Communication Legislation Paves the Way for Google Fiber & Broadband Internet

fiber

In a decision compared to the advent of electricity and the telephone, Metro Council ignored pressure from two major U.S. telecommunication companies and approved a pair of measures that supporters believe will bring Louisville residents faster online speeds.

By a 23-0 vote Thursday evening, members backed an ordinance that gives ultra-fast Internet service providers such as Google Fiber easier access to city rights-of-way, or in this case utility poles.here:

External Agency Fund Application Process Begins

external

Louisville Metro Department of Community Services (LMCS) administers the Social Services funding program, and Louisville Metro Department of Economic Development, Louisville Forward, administers the Arts and Cultural Attractions funding program. The External Agency Funds are awarded annually to non-profit organizations offering programs or services in Louisville/Jefferson County that align with the departments’ missions and strategic goals.

Qualified non-profits committed to providing services that achieve meaningful outcomes for Louisville citizens in the following key areas are encouraged to apply:

  • Decreasing homelessness;
  • Increasing household financial stability;
  • Increasing youth, teen, and/or young adult engagement
  • Increasing access to services and resources for a targeted population.

An Arts and Culture agency is a non-profit committed to providing arts and cultural attractions to the Louisville community. Eligible arts and cultural agencies should ensure that they align with one of the primary focus areas:

  • Providing quality arts and cultural attractions to all in our community;
  • Increasing awareness and appreciation of various arts mediums; or
  • Broaden and diversify the demographics of those who participate in arts and cultural attractions.

Louisville Metro Government employs a competitive granting strategy and strives to award funding to agencies that demonstrate measurable positive impact in the community and are good stewards of taxpayer dollars. Successful grantees will be required to report on their success in meeting goals and outcomes.

For more information, as well as a listing of previous recipients, visit http://louisvilleky.gov/government/external-agency-fund.

LMPD 3rd Division Tips: Do NOT Leave Cars Running

lmpd

While we know it is extremely cold, to leave your car running and unattended is very dangerous and against the law. In the past week, we have had 6 vehicles stolen in our 3rd Division community where they were left running to warm up and someone jumped in them and took off.  All it takes is a second for someone to do this. On January 18th, we have had 2 more stolen that were left running to warm up or stay warm.

This is dangerous due to the fact that someone stealing their vehicle could injure someone else when they flee with the car, or later when an officer attempts to stop them.  Not to mention the stress of having your vehicle stolen, belongings inside etc. It is simply not worth it to lose your car for a reason like this. Please keep that in mind this winter season.

BBB Valentine's Day Scams!

bbb

BBB Warns: It’s Valentine’s Day! Is Your New Love a Con Artist?

It’s February and love is in the air! But if your new boo is someone you met online, he or she could be a scammer… especially if you haven’t yet met in person. BBB is warning those who are “looking for love” to be wary year-round, but especially around Valentine’s Day, when it may be tempting to let your guard down!

A relationship scam starts simply: You meet online at a dating site or on social media. Things click immediately and the “relationship” progresses quickly; you email, talk on the phone, trade pictures. Finally, you make plans to meet… maybe he or she has even mentioned marriage plans. But as the relationship gets stronger, the requests start to change. Your new love asks you to wire them money… it’s not much at first, but then the requests keep coming: their daughter needs emergency surgery, they need airfare to come for a visit, etc. The payback promises are empty; the money’s gone and, soon, so are they.

Don’t let your emotions get in the way! Be wary of any dating prospect who:

·        Always has an excuse to postpone meeting. Someone really interested in a relationship will want to see you in person.

·        Be wary of someone who claims to be from this country but is currently traveling, living, or working abroad (perhaps Military).

·        Has a photo that doesn't match his/her profile: Lots of people fib in their dating profile, adding an inch of height or subtracting 10 pounds. But be on the lookout for big discrepancies. For example, a scammer may describe their fake persona as blonde but uses a photo of a brunette.

·        Has a suspicious Facebook profile. Scammers often use the names and photos of real people to create fake FB profiles. Their profiles tend to have few friends and lots of grammatical errors. Check to see when they joined. Recent pages are another red flag.

·        Asks you for money or credit card information. Scammers often claim an emergency like a sick relative or stolen wallet, and will ask you to wire money.

To avoid losing money to scammers, you should NEVER:

·        Send money to someone you haven’t met in person.

·        Provide banking information to people you don’t know.

·        Send money for an emergency situation without confirming that it’s a real emergency.

·        Send funds from a check in your account until it officially clears (which can take a week or more).

Always:

·        Stop and think – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

·        Know the person you are sending money to - people who you have met.

·        Be suspicious of someone who asks you to send money for an emergency by wire, prepaid money card, or gift card.
