Let's All #TakeAStandLou

The Coalition for the Homeless has created a city-wide campaign to raise awareness about Louisville’s homeless and get more people involved in solving the problem. Pictures from across the city were taken in support of this great movement and publicized on Thursday February 18th.

Ninety percent of the homeless population in Louisville are single-parent families or young people who just aren’t making enough to pay their rent. Many people don’t realize that they interact with the homeless on a regular basis. There are families at your kids school, your job, and in your own family who are forced to live out of their car, because they have no where else to go. People who are living through tough situations in a tough economic environment.

In fact, of the 7,380 homeless people in Louisville last year, 904 were veterans and 1,362 were children.

Councilman David James and the District 6 office are joining the fight against homelessness in Louisville!!!

Severe Weather Awareness Week

yididky

Day 1:Severe Weather Watches & Warning General Information:

Thunderstorms affect a smaller area compared to a winter storm or a hurricane. Despite their small size, ALL THUNDERSTORMS CAN BE DANGEROUS! Situational Awareness at work, and at home is important to keep yourself, your coworkers, and your families safe!

Day 2:Survive a Tornado:

If you’re inside a solid structure/building:

Get to the lowest level and most central part of the structure possible

Stay away from windows

Stay away from outer walls

If you’re outside with no shelter or vehicle nearby:

Lie in an area noticeably lower than the level of the roadway and cover your head with your arms and a blanket, coat or other cushion if possible.

Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You are safer in a low, flat location.

Never try to outrun a tornado.

Watch out for debris. Flying debris causes most fatalities and injuries.

Day 3:FLOODS:

More people drown in their cars than anywhere else during a flood. It only takes 6 INCHES of moving water to knock you down. Just 2 FEET of water will move a vehicle, even a SUV.

So Turn Around, Don’t Drown!

Create a Communications Plan with your family

Assemble a 3 Day Emergency Kit

Prepare your home

Prepare your family and pets to evacuate

Charge essential electronics and backup batteries

Leave before the flood water arrives at your door

Day 4:Thunderstorms, Wind and Hail; Imagine what they could do to YOU!

During a thunder, hail, or wind storm:

Go to a safe place immediately (a sturdy building (ideal) or car)

Stay away from trees

If there’s no shelter, crouch down in an open area.  Don’t be a tall lightning rod, get small, and turn yourself into a ball.

Stay out of and away from water.  Do not stand in puddles.

Avoid metal objects

Wait at least 30 minutes after the last observed lightning strike or thunder before going back outside.

Day 5:Prepare for and Recover from Severe Weather

Do you and your loved ones have “GO BAGS” ready?

Preparation:

Have a go bag ready for everyone and place them in a pre-planned, accessible location.

Have a family communication plan, that’s clearly communicated and reviewed with everyone.

Stay Safe:

Wear sturdy boots, gloves or other needed personal protective equipment.

Watch for fires, washed out roads, contaminated buildings and /or water, gas leaks, broken glass, damaged and/or downed electrical lines/wiring and slippery floors.

Aiding the Injured:

Administer first aid to the level you have been trained, and seek medical attention for any injured person following a disaster.

Check for injuries. Do not attempt to move a seriously injured person unless they are in immediate danger of death or further injury.

Maintain body temperature with blankets, being sure the victim doesn’t become overheated.

Never try to feed or provide liquids to an unconscious person.

Health:

Be aware of exhaustion. Don’t try to do too much at once. Set priorities and pace yourself.

Drink plenty of clean water. Eat well. Get enough rest.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and clean water often when working in debris.

Talk to someone and seek professional help for disaster-related stress.

Prepare for takeoff! Red Bull Flugtag is coming to Louisville

fhsfhs

Red Bull Flugtag is making its inaugural debut in Louisville this summer, challenging wannabe pilots to push the limits of human flight.

Since 1991, Red Bull Flugtag (which translates to “Flying Day” in German) has made stops around the world, challenging competitors to build and pilot homemade, human-powered flying machines. With the backdrop of the Ohio River, the outrageous flying competition will take place at Waterfront Park on Saturday, August 27th. The event has attracted up to 100,000 spectators in other cities.

The application phase starts today and calls for teams of carpenters, athletes, designers, engineers, entertainers and everyone in between to attempt to turn their dreams of flight into reality. Five-member teams of aspiring aviators and courageous craftsmen and women can apply for a chance to compete at Red Bull Flugtag 2016 by submitting flying-machine plans to www.RedBullFlugtag.com. The deadline to submit craft designs is May 1st.

Applications will be reviewed, and teams will be selected by end of May. On August 27th, competitors will take the plunge off the 22-foot-high flight deck in front of thousands of roaring fans as they attempt to break the 258-foot distance record, set in 2013.

While the sky may be the limit on creativity, there are a few flight regulations. First, all flying machines must be entirely human-powered (no external sources or stored power, so forget about the slingshots, catapults or anything besides your own burliness). Additionally, all crafts must be less than 24 feet wide, and must weigh no more than 440 pounds (including the pilot).

Applying to participate in Red Bull Flugtag is free. Pilots and participants must be 18 or older. For more information, including applications, rules, photos and video footage from past Red Bull Flugtag events, visit www.RedBullFlugtag.com.
