Recycling and Yard Waste Collection
Solid waste collection services will be altered under the following schedule for the Christmas and New Year’s holiday weeks:
Garbage/yard waste/recycling
- There will be no residential garbage, yard waste or recycling collection on Monday, December 26 or Monday, January 2 within in the Urban Services District (former Louisville city limits).
- Residents who normally have garbage/yard waste/recycling collection on Monday will have service instead on Tuesday, December 27 and Tuesday, January 3. The Tuesday-Friday schedule will also be delayed by one day.
- Residents normally serviced by private waste haulers should check with those companies for holiday collection schedules.
Staffed Recycling Centers
These centers will be closed Saturday December 24, Monday December 26, Saturday December 31 and Monday January 2.
- East District Public Works Yard 595 N. Hubbards Lane
- Metro Parks Landscaping 9300 Whipps Mill Road
- Southwest Government Center 7219 Dixie Highway
- Central Government Center 7201 Outer Loop
-
Waste Reduction Center 636 Meriwether Avenue Closed Saturday, December 24, Monday, December 26, Saturday December 31, and Monday January 2.
-
HAZ BIN Hazardous Waste Facility 7501 Grade Lane Closed Saturday, December 24 and Saturday December 31
Metro Public Works will provide curbside pickup of Christmas Trees within the Urban Services District (the old City of Louisville boundaries) after the holiday. Beginning Tuesday, December 27, residents with City curbside yard waste pickup may set their Christmas trees and greenery out on their regular collection day.
- Trees must not be in plastic bags, and all decorations must be removed.
- Drop-off sites will also be available for all Louisville/Jefferson County residents at three locations.
- Two of the three drop-off sites will also instantly recycle trees in to mulch that will be offered back to citizens for home use.
- Those wishing to receive mulch must bring an appropriate container in which to carry it. This mulch performs particularly well for acid-loving plants such as azaleas and rhododendrons.
- Trees picked up from curbside will also be recycled but not offered as mulch.
- All lights and ornaments should be removed from trees before they are set out or dropped off.
-

Trash cans overflow
during the holiday season, with one estimate that we generate 25% more waste
than usual this time of year. A good sustainability practice is to
divert as much as possible to the recycle bin. Here are some do's
and don’ts about holiday recycling.
DO
recycle those cardboard boxes. They are high-value recyclables but the number
of them we have over the holidays and limited space in our bins sometimes
means they end up in the trash. Don’t do that. If your bin won’t
hold all of the broken down boxes you have, save a few for next week or visit
a recycling center (D9’s is in the parking lot of the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic
Center, 201 Reservoir Avenue). Don’t worry if the box has some tape on
it. (And don’t assume that pizza boxes can’t be recycled. Many
pizzerias now put a sheet of waxed paper between the box and the pizza, leaving
the box clean once that’s removed. All you have to do is remove that paper
and the clean pizza box is recyclable.)

We'll
take the old when you get the new
When the holiday
season ushers in new electronics such as televisions, computers, and the like,
don't let the old ones sit in the garage or basement. Public Works is happy to
take them off your hands so they can be recycled. All you have to do is bring
those newly obsolete devices to us at the Waste Reduction Center at 636
Meriwether Avenue. The service is free of charge. Special drop-off collections
will be held during regular Waster Reduction Center hours on Saturday January
7, Saturday January 14 and Saturday January 21. Regular Saturday hours are 8
AM. to 3 PM. Read more about year round electronics recycling.
