waste pickup may set their Christmas
trees and greenery out on their regular collection day. Trees must not be in
plastic bags, and all decorations must be removed.
Drop-off sites will also be
available for all Louisville/Jefferson County residents at three
locations. Two of the three drop-off sites will also instantly recycle trees in
to mulch that will be offered back to citizens for home use.
Those wishing to receive mulch
must bring an appropriate container in which to carry it. This mulch performs
particularly well for acid-loving plants such as azaleas and rhododendrons.
Trees picked up from curbside will also be recycled but not offered as mulch.
All lights and ornaments should be removed from trees before they are set out
or dropped off.
Residents normally serviced by
private waste haulers should check with those companies to see whether and when
tree pickup is available.
Christmas tree vendors may recycle their unsold
trees on Tuesday, December 27 ONLY, and only at the Hubbard’s Lane site.

 West
Louisville has over 60,000 residents, who need convenient, affordable options
for shopping. West Louisville residents need employment opportunities. And,
West Louisville residents pledge their support for the Wal-Mart Superstore
#6391 at West Broadway and 18th Street.
Wal-Mart's
decision to cancel plans for the new supercenter leaves residents in West
Louisville without access to affordable goods and services that many other
communities take for granted.
We,
in Southwest Louisville, have certainly seen the economic impact that
development can have on a community. As our development momentum grows along
Dixie Highway, please consider supporting our neighbors and fellow citizens in
their plea to bring this store to their neighborhood.
