NEWBURG MIDDLE SCHOOL TIGERS
FOOTBALL TEAM
2016 STATE CHAMPIONS

October
30, 2016, the 2016 Newburg Football Team beat
Bowling Green in overtime (14/11) to win the FIRST State
Football Championship in the school’s history.
This great group of young men also became the FIRST
middle school in JCPS’s history to be honored
as State Champions in Football.
The
Newburg Tigers have only 35 players combined on the JV
(junior varsity) and Varsity football
teams. Even battling low numbers, both teams hit major milestones this season.
Newburg was the only school in the state of Kentucky that had both JV and Varsity Teams competing at the state semi-finals.
What makes this monumental event even more special is that before
the season, throughout the season, and even post-season, these young men stayed
focused academically in the classroom and maintained great citizenship
throughout our school.
Having to submit the weekly NMS Tigers on Target Academic and
Citizenship Forms to their coaches, athletic director, and principal helped
ensure Newburg had STUDENT athletes on the field. Lastly, a HUGE thanks
to Head Coaches Melvin Blakey and Darryl Clay for always keeping the bar high
and expectations even higher for this outstanding group of 35 young men!

Jefferson County Public Schools
Jefferson
County Public Schools is working to update its policy to no longer require
tuition for students who enroll early for kindergarten after it said it
realized that the state does provide funding to schools for such students.
Students who turn 5 years old after the kindergarten eligibility cutoff date –
which for next fall will be Aug. 1 – but who can meet certain standards can
choose to enroll in kindergarten early. As late as this month, JCPS had been
saying that such students would have to pay about $6,000 in tuition because, it
said, the state only pays the per-pupil expense for children 5 and older.

Neighborhood Place Relocates
A new Neighborhood Place will open next week in the East
Government Center in Middletown, replacing the location in the soon-to-close
Urban Government Center.
The relocation will allow Neighborhood Place to expand its
footprint to a part of the city underserved by this agency. About 18,000
families in the zip codes served at the new location qualify for the school
free or reduced lunch program.
The new location at 200 Juneau Drive will be named for Jane
Charmoli, one of Neighborhood Place’s founding champions.
The Charmoli Center will house staff from multiple agencies —
Louisville Metro Community Services, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS),
Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services and Seven Counties Services,
Inc. —in one accessible location. Core services provided include:
- Financial and housing assistance with case management
services
- Juvenile and school-related services
- Child abuse intervention and prevention
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
- Medicaid Assistance
- Substance abuse assessment
- A Dare to Care emergency food pantry
- Self-sufficiency programs
All agency email addresses and phone numbers, including the main
front desk line of 574-6638, will remain the same. The Charmoli Center will
have ample, free parking at the new facility which is also accessible by a
couple TARC bus routes. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday,
8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
A total of eight Neighborhood Places, along with two satellite
sites, serve residents across Jefferson County. The decision to relocate
810 Barret Neighborhood Place was prompted by the closure of the Urban
Government Center. The 810 Barret location was previously the most eastern
Neighborhood Place.
