Look Alive Louisville

Focus on Road Safety

The safety tips below are excerpted by permission from the website of the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center. They provide clear guidelines for how people on foot, on bikes and in cars should Look Alive to protect their safety and the safety of other road users.

Pedestrians

Pedestrians

Use your eyes to Look Alive

  • Don't assume vehicles will stop. Make eye contact with drivers. Don't just look at the vehicle.
  • Even when the signal is in your favor, look before you cross the road.
  • Look left, right, and left again before crossing a street.
  • Look for turning vehicles

Be predictable

  • Cross streets only at marked crosswalks or intersections, if possible
  • Obey traffic signals such as WALK/DON'T WALK signs.
  • Always walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic.
Riding in bike lane

Bicyclists

Ride with traffic and follow rules of the road

  • Riding with the flow of traffic, not against it, makes getting hit from behind extremely unlikely.
  • Ride in a straight line, not in and out between cars.
  • Use hand signals when turning and stopping
  • Obey traffic signs, signals and lane markings, and yield when appropriate.

Be predictable and visible

  •  Don't ride on the sidewalk It puts you at much greater risk of being hit by a motorist at every driveway and intersection because they don't expect you to be there.
  • When riding in the dark, use headlights, taillights and reflectors. Also wear reflective and/or brightly colored clothing.

Use your eyes to Look Alive

  • Watch for motorists at every intersection and driveway.
  • Watch for motorists who may turn left across your path.
  • Make eye contact with drivers to assure each of you is aware of the other.
Drive safe

Motorists

Look Alive

  • Scan the road and sides of the road ahead for potential pedestrians and bicyclists, especially when you're turning.
  • Do not use cellphones or other potentially distracting devices while driving.

Yield

  •  Yield to pedestrians at all crosswalks and when making turns.
  • Do not block or park in crosswalks.
  • Remain behind the stop bar (wide stripe) while waiting for traffic signals.

Be patient

  • Never pass a vehicle that is stopped for pedestrians.
  • Obey speed limits.
  • Come to a complete stop at STOP signs.

Works People of the Year

Stacy Keith

Traffic Engineering Supervisor Stacy Keith and Bulk Waste Manager Richmond Booker (both pictured at left) were chosen as the 2015 Public Works Employees of the Year. Director Vanessa Burns said Keith showed the kind of personal initiative that is key to the success of our workforce development efforts. After setting aside studying efforts for a time to start a family, Keith got back to it and earned her Professional Engineer certification. Burns said Booker was recognized as someone who tackles any task put before him, not matter the difficulty. "It gets done. It gets handled," the director said.
