Eastern Parkway water main replacement

Eastern Parkway map 1Eastern parkway water work 2

From Louisville Water:

Louisville Water is two months into a project to replace one of the oldest water mains in its system, a 1930 pipe that runs along Eastern Parkway. This weekend the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Baxter Avenue will be closed to traffic from Friday, December 16 at 8:00 pm to 5:00 am Monday, December 19. Louisville Water will work in the middle of this intersection to replace a large section of the water main. Following the weekend work, Louisville Water will close Eastern Parkway from Baxter Avenue to Bardstown Road until Friday, December 30

Replacing this water main is a complex project because the pipe is located underneath Eastern Parkway, a historic and developed area of the city. Instead of digging up the entire parkway, crews push a 42-inch diameter pipe inside the larger 48- inch pipe. Because the old main turns, there are sections where crews must cut out the original pipe rather than push it through the intersection. In other instances, the size of the excavation site to insert the new pipe does not allow motorists to safely pass.

That's the case for these closures. Because the original water main turns and crosses Baxter Avenue, Louisville Water needs to close all four lanes of Eastern Parkway and Baxter Avenue to safely install the new water main. While we won't dig up the entire stretch of Eastern Parkway, the main is located near the center of the roadway, which will require a large excavation site.

Visit LouisvilleWater.com/EasternPkwyProject or Twitter @LouisvilleWater for traffic information and detour maps. No customers will lose water service during the work.

Louisville Water is on a tight schedule to install the new water main. Crews are doing the work over the winter months because this is the only time Louisville Water can safely take the large water main out of service without impacting water quality and service, pressure and fire protection. We appreciate your patience.

Please visit LouisvilleWater.com/EasternPkwyProject for more information and up-to-date traffic details.

Eight million Cuisinart food processors recalled by Conair- check yours before using

Cuisinart blade

At left, the blades affected by the recall have four rivets and are silver-colored stainless steel and have a beige plastic center hub.

The food processor’s riveted blade can crack over time and small, metal pieces of the blade can break off into the processed food. This poses a laceration hazard to consumers.

The blades in question have four rivets, are silver-colored stainless steel and have a beige plastic center hub. Both the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Cuisinart note, however, that only food processors with four rivets in the blades are included in this recall.

This recall affects 22 models made in China that were sold between July 1996 and December 2015, at a price point between $100 and $350 when purchased.

The CPSC encouraged anyone who may have purchased one of these models to check the bottom of the food processor and compare it with the following affected model numbers that begin with the following: CFP-9, CFP-11, DFP-7, DFP-11, DFP-14, DLC-5, DLC-7, DLC-8, DLC-10, DLC-XP, DLC-2007, DLC-2009, DLC-2011, DLC-2014, DLC-3011, DLC-3014, EV-7, EV-10, EV-11, EV-14, KFP-7 and MP-14.

Any consumer with the affected blade should immediately stop using the food processor and contact Cuisinart for a free replacement blade. Consumers can contact Cuisinart toll-free at 877-339-2534 from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Saturday and Sunday, or online at www.cuisinart.com. Click on "Product Recalls" at the bottom of the page for more information on the voluntary recall.

Don't leave your car running and unoccupied

stolen car

Don't give thieves a Merry Christmas - don't leave your car running unoccupied.

A warning from the Louisville Metro Police Department:

Officers will issue a citation to the owners of any vehicles that they observe running and unoccupied.

First, it's against the law. It's also risky, as it makes it easy for a thief to drive away with your vehicle. Two vehicles left running and unattended were stolen last week in LMPD's Sixth Division alone.

Mariette the Amur tiger

Winter is a good time to grab a hot cocoa and go for a walk in the zoo. The beautiful cat above, Mariette ("Etta" to her keepers), is one zoo resident who enjoys cold weather. In their home range in Russia, Amur tigers live in negative thirty degree tempuratures, so Etta enjoys sitting in the snow. She is one of about 560 Amur tigers left in the world. Amur tigers were previously also known as Siberian tigers, but the name was changed to more accurately reflect the region in which they are found, since they are only found near the Amur River.

