PRP Fire District Recognition

adfadfafdfa

Wednesday, Councilman David Yates joined Councilwoman Cindi Fowler and David Nicklies of Nicklies Development and Rebecca Jackson with Crusade for Children in recognizing the Pleasure Ridge Park Fire District for their dedication to our Southwest Community. Nicklies Development fabricated a special PRP Firefighter Bench and a 30 foot United States of America Flag to be flown on an 80 foot tall poll outside of the Valley Commons Shopping Center in Valley Station. Thank you to Chief Vincent Smith and his wonderful group of professional firefighters that protect our community every day. We hope this small token of thanks is shared by all members of our brave fire protection district.

Leaf Drop-Off Service at Sun Valley Community Center

leaf

Louisville Metro residents have three good options for disposal of falling leaves this autumn. The best option is a “Love ‘em and Leave ‘em” approach that leads to healthier yards as described below.

Other choices, in order of preference, include reusable containers and compostable containers.

As a last resort the Solid Waste Management Division of Public Works is offering a free leaf drop-off service.

WHEN: November 10 through December 5 from Tuesday through Saturday.

  • Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

WHERE: Sun Valley Community Center - 10500 Lower River Road (corner of Bethany Lane)

Drop-off will not be available on November 26 and 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only loose leaves will be accepted. They will be turned into compost and used in mulching projects throughout the city. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.

This is the first leaf season since enforcement of an update to the Yard Waste Container Regulation went into effect on January 1, 2015. The update requires that yard waste be disposed of in reusable or compostable containers instead of regular plastic bags.

The drop-off service will complement methods citizens used successfully to comply with the regulation through the planting and growing seasons. Residents are urged to consider one of the following disposal methods before using the drop-off service:

Best: For a healthier lawn, mulch leaves with a lawnmower and let them settle into the turf system along with grass clippings and trimmings as a natural fertilizer and weed deterrent. Get more information on this Love ‘em and Leave ‘em approach at www.lelelouisville.com.

Next Best: Place yard waste in reusable containers no larger than 40 gallon capacity that have handles (old style trash cans) to reduce the need for continual purchase of single-use bags. A limited number of cans are available for in-person-only sale at our Solid Waste Management Services office at 600 Meriwether Avenue. The cost is $10 per can and must be paid by check.

Still Good: Place yard waste in paper bags designed for yard waste collection or in compostable plastic bags that meet ASTM D6400 standards. A limited number of paper bags are available at no charge at any of our Staffed Recycling Centers or at the Solid Waste Management Services office at 600 Meriwether Avenue.

Helpful Hint: The number of containers needed for large volumes of leaves can be reduced dramatically by mowing or shredding the leaves before collecting them.

Free Junk Drop-Off Event

junk

A free bulk waste and junk drop-off event for all Jefferson County residents will be held on Sunday, November 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Waste Management Outer Loop Landfill, 2673 Outer Loop. Now is the time to get rid of bulky items not accepted by regular garbage collection such as appliances, furniture and mattresses. Residents are asked to separate metal items from other junk. The metal is recycled, saving valuable space in the landfill. Freon will also be properly removed from appliances.

Items that will not be accepted during the drop-off event include yard waste (grass, limbs, leaves, etc.), hazardous materials, paint, tires and commercial trash. The event is in addition to regular bulk waste disposal available throughout the year at the Waste Reduction Center located at 636 Meriwether Avenue. Up to three household items, are accepted free of charge during regular operating hours Tuesday - Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Materials such as oil and lead-based paints, lawn fertilizers, batteries and household chemicals may be taken to Louisville Metro’s Household Hazardous Materials Collection Center, known as HAZ BIN, located at 7501 Grade Lane. The center is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no charge for Louisville residents for HAZ BIN services. The junk disposal day is a partnership between the Louisville Metro Division of Solid Waste Management and Waste Management of Kentucky.

