Special Alert from Kentucky Transportation Cabinet

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is posting a 3-ton weight limit on KY 22 (Brownsboro Road) at the culvert over Little Goose Creek near Ten Broeck Way in Jefferson County. Recent inspection showed deterioration of this stone-arch culvert which is located between Goose Creek Road and Hurstbourne Parkway (mile point 3.2).

The posted limit has the effect of restricting all commercial vehicle traffic from this section of KY 22. Vehicles greater than 3-tons must use an alternate route. Passenger vehicles and unloaded pick-up trucks will be allowed to cross the culvert.

“Posting a 3-ton weight limit is necessary to prevent further deterioration of this culvert and keep KY 22 open to passenger vehicles,” said Matt Bullock, chief district engineer for the Department of Highways, Louisville District. “Our staff has been monitoring this culvert since early 2016 and began design plans for a replacement project.”

KYTC staff are currently purchasing some needed right-of-way for construction of the new culvert. Advertisement for construction bids is scheduled for early 2017.

How will this effect your child's school bus route?

Councilwoman Leet's office reached out to Jefferson County Public Schools to see how this weight limit restriction may effect your child's school bus route and we were informed that some bus riders from Norton and Norton Commons Elementary; Kammerer, Meyzeek and Noe Middle; and Ballard and Manual High Schools may notice their bus rides increase by up to 10 minutes as a result of this decision by KYTC.

After district leaders were notified of a downgraded section of KY 22 in east Louisville that is now unable to support the weight of a 10-ton bus the JCPS Transportation Office immediately began crafting new routes for 30 JCPS school buses. For the start of the new school year Wednesday, those buses have been rerouted to travel: Westport Road to Hurstbourne Parkway; U.S. 42 to Gene Snyder; and Herr Lane to Westport Road to Goose Creek. Neighborhoods should not see an increase in bus cut through traffic as a result of the route changes along KY 22.

JCPS will continue to staff it's transportation hotline this week, and families with additional questions about the bus routes may call 485-RIDE for more information.
