District 6 Spotlight: The Healing Place

healing
.
This month’s District 6 Spotlight is on the Healing Place, a local recovery center that has helped over 2,700 men and women successfully return to productive lives in society.

Founded as a homeless shelter in 1989, The Healing Place has become one of the nation's most effective long-term, social model recovery programs. With 65 percent of their alumni remaining sober after one year, the Healing Place’s success rate is five times the national average for recovery facilities.

The success achieved by the Healing Place over the last twenty years allowed them to open a facility specifically for women in 2010. This expansion, located at the intersection of 15th and Hill, is an immensely valuable resource in District Six. I would like to personally thank all those involved in making the Healing Place one of the most effective recovery programs in the country! Keep up the great work!

Dish with David comes to the Hillebrand!

On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of joining resident of the Hillebrand House on 3rd Street for conversation and a healthy breakfast snack. In addition to reminding them to participate in the upcoming events in the neighborhood like Saturday in the Park, I addressed all of their questions and concerns. Below is a picture of our conversation. Thanks to all those who attended!

Making it easier and safer for residents of walking courts in District 6

Recently, I met with officials from Metro Safe along with several neighborhood leaders to discuss concerns over access to pedestrian or walking courts, similar to Ouerbacher Court or Floral Terrace.  To date, MetroSafe has had a system that does not clearly recognize these walking courts as inaccessible to emergency services which has caused confusion and some delayed response times.   Neighborhood leaders like Amy Gasson and Claudette Rego from Central Park West have stepped up with their knowledge of the walking courts in our area and provided a list of these areas to MetroSafe so they can adequately recognize these in our emergency response systems.  We are all a bit safer because of the forward thinking of our neighborhood leaders and MetroSafe, so THANK YOU!

New "Apps" make city government more efficient, accessible

Mayor Greg Fischer recently unveiled the new Mobile311 smart phone application that allows citizens to report concerns, complaints or compliments with a quick click.

Citizens can snap pictures of problems and the image is geocoded and sent directly to Metro Government’s MetroCall 311 center.

“Citizens can interact with their city government by many methods – in person, over the phone, on the web, by Facebook and Twitter and now by smart phone,” Fischer said. “This app is the latest example of innovation at work in Louisville.”

The app is available for free download – search for “311 & MSD” in the smart phone app store or visit www.louisvilleky.gov/mobileapps