TARC seeks student artists for "Design A Bus" contest

Trees Louisville logo

TARC and TreesLouisville, Inc. are partnering this year for the 18th annual Design-a-Bus contest, featuring artwork by schoolchildren throughout Louisville and Southern Indiana.

This year’s artwork will highlight the theme “Trees Louisville” to draw attention to the need to plant trees for a more livable and healthy community now and for future generations.

The contest is open to all elementary and middle school students in Jefferson, Oldham and Bullitt counties in Kentucky and Floyd and Clark counties in Southern Indiana. Twelve winners will be chosen to have their posters displayed on a TARC bus, and winners and their adult guests will be invited to participate in the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade on Thursday, May 4, 2017 celebrating their victory. Artwork becomes the property of TARC.

Art for the contest could underscore the many benefits of trees. They create stronger, more positive communities with safer streets, less crime and more successful business districts. Trees also lead to improved health and air quality. They absorb storm water, prevent erosion, provide wildlife habitat, moderate temperatures, provide energy savings, and reduce noise levels.

For further inspiration, students are encouraged to visit https://treeslouisville.org/ or ridetarc.org.

Entries should be in marker, crayon or paint and submitted on 11-by-17 white paper, or digitally through a JPEG or PDF file. Entries will be judged on visual appeal, creativity, originality and message. All artwork is to be produced by the student only. This year's entry deadline is Friday, Feb. 24, 2017.

Entry forms must be attached to hard or digital copies. For copies of entry forms, visit  www.ridetarc.org or e-mail Russell Goodwin rgoodwin@ridetarc.org or Jessica Holman at jholman@ridetarc.org. Digital copies of entries with forms attached can also be sent to Russell and Jessica. Paper entries should be sent to TARC, c/o Marketing Department., 1000 W. Broadway, Louisville, Ky. 40203.

Louisville selected to receive $29.5 million HUD grant to jumpstart Russell revitalization

Vision Russell

Mayor Greg Fischer announced Monday that Louisville is receiving a $29.5 million implementation grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Choice Neighborhoods Initiative program.

The federal funding is expected to leverage more than $200 million in private, foundation, nonprofit and public dollars to fully implement Vision Russell, a comprehensive transformation plan for the neighborhood, starting with a phased deconstruction and redevelopment of the Beecher Terrace public housing site. Vision Russell was developed over the past two years by Louisville Metro Government, the Louisville Metro Housing Authority (LMHA) and community residents, agencies and leaders.

Noting that Louisville Central Community Centers will be a development partner in Vision Russell, the Mayor added, “Our collective goal is to use this opportunity to replace the so-called ‘Ninth Street Divide’ with a beautiful new bridge of opportunity and hope.”

Vision Russell efforts will focus on several key components in transforming the neighborhood, including:

  • Tearing down and redeveloping Beecher Terrace into a sustainable, multi-generational, mixed-income, mixed-use development;
  • Developing one-for-one, off-site replacement housing for Beecher Terrace residents in their neighborhoods of choice;
  • Increasing safety and security;
  • Re-creating strong retail and service centers within the neighborhood;
  • Improving educational and health outcomes for Beecher Terrace and Russell households; and
  • Improving community connectivity.

“This is a much larger-scale version of projects that have successfully brought new vitality to other neighborhoods in Louisville, like Liberty Green, Sheppard Square and Park Duvalle,” said LMHA executive director Tim Barry, “and it will directly benefit the people who live in Beecher Terrace and the surrounding community.”

Construction in Russell will start in mid- to late 2017 and continue for seven years. At least 25 percent of the work will be performed by minority-owned businesses, 10 percent by female-owned businesses, and a half percent by businesses owned by disabled people.
