Jefferson County Public Schools is considering a proposal that could essentially combine Frost and Stuart middle schools and move them to the Stuart Middle campus and begin to phase out the Valley Prep program at Valley High as early as this fall.
The proposal, unveiled during a JCPS school board work session on Tuesday would entail:
- Moving the Frost Sixth-Grade Academy and Valley Prep to the Stuart Middle School campus. All rising sixth-grade students would attend a separate, small sixth-grade academy (approximately 434 students) on the Stuart campus.
- Rising seventh- and eighth-grade students currently assigned to Valley Prep and Stuart would attend a separate, small seventh- and eighth-grade academy on the Stuart campus (643 students in 2016-17 year and 848 students in the 2017-18 year).
- The sixth-grade academy and seventh- and eighth-grade center would be separate and distinct schools located on the Stuart campus.
- Current seventh graders at Valley Prep, who will be eighth graders next school year, would stay at Valley Prep with their teachers to finish the 2016-17 school year.
JCPS will host a series of community meetings on the proposal beginning next week. All meetings will be held at 6 p.m.
- Monday, March 14: Carter Elementary School
- Tuesday, March 15: Valley High School
- Wednesday, March 16: Academy @ Shawnee

The Kentucky
Transportation Cabinet announced contract crews will begin work the week on the Fairdale Roundabout.
The construction involves two T-shaped intersections along the
West Manslick Road and Mount Holly Road corridor (mile points 1.2 to 1.5) will
be replaced by a four-way intersection with a roundabout. The roundabout
will eliminate the need for traffic signals and allow vehicles to move
continuously through the intersection.
Mitchell Hill Road will be realigned southward at West Manslick
Road to meet with Fairdale Road, at the point where West Manslick Road becomes
Mount Holly Road, to create the four-way intersection.
According to the Cabinet, lane closures will be necessary during
construction but are not permitted from 6:00am-9:00am and 3:00pm-6:00pm In
addition, the Fairdale Road approach will be closed for up to 15 days during
later phases of work.

Adding more resources to help those who overdose from heroin.
Officials are hopeful that more training sessions at a local health department will help save lives.
Naloxone, which is also referred to as Narcan, is used when someone overdoses from heroin and other opioid drug.
“In naloxone there's an opiate overdose reversal medication that can bring someone out of an overdose and save their life,” said Russ Read, Co-Founder of the Kentucky Harm Reduction Coalition.
Training sessions will be held continuously on Tuesday, March 15 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Department of Public Health and Wellness, 400 E. Gray Street.

creative industry organizations
Louisville Metro
Government will begin accepting External Agency Fund applications on Thursday,
February 25, 2016 for FY17 (July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017). These General Funded
grants are awarded to non-governmental, or "external” agencies, that
contribute to the city's cultural, social and economic vitality.
All agencies wishing to submit an application are required to have at
least one representative participate in a mandatory orientation webinar.
There will be a live webinar held on Feb. 25 at 10:30 a.m. The
session is approximately 90 minutes and will cover eligibility, the application
process, and provide instructions for the on-line application. Interested

The grants are available for Social Services programs, administered by the

Creative Industries programs, administered by the Louisville Metro Department
of Economic Development. The External Agency Funds are awarded annually to
non-profit organizations offering programs or services in Louisville/Jefferson
County that align with the Mayor's and departments' strategic goals.
Applications will be reviewed by two External Agency Fund panels, which include
Metro Council members and community members, and those recommendations will be
included in Mayor Fischer’s recommended FY17 Metro budget.
For the Social Services Funding Program, qualified non-profits committed to
providing services that achieve meaningful outcomes for Louisville citizens in
the following key areas are encouraged to apply:
·
Decreasing homelessness
·
Increasing household financial stability
·
Increasing youth, teen, and/or young adult
engagement in quality programming; or

neighborhoods that have experienced disinvestment
- Opportunities for citizens to access and engage with
visual, performing and other arts experiences
Louisville Metro Government employs a competitive granting strategy and

goals and outcomes.

Since 2007, Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D-24)
has called upon the community to remember the brave service men and women who
are still serving our country in some of the most dangerous spots in the world
by helping ease their tour of duty in a special way.
“For
ten years, my goal has been not to forget any solider in need of our help and
support,” said Flood. “This year along with our sponsors, I am so pleased
to announce the community of Metro Louisville will have a chance to honor our
brave men and women.”
Valentine’s
Day is the official kickoff of the “Doing Our Part from the Heart”
Campaign. Over the next eight weeks, Flood and the community will collect
toiletries, snacks and other items to send to our military. Simple items
such as soap, eye drops, bug repellent, candy, and other personal items make a
huge impact for troops serving in remote locations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Joining
Flood, as sponsors of the 2016 campaign are the Okolona Business Association,
the Okolona Fire Department, Republic Bank, Scheller’s Fitness and Cycling and
Jackson- Hewitt Tax Service. The campaign runs through the end of March.
If
you cannot donate items and wish to make cash contribution to help cover the
cost of shipping, Republic Bank continues its partnership by setting up an
account to accept all monetary donations to cover postage for the items going
overseas. Every package cost $16.75 to send. Make sure to note on
the check “From the Heart” account.
“We
are very fortunate to have so many people in our community who help us out with
donations,” said Flood. It shows that we care and again is another
reminder as to why Louisville is a compassionate city

Mayor Greg Fischer has launched his SummerWorks jobs program
for 2016 and is urging every company to hire or sponsor jobs for youth.
"We want it to be the business culture of our city that every company,
large and small, hires or sponsors summer jobs for youth," Fischer said.
New companies such as Humana and Kindred Healthcare are joining the effort
for 2016 and UPS and other companies are increasing their commitment. Also, a
new website - SummerWorks.org -- makes it easier for
youth, employers and supporters to sign up and be involved. See a short
video about the new website.
Working closely with Jefferson County Public Schools, Fischer
said there will be a stronger focus this year on placing students in jobs
that match up with what they are learning in school and jobs in the key
business sectors the city is focused on growing such as technology,
healthcare and advanced manufacturing.

Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District is offering free soil testing for Louisville Metro homeowners – limit 2 tests per household!
Although fertilizer, lime, and other amendments can be very helpful in establishing happy, healthy plants and lawns, they pose a risk if not used properly. Excess fertilizer and chemicals wash away with rainwater and pollute our local streams and waterways. The first guideline of responsible fertilizer application is to take a soil sample and have it analyzed to determine fertilizer needs.
The Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is offering a soils test incentive program to offset the cost for Louisville Metro residents. The SWCD will provide up to 2 vouchers per household to cover the processing fee for a standard soils test. People wishing to participate in this incentive program must request the soils test voucher(s) from the Conservation District office. Email your voucher request to: joy.edwards@ky.nacdnet.net The email should include your name, physical address, phone number and if you want one or two vouchers. The soil vouchers along with you r soil sample should be taken to the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service at 810 Barret Avenue for testing.
