Councilman Mulvihill with Major Ryan Bates, Fourth Division Commander, left, and LMPD Chief Steve Conrad, right, at the Fourth District NNO event at Wyandotte Park.

Tuesday night, the men and women of the Louisville Metro Police Department visited with the people they serve all over the Metro area.

These community get-togethers, held at seven locations, were part of National Night Out. NNO is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live.

This year's theme for Louisville was "Unite for Peace," and gave LMPD officers a relaxed setting in the neighborhoods they patrol to introduce themselves and get to know the people who make those neighborhoods part of Metro Louisville.

Councilman Mulvihill attended NNO events for the Fourth District, at Wyandotte Park, and the Sixth District, at the Target on Jefferson Boulevard.

The events featured a variety of free activities including police and fire vehicles and displays, free food, giveaways, dunking booths, mascots, face painting, and plenty of opportunities to sit down with local leaders to discuss crime prevention strategies.

TARC adds six new all-electric buses; stops will include popular destinations

electric bus

TARC has begun adding six new all-electric, zero-emission buses along the Fourth Street corridor between downtown and Iroquois Park, stopping at some of the city’s most popular destinations. With the new buses, TARC will have a total of 15 all-electric buses on the road, making it one of the largest electric bus operators in the country.

The new buses, which feature a bike rack for up to three bikes, travel everyday exclusively on Route #4-Fourth Street between downtown and Iroquois Park and also on a section of the route to Strawberry Lane on weekends. They stop at or near Museum Row downtown, the University of Louisville, Speed Museum, Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby Museum, Old Louisville, restaurants, hotels, and much more.

The buses provide cleaner air, fuel conservation and maintenance cost savings. They replace buses that are 16 years old and have traveled more than 600,000 miles. The harmful emissions from the old buses – more than 30,000 pounds each year into the air – will be eliminated with the electric buses. About 60,000 gallons of diesel fuel a year will also be spared.

The buses, a $4.65 million investment, were funded primarily with a $3.3 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration’s Low or No Emission Vehicles Deployment Program. Other federal and local funding covered the remaining costs.

Mark your calendar - street festival at the Muhammad Ali Childhood Home Museum - September 17

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer announced Monday that  the city and Schwinn bicycle company will provide free bicycles to 100 children, who will earn the opportunity by completing Bike Louisville's Bike Sense program at 12 Metro Parks and Recreation Centers.

The program teaches bike safety skills, and several hundred children participated this summer. Bike Louisville will choose 100 children who met the program requirements to receive a bike, helmet and bike lock.

The bikes will be presented at a street festival planned at the Muhammad Ali Childhood Home Museum on Grand Avenue on Sept. 17.

The festival will include music, refreshments and kids' activities. It's an effort to honor the things for which Ali stood.

"We do that by treating others with respect and compassion with all of our interactions, and that's how we build on the legacy of the greatest Muhammad Ali, with the little literally, as I like to say, and the legacy of a great police officer, Joe Martin," Fischer said.

Martin was the police officer who helped the young man, then named Cassius Clay, start boxing. Clay met Martin at the Old Columbia Gym, saying he wanted to beat up the person who stole his bike. Martin told him if that was the case, he should learn to fight. The officer ran a boxing gym.

To enroll in future Bike Sense programs, visit your local Metro Parks community center. Find the community center nearest you by clicking here.

Tips for staying safe in extreme heat

Image of heat: thermometer and fan

Extremely hot weather can cause serious health effects such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke which may lead to death.

This is the time to watch out for elderly or medically fragile friends and neighbors and encourage them:

  • Do not rely on a fan as a primary cooling device during an extreme heat event.
  • Don’t use the stove or oven to cook. That will only make them and their house hotter.
  • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Take cool showers or baths to cool down.
  • Drink plenty of water and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink.
  • Check the local news for health and safety updates regularly.

Seek medical care immediately if you have or someone you know has symptoms of heat illness like muscle cramps, headaches, nausea or vomiting.

For more information on heat safety, visit http://www.crh.noaa.gov/images/pah/pdf/heatsafety.pdf

Louisville is joining cities around the country in partnering with Nextdoor (www.nextdoor.com), the private social network for neighborhoods that is designed to improve city-wide and neighbor-to-neighbor communications.

Louisville Metro Police have been using Nextdoor since April to convey targeted information to residents of neighborhoods that have signed up for the free service.

Now, all of Louisville Metro Government, including the Mayor’s Office, Department of Public Works, the Fire Department and LMPD will use Nextdoor to build stronger, safer communities, working with neighbors to increase safety and strengthen a virtual neighborhood watch.

With Nextdoor, residents can create private neighborhood websites to share information, including neighborhood public safety issues, community events and activities, local services, and even lost pets.

All members must verify they live within the neighborhood before joining. Information shared on Nextdoor is password protected and cannot be accessed by Google or other search engines. Police and city officials cannot access residents’ contact information or content, but can share targeted messages. Visit www.nextdoor.com to sign up.
