Paving in D9

paving

Repaving work continues in District 9.  Next week and into the week of August 24, crews will be repaving Garden Drive from Lexington Road to Beals Branch Drive, Beals Branch Drive from Garden Drive to the dead end and Cherokee Gardens Road from Beals Branch Drive to Pee Wee Reese Road.

In the last few days, portions of Payne Street, South Ewing Avenue, Saunders Avenue and the alley behind Walgreens between South Ewing and Keats Avenue, all in Clifton, were repaved.  That followed paving on South Hite Avenue in Crescent Hill and Country Club Road, Lindsay Avenue, North Hite Avenue, Pryor Avenue and Drescher Bridge Avenue in Clifton Heights.

Additional paving on Meridian near St. Matthews, more of North Hite in Clifton Heights, Mockingbird Valley Road, and other streets has been funded and will be scheduled in the future.

Please be careful around the construction crews!

Crime Prevention and Neighborhood Watch

LMPD

Our last D 9 Community Conversation featured LMPD officers and concerns about crime in our neighborhoods.  I’ve heard similar concerns at neighborhood meetings in recent weeks.  Here are just a couple of tips from the meeting.

First, many thefts from cars and homes are the result of unsecured and unattended property.  Lock your doors at home and in your car and don’t leave belongings in a place visible through your car windows.

Second, if you don’t have a Neighborhood Watch where you live, help prevent crime by organizing one.  Neighborhood Watch is a national program and is the most effective means available for keeping crime out of neighborhoods. It relies on the best crime fighting tool ever invented, a good neighbor. Fortunately, good neighbors are found everywhere. They live in houses, apartment buildings, urban and suburban areas. The greatest thing about Neighborhood Watch is that it encourages neighbors to get to know each other and it makes them aware of their surroundings. When unusual activity is detected,  neighbors will report it to the police so it can be investigated.

LMPD will help you organize a Neighborhood Watch.  To request more information and / or start a Neighborhood Watch today, contact LMPD Community Relations Programs at (502) 574-7427 or email Renee Stigall.    More information is here:   http://louisvilleky.gov/government/police/services/neighborhood-watch .  If you live in St. Matthews, the St. Matthews Police Department has a variety of programs to help keep you safe.  More information is here:   http://www.stmatthewsky.gov/police/.

(If you have an issue you’d like to discuss, join us for our next Community Conversation on Wednesday, August 26, at 6:30 pm at Senior Care Experts, 145 Thierman Lane, in St. Matthews.  More information about that in next week’s eNews. )

Sustainability Story: Fresh Vegetables

Sustainability Story

Schools are back in session but the growing season is just hitting its peak.  That means lots of offerings at District 9 farmers markets.  Stephen Yates, manager of the award-winning St. Matthews Farmers Market, says vegetables were a little slow coming in this year but things are going strong now.  Fresh corn, tomatoes from the vine, watermelons, cantaloupes and much more are abundant.

The market is located at Beargrass Christian Church, 4100 Shelbyville Road – at the corner of Browns Lane and Shelbyville Road – across from the “old Sears building.”  It runs every Saturday from 8:00 am to Noon through October 10.  The market boasts up to 70 vendors and is run to be a gathering for people in the community to come by and buy local produce but also to visit and be with friends and neighbors. You can get more information at the market’s website:  http://smfarmersmarket.com/.

farmers market

Another great option for local produce is the two day a week market at the corner of Frankfort Avenue and South Peterson Avenue in the Crescent Hill United Methodist Church parking lot.  During this peak growing season, the Crescent Hill market is open from 7 am to about 11 am every Monday and Friday.

Shopping and eating locally is a great sustainability practice and what better way to do that than to buy local food, direct from local suppliers.   See you at the markets!

We’d like to feature your sustainability story - a resident or business doing good things for the environment.  Riding the bus, bicycling, walking, gardening and more - our eNews will feature practices which can benefit all of us.  Send your story to Bill Hollander or Kyle Ethridge

Shared Lane

Depending on weather and contractor scheduling, additional shared lane markings will begin appearing on some St. Matthews streets as part of the St. Matthews Phase 2 Neighborway project over the next couple of weeks. August is License Amnesty Month at LMAS

license pet

Jessica Montgomery, Director of Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS), has declared August as License Amnesty Month at LMAS. All late fees will be waived for this month. LMAS staff is now tracking licenses by zip code so they can determine which districts are in compliance with the city ordinances and where LMAS can provide resources to those in need. LMAS is over-capacity at the shelter, standing with over 400 animals to date. Animals without tags or other forms of owner identification may end up at LMAS. We need the citizens of Louisville to be responsible pet owners by vaccinating, microchiping, spay or neutering and licensing pets.

  1. August is Amnesty Month-all late fees will be waived.
  2. Proof of current rabies vaccination is required.
  3. Renewals can be done online or in person at Manslick or Newburg locations, by mail, or at select Jefferson county veterinary clinics.
  4. All dogs (altered or intact) MUST be licensed. Age or breed is irrelevant.
  5. All cats (altered or intact) MUST be licensedIndoor or outdoor!
  6. For those families with several animals, we offer a discount.
  7. Why? Besides being a city ordinance, this is the best way we have of reuniting owners with their pets. Animals that are found running loose with a tag or other forms of identification are given a free and safe ride home without going to the shelter.
