Last Weekend for Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at Iroquois Park

In what has become the must-see event of the Halloween season, the Jack O’ Lantern Spectacular is returning for the fourth consecutive year to south Louisville’s Iroquois Park, where 5,000 artistically carved pumpkins will greet visitors from Oct. 13 through Nov. 6. The pumpkins will illuminate a 1/3-mile trail adjacent to the Iroquois Amphitheater, and Metro Parks officials estimate up to 90,000 people will visit.

The trail is open from dusk until 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. Tickets range from $9 to $15, with discounts for seniors and children 12 and under. Proceeds from the event benefit the Louisville Parks Foundation.  

TICKET INFORMATION  Sunday – Thursday Adults $12, Seniors (62+) $10 and Children (3-12) $9

Friday - Saturday Adults $15, Seniors (62+) $13 and Children (3-12) $12 

Individual tickets may be purchased in advance for specific nights at the Iroquois Amphitheater Box Office or online at www.jackolanternlouisville.com. Visitors are also encouraged to use the hashtag #502Pumpkins on social media to share images or experiences they enjoy while touring the show.

Tickets for groups of 25 or more can be purchased in advance by calling 502/368-5063, or in person at the Iroquois Amphitheater Box Office between 9 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, and Saturdays from 12 – 4 p.m. The Ticket booths will open at 5 p.m. beginning October 13. 

Group tickets are discounted at $10 Sunday through Thursday and $12 on Friday and Saturday. 

The event is held rain or shine. No refunds will be given, but advanced purchased tickets may be exchanged for another day.

Trees Louisville Speaks to Sustainability Committee

Executive Director Cindi Sullivan of Trees Louisville,  spoke to the Louisville Metro Council Committee on Sustainability, chaired by Councilwoman Cindi Fowler, on Thursday to update members on the status of expanding and maintaining the Louisville Tree Canopy.  New initiatives with JCPS will be discussed, as well as, opportunities to volunteer.  Visit their website for more information at https://treeslouisville.org/

The purpose of Trees Louisville is to build the necessary support and capacity in the broader community to reach a goal of tree canopy coverage of 45% over the next decades.  Setting an urban tree canopy goal is critical along with having a Mayor who clearly recognizes the value of trees.


New LIHEAP Automated Phone and On-Line Appointment System

Income-eligible residents can now make an appointment for LIHEAP by phone or on-line, instead of coming in person.

The Subsidy Phase of LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, begins Tuesday and will operate through Dec. 9, 2016,  Appointments can be scheduled now.  Read here for eligibility and other details.

Leaf Drop-off Sites to Open November 8

Louisville Metro residents not mulching autumn leaves into their lawns or using curbside collection will have the option to dispose of them at one of three drop-off sites beginning November 8. Metro Public Works is offering a free leaf drop-off service November 8 through December 3. Drop-off will not be available on November 24 and 25 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.

Neighborhood Place Partners Offer Car Seat Checks, Energy Management Tips and Much More in November

Neighborhood Place sites in Louisville have helped to organize an assortment of workshops and outreaches during November including two car seat checks, several energy efficiency outreaches, a resume-writing workshop and a heroin addiction information session. To learn more about these services, including reservations requirements and contact info, please refer to the phone numbers listed by each event.

Nov.1, Kosair Children’s Hospital Car Seat Check at Ujima Neighborhood Place, 9 - 11 a.m.
Located at 3610 Bohne Ave.  Call 629-7358 for an appointment.  Learn how to install your child’s car seat or booster seat and find out if it’s time for a change.   

Nov. 1, 15 and 29, Adecco Employment Opportunities at First Neighborhood Place, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Nov.  2, Heroin Addiction in “Our Own Backyard” at First Baptist Church, Fairdale, 6 – 8:30 p.m.
Located at 413 Fairdale Rd., Fairdale, KY.  Call 363-1483 for more information. This workshop will involve five local experts discussing the epidemic of heroin use in our community.  The workshop is an opportunity to gain education about the physical, psychological and addictive effects of the drug.  Naloxone training will be provided at the end of the evening, and free naloxone kits will be offered for those who attend the training.  Sponsored in part by South Jefferson Neighborhood Place.

Located at 3610 Bohne Ave. Valerie Holland with University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension will provide tips, ideas and tools to create an ideal budget to begin the new year.

Call 363-1483 for more information.  A representative from the Louisville Free Public Library will be on hand to sign interested persons up for library cards, answers questions about resources at the library, and provide information on upcoming events at your local library office.

Call 1-800-356-5467 for more information.  Representatives from the WeCare Program at LG&E will be on hand to talk with interested persons about energy efficiency, energy usage and tips to reduce utility bills. WeCare staff can also help determine if households are eligible for a variety of free services including air duct sealing and insulation, attic and wall insulation, programmable thermostats and much more.

Located at 3610 Bohne Ave.  Call 629-7244 to register.  Neighborhood Place Ujima and DuValle Education Center are working with Kosair Children's Hospital Child Passenger Safety Technicians and University of Louisville Pediatrics to host a car seat education event to answer your questions about how your children ride in a vehicle.  Each family who attends the brief child passenger safety education workshop will be invited to have their children and car seats checked by certified child passenger safety technicians immediately following the workshop.  One free car seat will be provided to each family if there is a need for one.

Two opportunities for the YMCA’s “Caring and Learning with Me” program at Thomas Jefferson Middle School

Located at 4255 Hazelwood Avenue. Call 502-899-6842 for more information or to make an appointment. The Mobile Unit will offer low/no-cost mammograms and pap smears for women age 40 and over. Must be at least one complete year since the last mammogram, be able to stand unassisted for at least 15 minutes, not have any current issues or undergoing cancer treatment. Insurance will be billed and co-pay may apply- contact your insurance carrier for eligibility. Funding is available for those who are uninsured.

FREE Junk Drop Off at Waste Reduction Center

The Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue provides a means for all Louisville/Jefferson County residents to properly dispose of tires and household bulk waste including metals, appliances, electronics, tree limbs and stumps up to three feet in diameter, unbagged yard waste, construction debris and furniture. Up to three household junk items may be dropped off at no charge per day. If there are more than three items a fee will be charged according to the schedule below.

GO APE ADVENTURE

Located at 11311 Mitchell Hill Road, GO Ape’s first treetop adventure course (zip lines, obstacles and more!) in Kentucky is just minutes from downtown Louisville in Jefferson Memorial Forest. Jefferson Memorial Forest is a woodland tribute to area veterans and a treasure to all who visit. Designated as an Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary, the forest has approximately 6,500 acres of steep slopes covered with mature, second growth hardwood trees, and is the largest municipal urban forest in the United States.

More than just a canopy tour, the Go Ape Jefferson Memorial Forest course is made up of numerous rope ladders, 39 exciting crossings to include the Log Swing, Wobbly Ladder, Japanese Bridge, Plank Crossing, Yamazoe Steps, 2 Tarzan swings and 5 zip lines. Overall, there are 5 individual sections within the course, each section taking you higher into the forest canopy and finishing with a zip line more exciting than the previous one!

Spend a day at Jefferson Memorial Forest to enjoy all the park has to offer.  Before or after your Go Ape adventure, check out the park’s 5.5 acre fishing lake at Tom Wallace Lake. From Tom Wallace Lake there is access to 35 miles of hiking, equestrian, and wheel-chair accessible trails as well as a children’s playground and picnic shelters. The Forest also has a Welcome Center for trail maps and hiking supplies, and the Horine Conference Center is available for rent for business retreats, meetings, and weddings.  If you want to hang around for a day or two, you can even pitch a tent in the Forest’s campground which accommodates both families and groups.
