On January 21, 2016, Louisville residents Qiana Young and partner Twanna Jenning's started a "Water Drive" movement throughout the city in hopes to collect enough water to help the residents of Flint, Michigan. This water drive project was designed to assist Flint families in their extreme time of need due to the water crisis that has effected the entire city!
"The plan for this water drive is to help the people, especially the children and babies who live in the town", Qiana said in an over the phone interview. "Once the water has been collected, I want to go into the neighborhoods to personally deliver the water so that people do not have to stand in another line to get what they need".
The goal for the drive is to collect 1,000 cases of water to fill up a tractor trailer truck. And depending on the number of children in each household, at least 2 to 3 cases of water will be given to the citizens of Flint.
Residents in Flint, Michigan have been unable to drink the local water because of the high levels of lead discovered in the water. The water crisis began in April of 2014, and has made top news since the start of this new year. Everyone who was exposed to the water are in danger of lead poisoning. There is no safe level of lead in the body, and the impacts of lead are considered most severe on the developing brains and nervous systems of children and fetuses making them more susceptible to lead poisoning than adults. The health effects of this water crisis include: skin lesions, hair loss, high levels of lead in the blood, vision loss, memory loss, depression and anxiety.
The deadline for the "Water Drive" is on February 21st. All water can be taken to 2 separate locations:
1. Mt. Hermon Christian Church 951 South Floyd Street
Pastor B.K. Litton
Monday- Friday 11am - 5pm.
2. Clean Kutz Barber Shop 1165 South 4th Street
Owner: Juan Withers
Tuesday - Saturday 10am -5pm.
If you cannot make it to one of the 2 drop off sites your water donations can be picked by placing a call to:
Qiana Young at 502-389-3832 or
Twanna Jennings at 502-656-2516
A special THANK YOU to Qiana Young & Twanna Jennings for their brave efforts to help the men, women and children of Flint, Michigan.

Wheels clients across the country. Young people who sign up at DoSomething.org/loveletters and report back

Online applications for the Louisville Creating Affordable Residences for
Economic Success (Louisville CARES) revolving loan program are now being
accepted from developers who are building affordable multi-family rental
housing to address a significant need for workforce housing in Louisville.
Developers can also apply to the Louisville CARES program to add affordable
units to market rate multi-family housing developments. Louisville CARES funds
will be deployed as loans that can be layered with other types of project
financing.
Louisville CARES is intended to address “cost burdening”, a situation in
which a family spends more than 30% of its income for housing and utilities. In
Louisville, approximately 60,000 families currently experience cost burdening.
Louisville CARES is being overseen by Louisville Metro’s Office of Housing
& Community Development which is a part of Develop Louisville housed under
Louisville Forward. The Louisville Affordable Housing Trust Fund will
participate in making lending decisions as part of the Louisville CARES loan review
committee.
The Louisville CARES was developed to address the needs for affordable,
multi-family housing for households making 80% or less of the Area Median
Income (around $51,300 for a family of four). Louisville CARES consists of an
$11 million revolving loan fund to provide gap financing to developers building
new affordable multi-family rental housing or incorporating affordable units
into market rate projects, and a $1 million land acquisition initiative through
which Louisville Metro will offer land near employment centers an incentive for
multi-family workforce rental housing development. The loan fund itself creates
approximately 750 new affordable units, but through housing filtering effects,
will positively affect 750 additional households for a total of 1,500 units.
Louisville CARES intends to create development that will be built to
nationally-recognized sustainable design standard such as Passive House, Energy
Star, or LEED. It incentives projects that will incorporate measures to help
mitigate the urban heat island effect by exceeding tree canopy requirements and
including white or reflective roof design.
Applicants should visit Louisville Metro Housing & Community
Development’s website at louisvilleky.gov/louisvillecares
to access complete application materials.
