Bike to Work Day – May 20

This Friday, May 20, I’ll be biking to work, and I hope you will join us. Plan to Meet & Ride at Seneca Park in the parking lot near the basketball courts, at 7:00 a.m. Drive your vehicle or bike to Seneca and ride with other riders downtown. All riders must have a helmet. Then join Bike Louisville at Noon at 4th Street Live to meet up with other commuters, learn more about bicycle commuting, visit with vendors and celebrate the bicycle! For more information, please visit: www.bicyclingforlouisville.org or www.louisvilleky.gov/bikelouisville

Bike to Work

Sustainability Story: Bicycle Commuting

Sustainability

While many of us will be bicycling to work on Friday, more and more people are doing that most days.  D9 resident Whit Stodghill is one of those regular bicycle riders.

Whit is a Chaplain and pastoral educator at Norton Healthcare and she bikes to and from her Crescent Hill home on the days she is scheduled to stay all day on the downtown Norton campus.  She says it takes her about 30 minutes to get to her office and about 45 minutes to get back home, with the longer afternoon commute caused by rush hour traffic and the uphill climb back to Crescent Hill.  You might see her on Frankfort Avenue, Mellwood Avenue or Payne Street, among other parts of her daily commute.  She says her motivation for riding the bike to work has more to do with her health and fitness than with sustainability, but she’s glad to keep her car off the road whenever she can.

Whit is happy to see more of Louisville’s roadways making room for bicyclists.  She says drivers go around her without a great deal of bother and she encourages both motorists and cyclists to make more efforts to share the road.  “I get frustrated, as a motorist, when cyclists insist on riding two and three abreast, when they could be sharing the road with automobiles.”  In addition to her commute on Louisville’s streets, Whit loves to ride on the Louisville Loop.  She rides at the Parklands, Chickasaw, Shawnee, Seneca and Cherokee Parks, and enjoys having such a great parks system to take advantage of in Louisville.  Thanks, Whit, for letting us tell your bicycling story.

We’d like to feature your sustainability story - a resident or business doing good things for the environment.  Riding the bus, bicycling, walking, gardening and more - our eNews will feature practices which can benefit all of us.  Send your story to Bill Hollander or Kyle Ethridge

Responsible Recycling Event a HUGE Success

group photo

Thank you for coming out for the Annual D9 FREE Responsible Recycling event last Saturday on River Road. This was the most successful year yet with 450 vehicles dropping off various items to be recycled or reused. Click here to view a photo album from the event. Truckloads of hazardous materials, household items, medical equipment, paper and other items will either be safely disposed of or reused.

There was some confusion regarding the collection or older, non-working TVs, for which we are sorry. We will be attempting to bring a vendor next year that will be able to collect older TVs and CRT monitors. In the meantime, residents may dispose of electronics, including older TVs and CRT monitors, up to three items or systems per visit, at no charge at the Louisville Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue. The center is open Tuesday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. For specifics on what will be collected, please visit: https://louisvilleky.gov/government/public-works/electronics-recycling.

Another BIG thank you to our recycling vendors for participating in this year's event.

Mellwood Tavern in the Works

Rush Inn

From Insider Louisville

The Rush Inn may get new life as Mellwood Tavern

Longtime bar and grill The Rush Inn may finally have a buyer after years on the market.

Louisville residents Briana Clemerson, Scott Crowder and Patrick Gregory have filed a notice in The Courier-Journal that they plan to apply for a liquor license for a business called Mellwood Tavern, located at 1801 Brownsboro Road — the address of The Rush Inn.

Given the name, it seems that the property will continue to house a bar and restaurant.

IL reported more than two years ago that The Rush Inn owner Jeff Rand was looking to sell the 131-year-old building and the business. Back then, his asking price was $545,000.

Jim Harbolt, a Realtor with Gant Hill & Associates who is representing Rand, said the sale is still pending. The trio needs to complete a few stipulations before the sale can go through and is still finalizing financing, he said.

10 Year Solid Waste Management Master Plan Survey

Metro seal

Louisville/Jefferson County residents can help shape the city’s 10-year Solid Waste Master Plan by taking a 5-minute confidential online survey. The survey seeks information about how citizens handle waste and what they pay to dispose of it. Development of the 10-year Solid Waste Master Plan got underway last fall. The plan is focused on Mayor Greg Fischer’s goal of diverting 90 percent of the community’s solid waste away from landfills by the year 2042.
