LIHEAP Funding Deadline Extended to April 30

Income-eligible residents of Louisville now have more time to apply for funding to help with energy bills, thanks to an extension of the deadline for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The former deadline of March 31 was recently pushed back to April 30 by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, which administers the LIHEAP program through a network of 23 Community Action Agencies across the state.

LIHEAP is a federally-funded program that provides assistance to individuals or families struggling to pay their electric, natural gas or other energy bills. The current phase of LIHEAP, called the “Crisis Component”, assist households that are in a home heating crisis and that are facing disconnection from their utility services.  Benefits provided by this program are paid directly to the applicant’s heating vendor.

Residents wishing to apply must have an appointment. Appointments are being scheduled, in person only, at all three LIHEAP offices listed below Mondays through Thursdays between 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Appointments may also be scheduled on Fridays at the Central and South LIHEAP office between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (Note:  The East Office is closed for LIHEAP on Fridays).

Applicants must be Jefferson County residents with a household income at or below 130% of the federal poverty guidelines (e.g. for a household of four, the gross monthly income cannot exceed $2,628.00).  For the Crisis Phase, applicants must have received a brown, disconnection notice from their utility service provider, or must have received an eviction notice if their utilities are included in the rent.

The three LIHEAP offices are as follows:
Central Office -- Urban Government Center, 810 Barret Ave., Room 127, 40204; 502-574-1157
East Office -- Newburg Community Center, 4810 Exeter Ave., 40218; 502-574-1270
(Note:  The East Office is closed on Fridays for LIHEAP)
South Office -- Southwest Government Center, 7219 Dixie Hwy; 502-574-1272

The following documentation must be presented when scheduling an appointment:
1) Picture ID (if available)
2) Most recent LG&E bill (must be a brown bill), or an eviction notice if utilities are included in the rent.

Upon registering for an appointment, residents will receive an appointment slip verifying the appointment date, time and location. For more information, visit here. Individuals who are unable to apply for this program in person may send a representative on their behalf with a note including the applicant’s signature and phone number. Call 574-1157 for more details on how this process works. Residents who are homebound and who are unable to send a representative may call 574-1274.
