FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 10, 2024) — A long-time Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) employee has been named a 2024 Library Journal Mover and Shaker, a prestigious national award that recognizes innovative, proactive and impactful work in the field of library services.
Lauren Abner is the State E-rate Coordinator for the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. Abner was recognized as a Mover and Shaker for her work assisting Kentucky public libraries with receiving E-rate discounts, which have risen to record highs under her tenure.
E-Rate is a federal program that provides a vital source of funding for broadband services and network equipment, especially for small public libraries. The application process is complex and can be intimidating. To provide assistance and support, Abner hosts webinars and training events as well as one-on-one meetings, walking directors and library staff from across the commonwealth through the process of applying for E-Rate discounts and reimbursements.
“Lauren’s work has actively contributed to over $25 million in E-Rate funding for Kentucky’s libraries. Her commitment to providing personalized guidance for a complex process has allowed many more libraries to take advantage of these funds,” said KDLA Commissioner and State Librarian Denise Lyons. “Public library staff are very vocal in their praise and appreciation for Lauren’s commitment and we at KDLA are grateful to have her as part of our team.”
Abner has been with KDLA since 2007 and has served as State E-rate Coordinator since 2015. In 2021, her expertise led to her appointment as vice chair of the American Library Association’s E-Rate Task Force. She became the task force chair in 2023.
Over the past 22 years, Library Journal’s Movers & Shakers awards have offered a compelling snapshot of what is up and coming, as well as significant contributions in the library world. Abner’s award places her with only 10 others in Kentucky who have received this prestigious recognition since the Library Journal created the honor in 2002.
