 The “Canoemobile” is making its annual stop in Louisville
on September 30-Oct. 1, bringing fun and exploration through free trips
for all ages on 24-foot Voyageur canoes on the Ohio River. The program, locally
in its fifth year, is organized by Metro Parks’ Natural Areas Division based at
Jefferson Memorial Forest in partnership with Wilderness Inquiry, Inc. of
Minneapolis.
The Voyageur canoes are safe, stable and can carry 9 participants
per trip. Safety equipment and trained staff will be provided. Organizers
suggest wearing comfortable outdoor clothing that can get wet, but no
flip-flops. Water coolers will be available, so bring a refillable water
bottle. Food also will be available for purchase.
Pre-registration is not required, and all trips will be offered on
a first-come, first-served basis. Trips will leave every 30 minutes. All
participants must sign a waiver, and those under the age of 18 must have a
waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. Forms can be found at memorialforest.com.

The Valley Woman's Club will be hosting a Bean
Soup Supper and Bake Sale on Friday, October 7, 2016 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at
Sun Valley Community Center on Bethany Lane. Menu: Bean Soups, Corn
Bread, Crackers, Dessert, Coffee and Tea. The tickets will be:
Adults - $6.00 and Children 10 and under $4.00. Community is
invited to attend and enjoy.

The Valley Woman's Club will be participating in the State's First Lady's Shop
and Share Program at the Valley Commons Kroger store on Saturday, October 1,
2016 from 8:00 AM To 4:00 PM to benefit the local Center for Women and
Families. Please come out and support the Club in collecting necessary
items for this organization that is in need of support from the community.
All items collected will remain the Louisville area.
The Southwest Community Festival is the largest one-day event in
Southwest Jefferson County. To highlight a few of the wonderful

The Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue provides a means for all Louisville/Jefferson County residents to properly dispose of tires and household bulk waste including metals, appliances, electronics, tree limbs and stumps up to three feet in diameter, unbagged yard waste, construction debris and furniture. Up to three household junk items may be dropped off at no charge per day. If there are more than three items a fee will be charged according to the schedule below.

Talking Service: A Program for Veterans, Active Duty Military Personnel, and their Families

Veterans, active duty military personnel, and their families are invited to this conversation circle, in which various pieces of literature are used to facilitate candid discussions on a host of topics: bonds created while serving, sacrifices made, experiences gained, and transitions faced upon return. Led by experienced facilitators, Talking Service offers an opportunity to share perspectives and opinions in a comfortable, neutral setting. (Family members between the ages of 5 and 12 are invited to enjoy a storytime while the Talking Service conversation takes place, as that will be geared for an adult audience.) The Fall Community-Wide Cleanup will be taking place on Saturday, October 22nd, 2016. So mark your calendars now! Online registration will open on Monday, August 15th so be sure to sign up early. All cleanup teams will receive bags and gloves at no cost, and the first 5,000 volunteers to register will also receive a free t-shirt.
Neighborhoods can hold their own cleanups at any point throughout the year and we can provide gloves and bags for each Neighborhood Cleanup. We will work with Solid Waste Management to have the collected litter bags picked up. Give us a call at (502) 574-2613 about two weeks prior to your event to schedule your cleanup and for information about getting supplies.

Serving
on a board or commission is a great way to utilize your talents. We hope you
will consider volunteering your time with us and encourage you to browse the
openings regularly for opportunities that would best utilize your experience
and knowledge. We have approximately 100 boards and commissions with
many areas of interest, including business and economic development, land
planning, parks and recreation, public health and public safety. It is
important that these boards have adequate representation from all areas of
town, including District 14 and Southwest Louisville, as they are responsible
for evaluating many important decisions that impact our city and its citizens.

 Located at 11311 Mitchell Hill Road, GO Ape’s first treetop adventure course (zip lines,
obstacles and more!) in Kentucky is just minutes from downtown
Louisville in Jefferson Memorial Forest. Jefferson Memorial Forest is
a woodland tribute to area veterans and a treasure to all who visit. Designated
as an Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary, the forest has approximately 6,500 acres of
steep slopes covered with mature, second growth hardwood trees, and is the
largest municipal urban forest in the United States.
More than just a canopy tour, the Go Ape Jefferson Memorial
Forest course is made up of numerous rope ladders, 39 exciting crossings to
include the Log Swing, Wobbly Ladder, Japanese Bridge, Plank
Crossing, Yamazoe Steps, 2 Tarzan swings and 5 zip lines. Overall, there
are 5 individual sections within the course, each section taking you higher
into the forest canopy and finishing with a zip line more exciting than the
previous one!

Spend a day at Jefferson Memorial Forest to enjoy all
the park has to offer. Before or after your Go Ape adventure, check out
the park’s 5.5 acre fishing lake at Tom Wallace Lake. From Tom Wallace Lake
there is access to 35 miles of hiking, equestrian, and wheel-chair accessible
trails as well as a children’s playground and picnic shelters. The Forest also
has a Welcome Center for trail maps and hiking supplies, and the Horine
Conference Center is available for rent for business retreats, meetings, and weddings.
If you want to hang around for a day or two, you can even pitch a tent in
the Forest’s campground which accommodates both families and groups.
The Spirit of Jefferson will return to Riverview Park in
Southwest Louisville on Sunday, October 23rd! The Steamboat will set sail for
two cruises leaving from Riverview Park (formerly the Greenwood Boat Docks at
8202 Greenwood Road).
This is a free event but remember that seating is limited for
the cruises. To reserve your spot in advance, you can stop by Southwest
Community Ministries at 8504 Terry Road during their regular business hours. A
$5 minimum donation per seat is suggested to reserve your spot. Those wanting
to attend can also board the day of the event on a first-come, first-served
basis.
Cruises are at 1:30 pm at 4:00 pm with boarding beginning one
half hour before each. Please contact the District 12 office at 502.574.1112
for more details or questions. We hope that you can attend this special event
and help us to support Southwest Community Ministries.