Where Do You Vote?

vote

Many precinct polling locations have changed in fact, twenty-five across Jefferson County are being moved for the November 3rd General Election; mostly for reasons related to deficiencies at the former precinct location in the May primary, such as not having enough parking or accessibility issues, county election officials have announced.  In some cases, the new locations are more centrally located within the precinct.

Everyone in Jefferson County can check voter registration status and find out his or her November 3 voting location here: http://ags2.lojic.org/WhereDoIVote/ .

Individuals who will be out of the county on Election Day may vote early at the Urban County Government Center , 810 Barret Avenue,  Monday through Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, now through November 2,  and on Saturdays, October 24 and 31, from  9:00am-2:00pm.  More information about absentee voting is here: Absentee Voting

BBB October 2015 Hot Topics

bbb

See the latest scams in BBB’s October 2015 Hot Topics

1.    Protect yourself from identity theft! Attend BBB’s FREE document shredding and electronic recycling event on October 17, 2015 from 6 am to NOON at 12501 Shelbyville Rd, Louisville, in the Kroger parking lot. Bring up to 4 large boxes or bags of documents for shredding. Bring these items for electronic recycling: Cell phones, cell phone batteries, circuit boards, copper yokes, CPU chips, DVD/CD Drives, floppy disks, gold connector ends, hard drives, laptops, laptop batteries, memory cards, modems/routers, networking equipment, PC towers, and electronic power supply cables.

2.    BBB is hearing from local consumers who say they are receiving phone calls from the "CEO of the prize patrol of the Better Business Bureau." The scammer tells the consumer that he/she has won a BBB Sweepstakes and they have a check for them. This is a SCAM! Don’t give any personal information!

3.    Scammers are using Louisville Water Company’s name to take money from local residents. The caller tells the resident that their account is delinquent, and asks for a credit card number to pay what is owed. Louisville Water Company is not making these calls.

4.    Beware of a local CPR Certification Scam. The scammer, who comes to your home offering training for CPR certification, says the certification is through the American Heart Association, but AHA says that’s not how it works. The victim pays cash, and is told the paperwork will be submitted to AHA, but it is never submitted. For more on CPR certification by AHA, go to www.heart.org/cpr or call 1-877-AHA-4CPR.

5.    Beware of Used Vehicle Scams on Craigslist. A local couple spotted some “unbelievable deals,” but after they came across the same story of a widowed lady selling her daughter’s car because her husband and daughter were killed by a drunk driver, and she had to sell her daughter’s car because of memories, they figured out the “unbelievable deals” were a scam.

6.    Don’t fall for a rental scams on housesforrent.us. Renters find major deals on great homes. The “owner” is out of town and wants a security deposit wired to them. The ad looks legitimate and is often copied from a real ad. The renter ends up losing the deposit, and has no place to live.

7.    Beware of ransomware on your cell phone. A local consumer says a pop up appeared on his phone, so he clicked on it. The pop up told him he was unauthorized to use a website, then he was locked out of the internet. The scammers demanded $500 to unlock it. Beware of what you click on!

8.    If you get a call saying your computer has a security issue, hang up! Local consumers continue to fall for these computer scams. The scammers, who often use “techy” names or pretend to be from Microsoft or Google, say they can fix the problem for a fee. They take your money, log into your computer remotely, then add malware to your computer to steal your identity.

9.    Many businesses are marketing Pink Ribbon products and services to support a cure for breast cancer. BBB reminds you to research donation claims before making a purchase. Identify the charity receiving the donation and find out what percentage of the donation actually goes to the cause. Be cautious of any solicitations over the phone. To check out a charity go to www.bbb.org/charity.

10.  Do not get spooked by Halloween Boutiques! Many of these shops and online stores are seasonal. To avoid being haunted, ask the company for its physical address and phone number. Check out the company at www.bbb.org. Be sure you understand the refund and exchange policy, shipping charges, and provide credit card information only on a secure site.
