Pet Wants Grand Opening – March 26

Pet Wants

Pet Wants East Louisville, a mobile service that delivers the company's own proprietary pet food, will soon have a permanent home and a new name. Business owner Lindsey Whalen will host a grand opening Saturday, March 26, at the new Pet Wants storefront at 1718 Frankfort Avenue.

Events will kick off with a "leash-cutting"ceremony with Mayor Greg Fischer at 10am followed by pet pictures with the Easter Bunny until 5pm. There will also be drawings for a free month of food (customers don't have to be present to win) throughout the day.

Whalen opened Pet Wants late last year because she wanted to provide a new fresh, all-natural pet food option for fellow pet lovers in her community.  Pet Wants' carefully developed proprietary pet food is slow-cooked with fresh, all-natural ingredients. The company has their distributor make the food in small batches once per month so every kibble is guaranteed to be fresh and packed with nutrition.

For those who would still like mobile food delivery, Pet Wants on the Avenue delivers to NuLu, the Highlands, Germantown, St. Matthews, Lyndon, Hurstbourne, Middletown, Crescent Hill, Clifton, Brownsboro Road and Prospect.

To order Pet Wants food for your favorite companion, call (502)627-0026, email LWhalen@PetWants.com or visit http://www.petwantseastlouisville.com.

Sustainability Story: Compost

Yard Waste

There are several benefits to composting leaves instead of sending them to the landfill in plastic bags, as we finally quit doing in Jefferson County.  It saves landfill space but it also creates compost.  You can buy some this weekend!

Experienced gardeners understand the value of adding quality organic amendments to the soil for many different reasons. Some of these reasons are to change the soil structure to improve drainage, improve the oxygen levels in and around the roots, and to create a better overall soil structure for plant growth. Another benefit, depending on the type and source of soil amendment, is the level of nutrients the compost can add to the soil for plants to use as food.

compost

Municipal compost is a mixture of leaves, chipped tree limbs, and yard waste from various cities, composted into an earthy, well mixed amendment that any home gardener would be happy to use on their garden. This product has become available because many cities, including Louisville, decided to recycle yard and park waste, rather than throw the stuff into the dump at great cost. The greatest value of compost is in the organic matter, which can act as a nutrient buffer and improve the soil structure for a year or two after application.

Want to learn more about the benefits of compost? Watch this educational video on MetroTV!

Municipal compost is available from Brightside on Saturday, March 26 and on April 30 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Outer Loop Recycling and Disposal Facility, 2673 Outer Loop. Compost fees: $2.50 per bag, $40 per 1 cubic meter scoop

Provide Input to Greater Louisville Master Plan for the Arts

Residents of the Greater Louisville Region are invited to take part in an online survey related to the development of a Master Plan for the Arts. The public is encouraged to share their thoughts, hopes and desires for the future of arts and culture in our community through the completion of a short, anonymous online survey, open now through midnight on April 30. To take the survey, visit http://tiny.cc/louartsplan.

At this early stage of the planning process, input from the public is critical to ensure the creation of a useful master plan that benefits the entire region. The survey covers topics such as your current level of participation in arts-related events, how you would rate current arts and cultural activities in Greater Louisville, and what you'd like to see here in the future. All comments will be considered and used to identify community priorities, which will inform a plan that represents the diverse perspectives in our community.

Questions? Email GreaterLouisvilleArts@gmail.com. For more information or to sign up to receive project news and updates, visit GreaterLouisvilleArts.com. Follow along at Facebook.com/LouisvilleArtsPlan or on Twitter at @LouArtsPlan.
