Today is a great day for Louisville! All over the city, Louisville employees are excited about the expected pay raise to $7.75 that take effect today.
Many have opposed this ordinance to raise the wage in fear that is will force businesses not to hire new employees and put them at a competitive disadvantage with Southern Indiana and other counties. Some also have said that a pay increase for workers would discourage employers from relocating to Louisville.
However, Judge Judith McDonald-Burkman ruled on this past Monday June 29th, to uphold the ordinance raising the city's minimum wage to $7.75 today, then to $8.25 per hour on July 1, 2016 and finally to $9 per hour on July 1, 2017, with annual adjustments for inflation thereafter.
Councilman David James along with other members of Metro Council were the original sponsors of the ordinances and are happy to be supporting the working men and women of our community. In the words of Councilman James "This pay raise will not only help our economy continue to flourish, but it helps our communities and the families that dwell within them".
Congratulations Louisville, progress begins TODAY!

The Solid Waste Management Division will offer compost
workshops July 25 at Limerick Garden and August 1 at Miles Park. Composting is
an easy way to turn yard waste and food scraps into make-it-yourself fertilizer
for use in gardens, lawns and other landscaping.
It also greatly reduces the need for haul-away disposal
of those organic materials. The three-hour sessions will further explain
the benefits of composting, provide instructions on how to do it and offer
hands on demonstrations. Participants will learn what supplies are needed, what
items should and should not go into compost and how to tend, harvest and use
it. Bring a pair of gardening gloves rain or shine to one of the workshops.
Saturday July 25
9 a.m. to Noon
Limerick Garden, 933 S 6th Street
Saturday August 1
9 a.m. to Noon
Miles Park, 15712 Shelbyville Road
Four Reasons to Compost
1. Good for the environment
Yard and food waste make up 30% of the total waste stream. Composting saves landfill space and greatly reduces methane emissions caused by the breakdown of these materials.
2. Benefits for your yard
Compost improves moisture retention and drainage of soil, provides a slow release of nutrients and amends both sandy and clay soils. Healthy plants and healthy soil reduce pests and diseases.
3. Saves money
Composting reduces the cost of soil conditioner, manure, pesticides and water soil that plants need. It cuts down on costs associated with trash hauling, for you and your municipality.
4. It’s easy
Composting is the most practical and convenient way to handle your yard waste, and is typically easier than bagging waste and transporting it to the curb or a waste facility. Start with leaves and grass and work your way toward food scraps.
