New e-EPO Protection System Aids Domestic Violence Victims

A new electronic system is greatly speeding up the process – saving time and potentially lives -- when victims of domestic violence in Louisville are seeking protection from an abuser. The e-EPO system takes information from victims seeking protection orders and gets it more quickly into the hands of judges and law enforcement. Individuals seeking a domestic violence or emergency protection order (EPO) previously faced a lengthy, inefficient process that relied on paper copies which often caused the victim to wait a long time for judicial review and approval. With the new system, a petition is sent electronically to a judge who can provide an electronic signature and approve the order within minutes. Once issued, the EPO is electronically sent to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office where it is transferred into LINK, the Law Enforcement Information Network of Kentucky, making the EPO available to law enforcement via mobile data computers. The e-EPO system was funded with $170,000 in federal Recovery Act dollars through the Violence Against Women Act. Victims seeking safety and protection orders visit the Domestic Violence Intake Center at the Hall of Justice, which is open 24/7. There, they meet with a deputy circuit clerk who sends their information and request for a protection order electronically to a judge.

Metro Animal Services resumes intake at Manslick location

Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) has closed the temporary shelter and will resume emergency intakes at the Manslick location. The temporary shelter, in the old public works building on Newburg Road next to the Animal House Adoption Center, was initially opened to the public on Tuesday, September 20 in an effort to stop the spread of disease. The animals identified as low risk (adequate immune systems) and showing no signs of upper respiratory illnesses were put up for adoption or given a second chance by rescue groups. The animals with weak immune systems continue to be treated and our located in a separate building. Additional blood tests will determine if their immune systems have improved. All new animals arriving at Manslick will be cared for in a separate building by staff that will not have any contact with the previous in an effort to prevent the spread of disease and prevent cross contamination. All populations are continually monitored by vet staff. Every pet owner is encouraged to take precaution as upper respiratory diseases including distemper continue to be an issue throughout the community and southeast region of the United States. Getting animals vaccinated is the best way to prevent the spread of these potentially deadly diseases.
