New Section of Southwest Louisville Loop Open

New Section of Louisville Loop Now Open

2.66-mile segment in southwest Louisville newest construction in seven years

The newest section of the Louisville Loop extends from Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing to the Mill Creek Generating Station in southwest Louisville. “The Louisville Loop encourages wellness and connects people to their work, businesses, historical landmarks and neighborhoods.

The Louisville Loop is a 100-mile paved shared-use path encircling the city of Louisville. It’s the first new addition to the Ohio River Levee Trail section in seven years.

The Ohio River Levee Trail section now stretches almost 26 miles from the Big 4 Bridge east of downtown Louisville, through downtown; west Louisville and the historic Portland neighborhood; Lannan, Chickasaw and Shawnee parks; and then through Rubbertown, Greenwood, Pleasure Ridge Park and Valley Station before connecting with Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing and the new segment. With this new section complete and an additional segment added in the Parklands of Floyd’s Fork in east Louisville last year, almost 40 percent of the Loop is complete. When completed, the Louisville Loop will pass within a mile of the majority of the population and connect directly to some of the largest employment centers in the city.

Planning for this new segment began in spring 2009, when the Kentuckiana Planning and Development Agency and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet secured funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Design and construction of the 10-foot wide asphalt path cost $1.218 million. Local firms Qk4 (design) and Louisville Paving (construction) performed the work on the new section. The project also includes a new trailhead near the Mill Creek Generating Station that includes a parking area, with accessible parking spaces; a drinking fountain, bike racks, benches, trash receptacles, Louisville Loop signage/wayfinding information and even a TARC bus turnaround. "The Louisville Loop has already shown itself to be a tremendous asset to our community and the completion of this latest segment shows our commitment to continuing to find new, dynamic ways to connect our neighborhoods," Fowler said.  "I look forward to the work ahead to complete the project and finally realize the vision of the Louisville Loop, as well as the promise it holds for our city."

Where Do You Vote?

vote

Many precinct polling locations have changed in fact, twenty-five across Jefferson County are being moved for the November 3rd General Election; mostly for reasons related to deficiencies at the former precinct location in the May primary, such as not having enough parking or accessibility issues, county election officials have announced.  In some cases, the new locations are more centrally located within the precinct.

Everyone in Jefferson County can check voter registration status and find out his or her November 3 voting location here: http://ags2.lojic.org/WhereDoIVote/ .

Individuals who will be out of the county on Election Day may vote early at the Urban County Government Center , 810 Barret Avenue,  Monday through Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, now through November 2,  and on Saturdays, October 24 and 31, from  9:00am-2:00pm.  More information about absentee voting is here: Absentee Voting

LG&E Home Energy Analysis

lge

We know you care, so be energy aware

October marks the 25th annual National Energy Awareness Month, also referred to as Energy Action Month, which was created to encourage government and other organizations to emphasize and promote the importance of managing and sustaining the country's vital energy resources. By using energy wisely and more efficiently, we can all do our part to contribute to the nation's prosperity and security. LG&E and KU offers some simple ways to help waste less energy, improve efficiency and save some green:

·         Get a Home Energy Analysis – find out where you might be losing energy and what improvements to make. Schedule an on-site analysis or perform an online version before cold temps set in.

·         Make sure your furnace filter is clean – dirty ones make your system work harder, and that takes more energy.

·         Seal around windows and doors – eliminating air leaks is a great way to reduce energy loss.

And, if you have an older model refrigerator or freezer, you can improve energy efficiency by replacing it with a newer model, which could be eligible for a rebate. Thanks to LG&E and KU’s Fridge and Freezer Recycling program, the company will haul your old one away (as long as it's full size, still in working condition and easily accessible) and give you $50.

BBB October 2015 Hot Topics

bbb

See the latest scams in BBB’s October 2015 Hot Topics

1.    Protect yourself from identity theft! Attend BBB’s FREE document shredding and electronic recycling event on October 17, 2015 from 6 am to NOON at 12501 Shelbyville Rd, Louisville, in the Kroger parking lot. Bring up to 4 large boxes or bags of documents for shredding. Bring these items for electronic recycling: Cell phones, cell phone batteries, circuit boards, copper yokes, CPU chips, DVD/CD Drives, floppy disks, gold connector ends, hard drives, laptops, laptop batteries, memory cards, modems/routers, networking equipment, PC towers, and electronic power supply cables.

2.    BBB is hearing from local consumers who say they are receiving phone calls from the "CEO of the prize patrol of the Better Business Bureau." The scammer tells the consumer that he/she has won a BBB Sweepstakes and they have a check for them. This is a SCAM! Don’t give any personal information!

3.    Scammers are using Louisville Water Company’s name to take money from local residents. The caller tells the resident that their account is delinquent, and asks for a credit card number to pay what is owed. Louisville Water Company is not making these calls.

4.    Beware of a local CPR Certification Scam. The scammer, who comes to your home offering training for CPR certification, says the certification is through the American Heart Association, but AHA says that’s not how it works. The victim pays cash, and is told the paperwork will be submitted to AHA, but it is never submitted. For more on CPR certification by AHA, go to www.heart.org/cpr or call 1-877-AHA-4CPR.

5.    Beware of Used Vehicle Scams on Craigslist. A local couple spotted some “unbelievable deals,” but after they came across the same story of a widowed lady selling her daughter’s car because her husband and daughter were killed by a drunk driver, and she had to sell her daughter’s car because of memories, they figured out the “unbelievable deals” were a scam.

6.    Don’t fall for a rental scams on housesforrent.us. Renters find major deals on great homes. The “owner” is out of town and wants a security deposit wired to them. The ad looks legitimate and is often copied from a real ad. The renter ends up losing the deposit, and has no place to live.

7.    Beware of ransomware on your cell phone. A local consumer says a pop up appeared on his phone, so he clicked on it. The pop up told him he was unauthorized to use a website, then he was locked out of the internet. The scammers demanded $500 to unlock it. Beware of what you click on!

8.    If you get a call saying your computer has a security issue, hang up! Local consumers continue to fall for these computer scams. The scammers, who often use “techy” names or pretend to be from Microsoft or Google, say they can fix the problem for a fee. They take your money, log into your computer remotely, then add malware to your computer to steal your identity.

9.    Many businesses are marketing Pink Ribbon products and services to support a cure for breast cancer. BBB reminds you to research donation claims before making a purchase. Identify the charity receiving the donation and find out what percentage of the donation actually goes to the cause. Be cautious of any solicitations over the phone. To check out a charity go to www.bbb.org/charity.

10.  Do not get spooked by Halloween Boutiques! Many of these shops and online stores are seasonal. To avoid being haunted, ask the company for its physical address and phone number. Check out the company at www.bbb.org. Be sure you understand the refund and exchange policy, shipping charges, and provide credit card information only on a secure site.
