LIHEAP Early
Registration for Elderly and Disabled Residents
Begins Oct. 3rd
LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) is a
federally funded program that provides financial assistance to help low income
residents pay utility bills. The subsidy component of LIHEAP begins Nov.
1, 2016.
Pre-registration opportunities will be offered beginning
Oct. 3rd for those Jefferson County residents who are on a fixed income, and
who are elderly (age 60 or over) or disabled receiving Social Security, SSI,
pension or Black Lung benefits. These early registration events take
place at 14 community centers and senior centers across the community.

Volunteers are needed to help clean up the medium area at
Old Shepherdsville and Newburg Roads. District
2 paid to have this beautification project completed. However, later learned that this medium is on State
Roads; and the State will not do the upkeep. If you are interested in volunteering

Metro Parks and Recreation Seeking AmeriCorps Member Positions
Metro Parks’ mission is to take care of all Metro parks properties, enhance environmental resources and grow a sustainable community. As a part of that mission, Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation is searching for Americorps members for various divisions within the organization.
All AmeriCorps members will be serving at sites within Jefferson County, Kentucky. Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation divisions include Urban Forestry and Landscaping, Natural Areas, Jefferson Memorial Forest, and the Volunteer Program. AmeriCorps member positions are full-time and each member is expected to serve a minimum of 1,700 hours during their 12-month term of service. Sock Drive for the Homeless
Great project for your church or civic organization:
Community Services' RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program)
needs your help again this year in collecting socks, towels, hand towels and
wash cloths for the homeless.
Why? At the Project Homeless Connect/Stand Down event on Oct.
5th, foot washing will once again be offered for homeless veteran attendees and
other homeless participants. Each foot-washing client needs the caring
volunteer to use a clean washcloth, towel and provide new socks to take with
them.

the Edison Center, 701 W. Ormsby Ave., Suite 201 (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 5

Youth In Action Network is an
organization that empowers young people in building a positive image in their
community through community activism. Madison and Kyla are also hostesses of

Police
have to look no further than Facebook to find images of young men, holding up
guns, money and gang signs with the call letters of their gang right in their
profile names. "I'm not surprised -- none whatsoever," Urban
Coalition President Neal Robinson told WAVE 3 News. Robinson has worked with
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer to try to connect with teens on the streets. He
said that in most cases, the teens are usually on their own.

Louisville neighborhoods with railroad crossings could
expect longer wait times for passing trains starting next month, as CSX
Transportation begins to implement changes to increase traffic between
Louisville and Indianapolis. Last year, the federal Surface Transportation
Board approved an agreement between CSX and the Louisville and Indiana Railroad
Company in which CSX would fund nearly $100 million in infrastructure
improvements on LIRC’s 106-mile railroad corridor between Louisville and
Indianapolis in return for increasing the use of its trains over that line.
That means CSX trains normally diverted through Cincinnati now will
increasingly go through Louisville into Indiana.
